Detailed video explaining all about the Kickstarter will be published tomorrow instead of a reaction video. It ended up being 20 minutes long so I refrained from putting it at the start of today's video. My written plan and all that is also able to be found on the Kickstarter page. KICKSTARTER IS LIVE!! Prologue + Five chapters available to read for FREE in the link below. Synopsis below :) For two years a peasant rebellion has spread throughout East Valya in lands ruled by Northern Delrothian nobility. The Emperor has set sail to deal with it personally but the nobility of the Empire's heartland do not trust him for he had previously sided with Elves over his own people in a dispute that had sparked at the beginning of his reign. How desperate are the nobility of Northern Delroth to keep their gains in distant lands? In the heartlands of the Empire the Emperor's grandson, Prince Damien Arivos, must deal with the insistent expectations that come with the name he had been given at birth. For young Damien was named after the single greatest Arivos Prince to ever live, The Starlight Prince. In the largest city in the world, Arlyn's Bay, hunger and anger grows day by day as the wealthy and powerful use the Elven Rebellion and East Valyan Rebellion as justification to ever increase the cost of bread and grain. Cam, a simple dockworker, is desperate to help the people all around him. On Ascension and Remembrance Day, both the Prince and Commoner will make decisions that push them down a path neither expected. In my D&D setting the deities grant powers because they have designs for the future and can to an extent see the future, however they cannot foresee how the meddling of other deities will influence the future they see. So they follow more subtle plots by finding champions to slowly shift the world in their respective favour. In my current fantasy story the deities are observers of the world who are curious about the nature of life and magic. The only real reasons for why they grant boons are, "Let's see what hapoens if I actually give them the power they ask for" and, "I have grown attached to this mortal and want them to not die horribly any time soon". And the latter doesn't usually end well at all for the mortal in question since they got a deity's attention to begin with.
I really like this trope. When done right it’s a simple way to set a foundation for a morally complex narrative but so effective. So many of my favorite franchises use it, Dragon Age for many characters and groups that determine the course of history, the Black Butler manga makes it the very foundation for lead characters Ciel and Sebastian leading to a complex professional but strangely familial toxic partnership, the Puella Magi franchise uses it to explore psychological horror and was integral for subverting the entire Magical Girl genre, it’s a key gameplay mechanic for the entire Megami Tensei franchise which usually ends with the world being completely and utterly changed, I even use it as a source of power for many characters in my own original series.
i was raised surrounded by german/austrian fairy tales because of my family and in those tales pretty much the only faustian bargains you find are the ones Red talks about at the end- kinda dumb, but i honestly forgot that the first kind (the heavily moralized, heavily punished ones) existed for a solid second when i first saw the video. amazing how deeply ingrained in me those fairly tales from my childhood are, considering they're still what first comes to mind instead of the media i consume nowadays
I think the average person's idea of how powerful/intelligent/capable/etc a supernatural being is supposed to be has grown over time. In older stories it's not to unusual to find full on gods getting smacked around by mortals and losing, but a modern person would probably say something like 'Well I guess they weren't gods then." or something like that.
The way 8 tend to view champions is that they are meant to embody the sphere of the deity they represent, not necessarily the deity themselves, though that can obviously vary based on who they serve. But for some gods, it might not matter if people worship them specifically, only that the things they represent are valued and reinforced.
Hmm outsmarting the devil in my opinion pretty much sounds like using a loophole in a deal/bargain aka this also applies to the laws in a lot of countries.
It is. Usually those stories also don't deal with capital D Devil, but hells equivalent of low rank salesmen that seek to pad their own numbers. When capital D Devil shows up, it is either to show it is hopeless or provides "the out" the hero needs to fulfill his part of the bargain without eternal damnation often in form of singular service.
DND devils associated with Asmodeus have to fufill their end of the bargain. Every contract is linked to Asmodeus, and if a devil breaks the terms of a contract, they face the consequences rather quickly.
Honestly: I love Wrlocks in DnD were YES it's a Faustian Bargain but No you don't have to be Doomed in the Heart of your Character to do it, sure it might be an Act of Desperation or Maybe a Planned act or maybe just a Happy Lil accident but If I can Get my 1d10 Cantrip Plus some Spellslots for SMITE in Exchange for Living the Romatic Ideal of the Pirates Life then Hell Yeah Creepy Talking Coralencrusted Sword I found Randomly I'll Fucking Do it! What I am saying is: Any Character No Matter there Journey or If there Heroic AF you can do a Faustian Bargain and if you are a TRUE Hero you will Uphold your End of the Deal because it is the Right Thing to Do
The English language isn't to blame for our opinions on argument. At least not in whole, English has borrowed a lot of words and has a lot of synonyms all with slightly different meanings. Basically, the more ways you have of expressing a concept, the narrower each word or phrase's meaning is going to be on average. As for the negative connotations of argument, that's more of a cultural thing, which isn't completely disconnected from language, because language is connected to everything, but in this case it has to do with our individual and cultural experience with the word. Argument is not valued in the broader Anglo culture as a positive. Most people's experience with argument is of frustration, trying to convince someone else of their opinions, and making no headway. Debate is a more neutral word, but it also means something more structured than a typical argument, and so most people interact with debates far less often than more informal arguments, and so don't build up those kind of experience based associations.
