    Brings back memories of riding my 1983 Schwinn Cimarron, with XT throughout, and BioPace! Upon acquistion, the dealer installed quality chro-mo bars and stem. I outfitted it with racks and panniers for an epic expedition through Papua New Guinea in 1989. My buddy and I took a wonderful ride from the Highlands (10,000 ft. elev.) to Port Moresby, the nation's coastal capital. While looking for a laundrymat, a short fat native wearing a sarong and sandals flagged my buddy and I down, and invited us to dinner and to camp in his backyard. After a delicious seafood dinner he excused himself to give his national radio broadcast. At the time, he was a cabinet minister and later became Secretary General of his country. Sir Paulius Matane, knighted by Queen Elizabeth, and now about 88 years old. As his country took cautious -- and sometimes incautious -- steps toward modernism following independence in the early 1960s, he fought to keep out the modern scourges of tobacco, alcohol and television. It was unbelievable to see the rural population react to the bicycle. I promised a small 10-year-old boy that, if he washed off two-weeks worth of mud and sludge, he could take the bike for a ride. What a joy it was to see his gleaming ear-to-ear grin as he taught himself to ride in just minutes. I will never forget it.

    Seeing you build all these retro bikes made me want to build my own, so I built up an old 4130 cromo Panasonic mtb. Every single part, even the paint, I did myself. It’s rigid, it’s a single speed, and it’s got cantilevers. But all the riders with $5000 fs carbon bikes always stop me to ask what I’m riding! These bikes just have so much soul and character and personality, and to me that’s cooler than any store-bought super bike. Can’t wait to see what you build next 👍🏻

    The seat post clamp surprises me! The way the slot extends down between the the stays. I guess once it's clamped it won't move much but the way bicycle manufacturers bang on about rigidity these days, it's hard to believe how much the tech has moved on. Yet in it's day I imagine this old ritchey was a cutting edge piece of kit. A great restoration! Very sympathetic! I love that you've preserved all of the patina.

  • @YankeeWoodcraft

    That Ritchey frame is gold! Old school original from one of the innovators of MTBing. Even though I'll be getting myself a spanking new hardtail, I have a nice old steel Trek that I'm going to refurb anyway because steel is real. I love to see old 80's-90's MTBs with modern cockpits & rubber.

    That's a really nice find. They're continually harder to locate. I'm just building up a 1985 Ascent in the light blue color. I had one new and toured New Zealand and Australia on it, then traded it for something else. I found an original frame and fork from the local Ritchey guy in Vancouver BC. Thanks Rob!
    I'm building it as original as possible. Shimano Deerhead group, Nitto bullmoose bar, Tange bb, Thomaselli levers.
    Really enjoy your builds. It's great therapy. Take care.

    I never had a Ritchey. But I had a Bridgestone MB-1 ca. 1992. Rigid chromoly frame and some Ritchey components actually. Beautiful bike. It was stolen in 1995 and I can’t get over it several mountain bikes later.. Wish I had half your skills and talents to restore something like that.

    I'm a volunteer mechanic/board member at Providence Recycle A Bike, which is a co-op/community bike shop as you described. Glad you had such a positive experience at yours. They are a great resource.
    My only concern with this build is the lack of a narrow-wide chainring to keep the chain from dropping as a 1x.

    We have a non profit in Edmonton called Bike Edmonton where you can go in and work on your bike for a nominal fee and there are volunteers with bike knowledge to help you out. I have been a member for a while and have bought bikes as well as parts from there. I have also really enjoyed learning about bike maintenance and repair from the volunteers. Glad to see you have something similar in your city.
    I hope you do more with that Ritchie. It is such a unique bike I would love to see you maybe bring it back to its former glory and incorporate a few more modern elements into the build.

    i thoroughly enjoy your videos, seeing what you do makes me appreciate the old 95" Shogun TrailBreaker i picked up for free from a trash-pile! it had everything on it except wheels and a seat! all shimano Lx 3x7 gears and exage cantilever brakes, i sourced a newer set of black rims and put on some shwalbe blackjack tyres on them and it rides so smooth and fast i pass alot of new bike riders and make them jealous of my $50 bike!
    keep doing what you do mate, as we all need to appreciate the old and give it new life!

