I finally took the leap and applied to an online education program. I love kids and teaching and know teaching would be perfect. Thanks for always being a good inspiration!

I teach 6th grade ELA - now social studies. We teach our students how to use blank paper to take notes on each paragraph. We saw great results when we explicitly did one together instead of in the past where we’d just give them paper. Also, I’m loving your vlogs 🥰 I’ve been binging as I get prepped to go back to school.

I would love to hear what others do transitioning from paper based notes/text analysis to online as well!! We’ve been practicing taking notes on a blank piece of paper (they get one for state testing). I’m also thinking of practicing highlighting on the online practice test.

Katie, I love your content! I enjoy your getting ready portions in the a.m., ootd's, seeing what you are having for breakfast/lunch, and just overall how to stay organized. Devotional content is always great too :)

I am currently homeschooling my third grade and I have taken a few of your ideas for novel studies and she really enjoys them. Going to check out the Fredrick Douglas one for when we talk about slavery. 😊Thanks for all the good ideas.

I really enjoyed this vlog. I appreciate the moments of raw footage. Keep up the great work from an Oregonian 3rd grade teacher.

I have my students fold their scrap paper into 8-16 squares and then number each square. I have them prove their answers by telling key words or the number of the paragraph they found the answer in. I also have them write how they found the answer if it’s inference, example, synonyms, or antonyms. There are many things they can write but not the exact answers because that is a testing irregularity.

We were just asked to have the kids start using scratch paper for reading. They were asked to write a sentence that summarizes each a paragraph so they could by the end of a text, have a summary of the whole thing. This helps espcially when they have two texts that they read. I modeled and did it with my class and they pointed out why some were wrong answer choices due to them not matching what we had on our summaries or the text and they loved going back to their notes as well. It can be a LOT especially for those who are still struggling to read on their own and grasps relevant details but it’s a work in progress. For rhyme scheme I have asked the kids to just write down the last word on each line of a poem so they can then analyze it to see what the rhyme scheme is if there is one to help determine the poem type.

Is method "cold read" like "cold call" is for the skill of speaking? Are there resources/books/articles to read up on?