Ok, since I'm editing the Critical Role wiki and literally made an article on this, I'll pause the video to comment this (an amazing beginning, btw, I'm thrilled): *warning, Critical Role spoilers* In Exandria the gods can't directly enter the planet due to the Divine Gate (cosmic barrier, essentially), so their champions are usually devoted to represent them or causes connected to them. This, however, doesn't mean that the mortal in question has to spread the good word of said deity, and they don't even have to be their worshippers (there are a few examples of mortals forced to become mindless Champions after being defeated by the god's forces). A god doesn't need a champion, but they can benefit greatly if they have someone to directly intervene for them in the Material Plane. In Vax's case, his first deal was to serve the Matron of Ravens in exchange for Vex's life. However, as you said, his second deal permanently put him at her service, offering to finish a mission as her champion defeating a great evil... After which he leaves and becomes a celestial agent for her, serving her in many different planes as the Champion of Ravens. I must say, however, that the Matron of Ravens isn't evil about the deals. She's death and fate, as neutral as she can be, and she acts as a consequence of Vax seeking her help in life and death situations, which she takes extremely seriously. I hope this helps, sorry for the long comment 😂
I said this in the comments of the original video, but Yu-Gi-Oh has kind of a Faust-alike in the figure of Thief King Bakura, who was originally a normal peasant boy until he witnessed the COMPLETE GENOCIDE of his village at the age of six, and the bodies of the dead being melted down into the Millennium Items, for no reason other than the village consisted of thieves who were more "disposable". He goes on to make a deal with Yu-Gi-Oh's Satan analogue, the dark god Zorc, who uses his desire for revenge to destroy the world and then sacrifices and kills TKB without a second thought (although the manga makes it slightly less horrifying for him since he -seemingly, whether he even has free will at this point is a hot topic of debate amongst the fans - willingly gives up his life to make the sacrifice). Adding to the tragedy, Zorc was the same being who ordered the Kul Elna genocide in the first place, meaning TKB ended up only furthering the goals of the being who slaughtered his family in trying to avenge them. The late and great Kazuki Takahashi stated in an interview once that had the Kul Elna genocide not happened, TKB would have turned out more like his modern day reincarnation/soul host Ryou Bakura, that is to say, a perfectly decent guy.
Oh oohh oohh I can give my personal example from my own writing as to someone who struck a desperate bargain with the devil and ended up monstrous. So basically, in my story, which is a fanfiction set in a game universe with a lot of my ocs, this girl who had already a bad raising, already had several personal problems, and also got a bad rep for her dark powers and shady backstory was blamed for some deaths and feared for her powers, and so she was basically beaten to death, or the brink of it, by the villagers who lived near her, and begged for help and angrily wished to get back at the world that mistreated her so much for no reason, and, in that desperate moment, a being of pure chaos from beyond the universe heard that plea and granted her immortality and a great boost in her powers, by basically turning her into a life-draining shadow creature who can't die but can suffer immensely if she doesn't feed on others' lives, and with great powers of terror. After she took her revenge on the villagers and instantly regretting it, she set off to skulk around for life and magic sources to drain as to try to solve her eternal hunger, and the more she wrecks and destroys and kills to survive, the worst she feels, and yet, she still can't die. When we meet her again in my story, she is basically going mad with guilt and hatred for the world while also having convinced herself she was somehow chosen by some savior deity and that's why she's got her powers and immortality, and so she swings back and forward in between self-hatred and self-aggrandization, while she continues to perform atrocities. My idea is to have her get yelled into stopping by a similarly self-loathing, misanthropic character who's a hero and sees his dark reflection on her.