      They were a terrible idea... was sold as a stiffer place for a brake as the frame did not flex much there... in reality it was hard to adjust and i have gotten many bloody knuckles from the near by chain ring.. Luckily, the trend did not last long... The Ritchey was a sweet ridding bike that was made from high quality Cr Mo double butted tubing...

    • @Hazeder422
      @Hazeder422 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sprocketandwheel I've only seen it on this frame but another interesting mounting position I've seen is on the chain stays but on the top side of them rather than underneath the chain stays, this however was on a bmx so I'm not sure whether it'd work with gears on a mtb

    Another great vintage build by mr old shovel, and when I get the parts for my old DAWES CHILLIWACK rigid mountain bike of which I am turning into a three by eight cruiser with Renthal BMX handlebars with a height of five and three quarters and with a tyre width of 26 by 2 inches, plus a decent set of fenders to keep the rain off.
    The three by system will be of 22/32 / 42 or 44 tooth chainrings on the front with a rear cassette being more road oriented to give a more comfortable ride and the help climbing up hills better and of course I will be changing out the bottom bracket bearings as well as the head tube as well to give better steering. This will be a fun ride when I have it completed.

    Awesome video! Love this build the most as it reminds me of my bike (or should I say "one of") which is a 1993 GT Borrego which I found in an extremely sorry state. I've managed to give it new life through replacing all cables, seatpost, seat, chain, peddles, grips and tires. It is now a really fun bike! The only drawback is it is not easily upgraded due to the bike having full Suntour XC Expert componentry, which makes it almost impossible to do a wide range cassette swap as you have done. Looks like I'll just have to keep a look out for a new frame to upgrade, hoping to keep it GT, I love the triple triangle design. Would love to see one here one day! Thanks for the awesome videos, they really make my day!

    Super cool bike. I just wonder how the 1x works with a old derailleur and triple type front chainring. Im guessing alright on road but off road could be sketchy. My chains come off more than I would like with a narrow wide ring and clutch derailleur on my 1x10s Im adding a chain guide because it happens too often. Still an awesome bike. Ritchey stuff was always nice.

    How did the old chainring (and possibly cassette) react with the new chain? I imagine such a combination would skip under load.

    I realy like Your bike restoration.
    I would like to have a real Ritchey frame but I live in a place where getting such a frame is almost impossible.
    You inspire me very much to work on my bikes. Best wishes! :-)

    My 1997 trek mountain track 26ers paint is not touched at all it still has the red to orange paint plus the crank and front derailleur which is the bb attached.

    So glad I found your channel. Always liked your finished product. This one actually rings closer to home since I'm currently refurbishing a 1988 GT Karakoram that I found abandoned in a ditch. The finish is too unique to repaint and seeing there's a spray.bike product that can possibly protect the pantina'ed finish, I'm willing to give it a try as well.
    Also, not sure what kind of riding you intend to do with this bike, but I'm surprised you didn't go with a narrow-wide chain for your 1x setup.

    The bicycle was uncharacterized, e united the classic with the modernism where he mounted a smaller crank with a super tooth cassette. I particularly like the classic mountain bikes with their original parts and features, I don't get into this trend of riding with a 36-tooth crank. My bike is a Monark 1993, aluminum 7006, cromoly fork, currently it is mounted with a 48/38/28 crank from the High One brand, in the future I will replace it with Suntour with the same configuration. Excellent video!

      Thanks and I totally understand. For regular riders I’m loving the simplicity of a 1x drivetrain. I didn’t think I would until I did it but I still love the olds stuff too.

    Just stunning, I had flashbacks, cutting off the sti mounts on the brake levers... Cup and cone bottom brackets... U brakes... cantilever brakes...and the awesome Ritchey, but I'd be worried that lower race on the headset came off so easy from the forks, I've had this before, it can be fatal, but finding a tight lower race will mean a new headset...

    neat build I am curious why they could have mounted the brakes under the chain stays like that.

    • @oldshovel
      @oldshovel  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure either. Perhaps for the added strength from the thickness of the chain stays vs the seat stays making them stuffer.
