I completely understand how that meeting can be triggering. I’ve had a similar conversation with teacher friends and we also end up being triggered by these data talks that have no solutions. Love your new book T-shirt 😊
I am a relatively new viewer. I've seen about half a dozen of your blogs and I must say you are an amazing, caring teacher. I offer leadership development training and I provide professional development for school district leaders and superintendents. I somehow stumbled onto your TH-cam page and you are such an authentic leader. I pray that you remain focused on your why and stand strong. Your work is not in vain. Thank you for allowing yourself to be vulnerable. You are helping so many learn to overcome their challenges. You are needed and you and your pooch are adorable. Thank you again for sharing. P.S. I did want to see the new PJs.😄
I agree with you. The system is broken. I’m a 3-5th grade interrelated teacher in GA. Don’t get me started. I can go on in for hours about what is wrong in education. This is 33 years of teaching and things are getting worst. I wouldn’t tell my worst enemy to go into the education field. lol. I enjoy your vlogs. Thanks for keeping it real!
Your explanation of the issues with learning deficit, standardized testing, parental involvement, admin response, etc was SPOT ON! And this is not coming from a teacher or anyone in education, I am just a parent involved in my child’s school and I see allllll the things you mentioned. I really think that the “community schools” movement was well intentioned but unrealistic. Our society now expects schools, and more specifically teachers, to solve all the problems. Schools are now the hub for all the social services - they’re trying to identify learning disabilities, address mental health/trauma/behavioral issues, serve ESL populations, pack backpacks of food for children to bring home over the weekend, AND oh also teach kids. Not that those are not all important services that kids need to be able to function in school and learn but “just” teaching was already a WHOLE job in and of itself. Then we decided to throw the weight of all the basic needs of society onto the backs of school staff and we’re wondering why they’re breaking down under that burden?!
Thank you for saying that as a non-educator. Providing quality, high-level teaching is hard all on its own. So much has not become the responsibility of the teacher when it really shouldn't be.
I am sorry for your loss, Ms. Robinson. And also, thank you so much for voicing your frustrations. I am an LAUSD teacher and I completely feel how you're feeling. I think I am at a point where I've kind of given up hope that anything will change. But it makes me feel better to know I am not alone. Thank you!
Finding joy in the little things are always the motivations that keep me going too. Choosing joy when things aren't perfect is what helps me make it day by day.
Omg I love the reading rainbow shirt, so cute. I was hoping during 2020 that systematic racism would be addressed in a real way, but I don't think it will happen in our lifetimes at this point. I feel a bit negative for saying that, but idk. Sending condolences to you and your family.
It is the little things!! I'm so happy to hear that you're getting back to what made you happy!❤ Call it a come-back! Lol Prayers for your family especially your dad.
I love how level headed on the complex issue of education. It’s unfortunate that in 2024 our society hasn’t come together to find real solutions for our education system. When our nation is divided on everything we accomplish nothing.
The challenge of BIPOC across the board in white- centered spaces. Most institutions are not committed to fully embracing equity work. Be the voice for change and don't let detractors frame your voice as negative, unfriendly, or angry. Thank you for the work you do.
Districts are just about checking the box that makes them look good. It’s how my district functions & it’s frustrating to just do “busy work” in staff meetings or (YES) expect the teachers to solve the problems caused by systemic & social issues. I hear you & feel the same frustrations.
Why do some parents think that teachers read their work emails after hours or on weekends? I remember a parent trying to contact me right after school, and the office staff continued to contact me on the intercom. I was in the bathroom, and the last time that I checked, staff bathrooms do not have telephones. Thank you for your video presentation. Take care.
I don’t work in education but I have been feeling your pain on burnout, and poor support from upper management. I really have been taking in perspective that in the end, it’s a job and your position would be up before your funeral eulogy. Don’t let them steal your smile.
Unfortunately, there are systems set in place that profit from people being sick, poor, imprisoned, and uneducated. I understand the 'anger' because as an educator it can either motivate you or exhaust you. 😅 Tfs
Sorry for your loss - but it does sound like a relatively good situation for such a sad event, which I'm glad for. And I really relate to what you said about the triggering I'm a pasty white person in UK higher ed, so a different set of contexts, but there are similar issues and concerns around students with mental health and neurodiversity challenges - lots of "oh, they are a concern" and yet in practice limited willingness to change or modify the things that might actually help that group, or really listen to them, and some very dismissive language which is probably not meanly intentioned, but as someone with a long-standing anxiety disorder and strong awareness of neurdodiversity (and on a diagnosis journey myself after younger relatives who are "just like their Aunty' got diagnoses), sometimes it just really gets personal, because I _know_ these things were and are said about me and to me, and I also know how much potential these students have from working one to one with some of them and really seeing them flourish when they get the support they need or the space to understand that they were square, triangular and star shaped pegs in a school system bound and determined to hammer every child into a round hole or blame the child for not being able to squish themselves into the hole... (oops, I might be a bit fed up about that lot right now...). Look after yourself and the lovely woofy! And enjoy the new pyjamas...
As always, thanks for sharing your experiences. I am wondering, just from a professional and civil rights perspective, how is admin even allowed to discuss race and academic performance? In my years as a teacher, data has only ever been about scores in terms of growth/lack of growth, or teacher/ grade level performance. NEVER race. I have only taught elementary, so there may be some difference there. But it seems WILDLY unprofessional to discuss the academic performance of racial groups, only to point out a demographic that (for various reasons, nationwide) has ALWAYS been "behind " collectively; nothing new or groundbreaking! As a union representative, I'd love to know if you find any issues with the professional legitimacy of the whole discussion? Again, thank you for sharing. Also, sending my condolences for your family's loss 🙏🏽💝
I think because they are looking at groups with the intention of closing academic performance gaps that it is allowed. I know many districts look at the data this way and the data cab be teased out to do that. We also have a Black parent group that wants the data investigated in that manner.
Are there any books or materials that are great resources on learning about positive and effective cultural practices? I really appreciate the valid point you made. It is so true.
There are a lot of books out there, many of which I have not read. I just Googled "culturally responsive pedagogy" and saw quite a few books that may be of interest.
It’s the little things that keep us going. For me it’s 5 weeks until the next break and dinner with co workers tomorrow that keep me going. Girl…I’m triggered too, the district assigned us a literacy training on the last day of post planning( last day before the summer break). Like really…you all couldn’t do this any other time. 🙄
You are expressing all my frustration these days with education. It's the same in Canada. And I am so tired of the board/District performative ...and then expecting us to continue the systems that do not serve these students. It's so fake and surface level. And I feel like it's all put on teacher and playing with our emotions.... with no resources but demands that are unsustainable.
I truly can relate this is year 25 of teaching and it is my last year in a classroom….the problem is the system…trying to fit all children in the same box doesn’t work…that was the political point to break the system 😢
I would be careful not to take on the weight of disproving stereotypes or trying to prove that they don't apply to you. People have issues that will cause them to view other races of people in stereotypical ways. Peace, and as always, thanks for sharing.
I'm also sick of being the only black teacher in the room, and having to sit and talk about how low the black kids are. That's literally the only time we ever talk about black kids! When they're struggling.
I don't want to become the spokesperson for all things Black and relating to Black students, but I also don't want to become complacent and just let things continue to be the way they always have been. It is a touch predicament to be in.
“If it has more than one cord, I’m already annoyed.” 😅 Same!
I love how you’re committed to find things that bring you joy in this difficult season! I enjoy watching your vlogs. Be encouraged ❤
