Just to clarify… This gear list is not my favorite gear necessarily. Although some of it is probably my favorite I suppose! It’s just what I felt like bringing on the specific trip! Just wanted you to see what I would choose to bring on a specific trip if I’m not testing anything and there is no TH-cam agenda.

Another trick for airline travel with backpacking gear. I take out everything I need for the flight and put it in my fanny pack. Then I put my pack and trekking poles etc into an XL IKEA Frakta zipper bag. Only $10 on Amazon, super durable, only weighs 6.7 oz. When I get to my destination, I simply empty the Frakta bag, fold it up to about half the size of a piece of copy paper, and put it in the very bottom of my pack. Do my hike and then reverse the process to come home. Happy trails.

an added feature of the Sea-2-Summit trowel that I never hear about might have saved your bacon on this last trip (where you forgot to restock) - if you buy those compressed toilet paper rolls (they look like little breath mints) the handle of the trowel is hollow and can carry them as a back-up.
It's all good! Even the gallon zip lock bags... they are valuable in all sizes. I like the buff pillow idea, needed another pillow for under my knees plus the little inflatable one that is very comfortable. Thanks for the food suggestion, too
Therma rest compressible pillows are nice. I found a better pillow that combines two “pillows.”
1-Paraia Outdoors pillow
2- Any small inflatable pillow (i use the Outdoor Vitals pillow).
Put the OV pillow (deflated) into the bottom sleeve of the Paraia Outdoor pillow and then flat the the OV pillow. Paria outdoor pillow provides soft comfort while the OV pillow provides support. Beat prt is you can adjust the support of the combined pillow by how much you inflate the OV pillow.
Give it a try. It weighs about the same as one of the therma rest pillows but is more comfy, doesnt lose firmness, is customizable in terms of support, and it compacts very well.

Outdoor Vitals pillow is amazing! Just used for first short PCT section and it was great. Didn't slide all around, comfy shape and just A+.

Awesome, I can't wait for labor day. Not because I'm going on an awesome trip. But because that Tuesday I'm going to see my knee surgeon. Hopefully the first step to getting back out on amazing hiking trips. Until then your videos keep me entertained in what I'm missing.
I love my XMid 1P, it's hard to explain just how great they are until you're set up. My dog slept with me in it last week. And ordered a Rapide SL (wide long) the day before I saw this, they checked all the boxes for what +3oz over the compromises? Amazing.
I think it’s great that you showed off gear that may not be your favorite. I think we tend to get obsessed with getting “the best” stuff and forget that the gear isn’t that point and we can still have a great time with something else.

that's the modern sickness of minds .. but thankfully it doesn't happen to everyone .. and I think I am the happy one .. I am happily "roleplaying" my adventures in the wild - that's the key .. so actually I am using a lot of "outdated" stuff because these pieces of gear have some soul .. and also I am modifying my gear a lot .. I've improved my tent, I've improved my backpack, I crafted my knife, I carved my kuksa and so on .. I meet in the wild a lot of people with gear worth of thousands of $$ .. the best gear literally .. but unfortunately the gear doesn't earn the respect, the people don't respect themselves, nature, theirs gear, awesome experience that they are in .. and this is because they seek inside .. not outside ..
I'm backpacking with my Helinox lite cot... it's bulky but light... getting off the ground is the best thing I've ever done... if it's cold you still need a pad or small fleece blanket to keep the warmth in...
Dan, this year was our 2nd attempt at the Cirque of the Towers! We aborted in 2021, due to an incoming snow storm. This year, after 7.5 miles on the trail, we got word via our Zoleo of a family emergency. There was no weather forecasted for the week, but we had to walk back to the car in the worst rain/hailstorm. The trail was a river of ice. I had an REI rain jacket, and Marmot rain pants, and there was not a dry part of my body. We had to drive back to Pinedale wet. Rain gear is not 100% efficacious. If we had not had to turn around, and been able to get over the pass, we could have set up the tent to keep dry. P.S. It was clear the rest of the week.
I have similar experiences with rain gear soaking through. There should be layers of protection against rain.
1st line: Umbrellas can take a lot of load off your rain clothes (and aren't touching you when they soak through) and are my preferred anti hail equipment (I've used one to deflect grape sized hail). They also provide breathable sun protection.
2nd line: rain jackets and pants.
Last line: For cold weather, Scandinavian style fishnet base layers can minimize skin contact with your soaked clothes and make things feel a whole lot less bad.
Going on my first backpacking trip today! you and the other youtubers on here have been a tremendous help. I have experience outdoors but only in a military setting so adjusting to bringing comfort stuff as well as things that would be provided for us while in the field has been interesting.

freaking genius. unless your buff is sweated out. but if it's dry, definitely would be a good pillow case.
Rain pants & jacket work also as windbreakers in cool and windy situations. They function as another insulating light layer👍over all your cold weather clothes.
My biggest struggle while sleeping outside is the sun. Goes down 01 and up 03 in the summertime
Switch to a bidet and then you will won't have to worry about replacing your TP, running out of it, etc. Once you get the hang of it you will feel so much fresher afterwards vs using TP.