Ok so... The reason for divine emissaries in my world is quite complicated but whatever, I have time. Gods are separated into two categories. From mortal perspective they are basically the same with the second category being just more widely spread. But the truth is that lesser gods, are the standard "born of belief and empowered by it" gods. They use champions and proxies to maintain their image as great and powerful and mysterious etc to make belief in them stronger. But they are still fundamentally a part of the world. A component of it that has to obey the rules. Then there are true gods. There are five of those even though they are only four known. The known ones loosely respond to the four elements and their associated traits, like god of fire is also a god of war, competition, change, light etc. and the fith one represents nothing. Not in a sense that they don't embody anything, but in the sense that they are the god of the end. Their domains are death darkness peace stagnation cold eternity etc. basically everything that is in its essence a lack of something. The last one got betrayed by the rest, and is imprisoned by them as the true gods are just a fact of existence and can never be killed or destroyed. The whole world, material plane, hells, realms of death etc are just different chains that bind the fith god. As such true gods can't really act on their own inside. They are like programmes watching an unbelievably complex program run. They can change perimeters, add or subtract some things, bestow provaleges onto certain programs but they can't really interfere too much without screwing something beyond repair and having to battle a very pissed off fith god again. It's like asking if a programmer can do something in a game. Yeah they can. Whatever it is they can do it. But they can't really walk into the game, in the same way you can't walk into your CPU. As such they use agents to control the state of the chain and keep it in a good state, and if they can't rely on the inhabitants of the realm for some reason, because the last breakout attempt was too severe for example and now there are undead and demons everywhere, they send in the angels, that are kind of like agent smith in the matrix.
In my idea of how gods work, I think gods would need champions on earth to fulfill a purpose that the god oversees, so if you take a look at Moon Knight and his role as an avatar of Khonshu, Khonshu’s deific domain is over the moon, Justice, and those who travel at night, so those traits map pretty easily to a night-based superhero carrying out vigilante justice and protecting vulnerable people in the night. In Vox Machina, with Vax and his mysterious deal with the Raven Queen, you could say that Vax already serves his purpose without really thinking about it; the Raven Queen is a goddess of death, and Vax is a rogue with a penchant for knives, he kills people quite frequently. But the Raven Queen is also a goddess of fate, and with Vax being a hero in a soon to be legendary band of misfit heroes, his actions will determine people’s fates no matter what he does. Vax doesn’t need to be preaching the worship of the Raven Queen, I’m pretty sure she wouldn’t care whether or not she was being actively worshipped given the decrepit state of her temple and how much power she still wielded despite that. If you were a champion/avatar of Aphrodite, you’d probably be a matchmaker. If you were a champion of Hephaestus, you’d probably be like Tony Stark, innovating and furthering the world’s technology.
I made a Moon Knight OC who’s an avatar of the goddess Hecate, meaning she gets some witchy magic, she’s typically a night based hero, and she guards entrances to other realms and the greater multiverse with a pair of magic flaming daggers which can act as keys to magical doorways. I called her Night Hound since Hecate has a lot of significant stuff about dogs in her symbols.
That's not a hot take, that's a word salad of a take. Ignoring the problem of which socialism you're talking about with how in general people mush various versions like there's only one type of socialism, while you can take some systems from either one at the end of the day they're ideologically opposite ends of an axis and trying to make them work together will sabotage purposes. For example the capitalist focus on pursuit of profit above all else is going to eventually clash with helping the overall community, you will have certain rich people that don't want to spend the money they feel they solely earned on schools in less privileged areas, which can quickly lead to a major difference in education.
@@RenaDeles first of all I was trying to suggest that in order to at least attempt to end short term thinking without the whole just have all of human kind die I just felt like that if elements of capitalism and element’s of socialism then maybe our home country of the USA could actually not only stop killing the environment for money but also make sure that the wealth gap does not get any bigger than it is as well as make things more fair for the middle class that remains in this country as well as help the poor and homeless not be permanently poor and homeless okay and lastly this is my dads as well as my opinion on this particular issue okay.😑
Every country already has elements of both socialism and capitalism. No country has a "pure" version of either. That's a good thing, too. Capitalism is not the solution to everything, and neither is socialism. What the world argues about is what the correct balance should be. I agree with you that the US is definitely too capitalistic. Things like healthcare and the environment shouldn't be left in the control of corporations.
@@FieryMeltman when I said I wanted elements of both capitalism and socialism I mean have just a bit more elements from socialism so that big greedy corporations and owners of said big corporations can no longer get away with treating their employees like peasants as well as get them to pay just a bit more taxes so that the remaining middle class in my home country the USA as well as the poor and homeless will actually be able to get to middle class status which in turn could if not end the unfair wealth gap at least decrease it enough so that an actual communist revolution will be prevented from happening in my home country because I feel that if the big corporations as well as their ceo,s don’t start paying their employees a bit more then they do now as well as treat them how they want to be treated then I fear a communist revolution will happen in this country in the same way as the Russian revolution was in 1917 to around 1920AD okay.

@@Touhou20246 My previous comment explicitly agrees wih that. Also, you might want to split your comments into paragraphs to make them easier to read.
