    The flat math and the randomness is what makes the Shadowdark Fighter so awesome. They do add flat bonuses to attacks and damage which sets them apart in combat.

    I really love and appreciate all your Shadowdark content! Love your balanced and thoughtful approach to analyzing the similarities/differences by Sd and 5e, as well as the After Action reports on your sessions! Keep up the great work!

    I'm a huge fan of the Shadowdark content you've been doing lately. I am also a fan of your Lazy GM work, and am currently using your template, so thank you very much for sharing that with the community! I wanted to try to help clarify something, as I am also a new DM to Shadowdark:
    I've heard you comment on the "crawling" initiative (as opposed to combat initiative) a couple of times now in this series. I wanted to mention that I've seen Kelsey say that even she doesn't necessarily hold to the crawling initiative, unless a player is being left out of play due to certain circumstances
    It's a system that needs to be referenced judiciously, and enforced in certain scenarios so as to not be an obstacle to play. This is done with consideration to the group of players., and will be more applicable to a group of new players, mix of new and old , or mix of gregarious and shy players
    For instance, when you have a subsect of player(s) controlling the game in such a way that they may be unintentionally excluding other player's opportunities. When that's occurring, you can ask them to wait to do that action, and ask the aforementioned player(s) who haven't done something in awhile if there is something they would like to do
    Kelsey mentioned needing to use the system most often when operating demos at cons.
    I can also see it being enforced when the party is nearing danger, where initiative order or sequence of events may be important for determining the outcome of an action (trying to block a door off as a monster unknowingly approaches from the outer hallway)
    Anyways, I hope that's helpful for continuing to understand what SD rules you need to adhere to, and which ones you can wiggle around in

    To tie the shape to a character in owlbear, you've got the attach (A) option. Click on the object, and in the interaction menu that comes up, there's a little chain symbol, or the keyboard shortcut A will allow you to attach two or more objects together. The receiving object is the one that stays in place, so if you tend to move things by the bigger object, attach the character to the light, rather than the other way around. The thing you attach can be moved to change the relative position to the other object.

      I do this all the time - its one of my favorite asspects of the new 2.0. I also do this for vehicles and attach my players to it so I just have to move one item.

      @@jasondalberti4635 It's an excellent feature. I use it all the time for players with familiars or summons, or when my players use the draw tool for something hilarious relating to another character.

    We play OSE and roll 3d6 down and you'd be surprised how many characters make high level when they didn't have amazing scores and how many great stat characters die early. Also, for those who doubt the process. Just stick with it. Once your characters hit 4/5th level the game flips on a dime from "dungeon horror/survival delving" to "character development" like you might see in 5e as the players are more powerful and less squishy. The backstory is what brought you to this level collectively and those memories at the table. At least that has been my experience.

    • @andrewstraight2961
      @andrewstraight2961 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That’s my experience as well. My group loves and embraces the randomness to the point where we roll class as well! We find that the roll playing possibilities/ideas increase when you try to justify why your character class/stat combo makes sense, even if they don’t match the traditional min/max ideas.

    • @sumdude4281
      @sumdude4281 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@andrewstraight2961 we had players playing classes they NEVER would have played b/c of the stats and ended up loving those classes. You're 100% right. They take those stats and those classes and end up making role playing opportunities out of the situation.

    Thanks for this glimpse into your proces.
    You can attach pretty much anything to a character. Draw the circle, and then with the *drawing tool* pointer - left end of the tool bar for drawing - you can then click on the circle and attach it to a character token.

    In our game my players return to save town at the end of every game. And next time they explore dungeons further.
    They know that they should escape the dungeon before end and plan accordingly. If they don't escape, I have a table to check if they are safe.
    This also helps a lot with mixed group, where I don't know who will play next time.

    Roll20 is GREAT for SD. You can give light sources to specific characters easily, and use FOW to shade where they’ve been.

    For light get the fog of war extension. You then can set a light radius for character tokens which auto removes the fog.
    I set all PC tokens to a radius of 1 so a player can always see their token.
    I attached another token to the PC token to represent a torch, light spell , or lantern. That token then gets a light radius for it's type.

    A Fighter can reach +7 with their favorite weapon without gong to extremes. Lets do the math let's say they rolled 14 Str. It is very likley they get a +1 on their attack either from +2 into Str (Roll of 7-9 or 12) or a +1 to attacks (roll of 3-6). Only a roll of 2, 10 or 11 won't give them a + to attack.
    So each fighter picks a mastered weapon they gain +1 attack and + 1 damage. So any fighter should at least start with a +3 more likley with a +4 to hit. At Level 2 weapon mastery increases by +1. So we are at +4 to +5 for a fighter to hit with a bad roll on their Str (or Dex).
    Level 3 sees another chance to get +2 Str or +1 to attacks with the same probability as before. By now it is really bad luck to never roll it. So the corridor is from +4 to +6. Level 4 sees increased weapon mastery so +5 to +7. A fighter with particulary bad luck is still a bit of but one that had the minimum on ability roll but otherwise managed to get a +1 on both talent rolls would be already at +7 (and +3 to all damage rolls with their weapon of choice).
    A fighter who consequently never rolls a talent that increases their attack would need to reach level 8 though for a +7 to hit (and +5 to damage). Though by then a magic weapon that gets them there earlier shouldn't be out of question.
    Overall Fighters are pretty darn powerfull with their weapon mastery. At least when fighting is concerned. Which is kind of th point of the class and thus good design.