I was skeptical coming from a Tensor and Thermorest but the Rapide is the best and most comfortable pad Ive ever slept on.

One of my biggest issues is food, I’m gluten-free and no onion/garlic…if only backpacking food companies would put the seasoning separately. I have to dehydrate my own meals…is cheaper, just not convenient. Nice honest vid w/good tips, appreciate it.

That bamboo spoon is my favorite, but I sanded it down and put several coats of walnut oil on it. Now it is super smooth and non-stick for food.

As far as desperate defecation situations go, I believe it is still acceptable form to poop first, dig the cat hole second and then usher your gift into the hole with an appropriate stick/rock. Tidy. Also, initial wiping with natural TP (fir fronds, leaves, smooth rocks) removes most significant clingers, followed by the hallowed paper, which you will probably use less of. I find this method works well to reduce the size of my poo paper Ziploc. Also, a water bottle taken to one’s poo spot is nice to have for moistening and softening the previously mentioned natural paper before wiping. Some thoughts.
Could you review brands like North face and Patagonia. I was looking at the patagonia 9 trails pack and wasn’t sure if it was really as good as many say.

We got caught in a hail (and lightening) storm while on the lizard head. A bit unnerving being the highest thing up there in that storm. We did probably 50% off trail while in that trip. Cool area. Good fishing.
The airtag idea is really good! Kind of instant karma when the flight company says they cannot find your luggage, but you can (it's supposed to be the lther way round, doesn't it?)!
Well, I guess I want to do something similar, but with android I'm out if luck I guess? Plus yes, airtags are great, but I'm an Android guy.

I love the Duce trowel, tip I did wrap a little electric tape around handle to make it not sharp in hand and for having a little electric tape for repairs in the field. My Med kit is also much lighter a zip lock bag.
Same here, no way I could lug around a giant shovel like Dan had any more. Unless you're burying a body the Duece is plenty enough IMO.

I have flown with bearspray for approximately 15 years! I flew to Alaska last fall with 2 cans! They do not check and it doesn't depressurize or explode. Obviously no fuel. I also dumped whitegas out in front of Salt Lake City airport in 2005 from my msr canister. It's ok, it evaporates.

You should check out the redcamp pillow and kingcamp cotton camping mat. The mat is bulky though compresses well but a game changer for camping if condensation isn't an issue.
Nah the rapide SL is easily the best sleeping pad rn unless you need to go into extremely cold environments

I would like to hear about the all up weight with food and water you carried on this and other trips when you share info on them. When you show a gear list for a trip the weights of the items or a simple total weight before start would be helpful. I have an old injury and want to take my son on an overnight or several night trip. The food and basic water weight is the thing that is missing. Maybe a list of the food you took and used/didn't use so we can see how much water you needed for freeze dried vs ready to eat items. What you take on a 2/3/5/7 day trip for food would be super helpful. Calorie needs (yours not mine, I can make the guess at how I would change for our needs) per day for a given trip type etc. Forgive me if this is covered. New subscriber.

I gave up on camp pillows. I decided that it’s worth it for me to bring a cheap full size pillow along with the outdoor vitals pillow and I sleep like a new dad in the maternity chair. Without it I still slept good, but would wake up throughout the night much more often.

I got the Rapide the month it came out and was a little unsure since there were no reviews. The first night on it, I knew it was special. I can't seem to find an adapter that fits right with my Giga Pump 2.0. There is one but it is such a tight fit I feel like I am going to break the valve.

Dan, I am curious about your food storage/protection at night in the Winds. I noticed you didn’t have/talk about a bear container. I have been blessed to backpack in the Winds since 1972 (just got back from a 50th anniversary loop over Hailey/Washakie pass loop) and I have always hung my food. The PCT method of hanging was a wonderful revelation when I learned about it. I bought an Ursack a couple of years ago and can’t bring myself to wrap my food around a tree six feet off of the ground.
Wow! That’s amazing you’ve been there that long. So blessed! Yes I just hung my food. I forgot to mention that there was a line of cordage that I keep inside of the food bag to hang at night. I try do you hang it according to recommendations of 10 feet off the ground and at least 4 feet away from the tree trunk. But that’s not always possible so I just do the best I can :-)

Hey Dan, how do you like the Xmid 1P? I’m a little taller than you and have the solid and mesh in 2P but have wondered if a 1P is worth the savings in dimensions as far as spots to pitch it it. We are similar in size, what do you think?? Also have you tried the OV version with only 1 vestibule? (Smaller footprint ). What do you think if you have tried it?

I find trowels are a very weird return-on-investment item. I'm currently using the Vargo Dig Dig, and it is *not* an 'emergency' trowel, for sure. I think I will start digging 'pre-emptive' catholes anywhere I pitch, just in case.
Looking for a smallpocket stove that can hold a larger pan. Maybe even a frying pan with the handle cut off.

If you haven't, you should try Peak Refuel freeze dried meals. I've never had camp food this good in my life.
