    The point is to find the alternative to using lye. Sure you can argue this technically isn't soap, under the FDA guidelines. However, we all know just how well things are approved for use and have a harmful impact on the environment and on people. So, I personally appreciate this video. I think it's beneficial into progress of not using any inorganic compound formula.

      I hate to bust your bubble but....Lye and baked soda are on the same acid scale. for example: If lye is at the top of the scale at 10 in acidic...Baked soda is at a 5 in acidic. There's zero way of making soap without this type of chemical reaction. So, instead of using the max on the scale of acidic you can use the lower range baked soda gives you. Did I explain that ok?? In Chemistry- you must have the acid to get the oil to saponify. People bash Lye as being this bad thing and baked soda as being so good for you.....well....its the exact same thing only weaker. Don't let them fool you. Lye completely disappears once the oils have saponified into soap. That's why you see people use PH testing strips to make sure the lye is gone and the PH is neutral. Hope this helps you. Happy New Year.

      People need to educate themselves of the benefits of lye soap! Nothing wrong with lye. It's made from limestone and clay! Lye soap has been used for thousands of years. Natural nothing synthetic. I feel clean n fresh bathing with lye soap. The lye disappears actually!

    Large amounts of baking soda can be converted into washing soda by being heated to evaporate the water from it. Most of us who make our own laundry detergent use washing soda as the base so I could see why in this video they used baking soda to make some type of "liquid soap" scrub here. Both baking soda and lye are alkaline natural products but this to me is more of an exfoliant than soap and without some type of fat added to it would over time dry out the skin compared to a hard bar of soap with fats/oils added to help combat dryness during cleansing of the skin.

      If we add oil with the baking soda then would it not prevent the dryness?

      No they don´t. Nablus soap is a real soap made with just water, olive oil and lye. Check the website. You can not make soap without lye. It´s not magic. It´s simple science.

  • @jaytee3baxter
    @jaytee3baxter 2 ปีที่แล้ว +88

    No lye remains in properly formulated, fully saponified soap. And baking soda is also alkaline, but it doesn't make soap. It makes a soft scrub. I personally wouldn't use it on my skin! Superfatted soap is much milder on your skin.

    • @BigMikeINDAHOUSE
      @BigMikeINDAHOUSE 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Baking soda does make soap, you can only make it through hot process though, otherwise the chemical reaction doesnt take place.
      If you need more proof just look up Palestinian soap, they have been making hard bar soap with baking soda for hundreds of years.

      It's not soap but a scrub..after curing there will be no caustic in soap made with lye..so nobody should bother about caustic in soap..

  • @mrs.harris1520
    @mrs.harris1520 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

    There's no oil in it for the saponification process to happen. So it can't be classified as soap. But baking soda is great for exfoliating and cleansing skin for those of us with allergies to FDA approved soaps. There's a reason why most of the products made in the US are banned in over 30 countries.

    • @anouk891
      @anouk891 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hallo everyone, I am a bit consurned about the fact that no oil has been used or applied, during the process.
      I also have a question, about the conservation of the product.
      Does one need to add some extra citric related products or anything else for a healthfull conservation of the result?
      With kind regards, Anouk.

    Lye isn't left in the soap after saponification. That's why you let it cure for up to 4 to 6 weeks. This video is just so ill informed. And baking soda which is great but like someone else mention is a scrub. You wouldn't want to rub that on psoriasis or eczema. It'll make it worse.

    Questo NON è un sapone ma al massimo uno scrub, per non parlare del fatto che anche il bicarbonato può causare irritazione alla pelle con un uso continuativo. Nel sapone NON rimane soda! Ma si trasforma insieme all'olio e acqua appunto in sapone, che è ricco anche di glicerina un prodotto della saponificazione. Infine la ricetta di questo "sapone" è decisamente poco accurata e precisa! Quanta acqua? Quanto bicarbonato? Quanti ml di olio essenziale? Se decidi di fare un video sull'alternativa al sapone almeno bisogna essere precisi sui quantitativi, perché è una cosa che la gente userà sulla propria pelle! Non si può pensare di mettere un po' di "questo" e un po' di "quello" nel calderone e poi consigliarlo come metodo alternativo al sapone . No NAOH o KOH? niente sapone mi spiace...

    There is so much wrong with this video, I don’t know where to start. Not only is the information wrong, but potentially harmful.
    Saponification occurs when oil is mixed with lye, which is first dissolved in water. The oil and lye have a chemical reaction that results in soap.
    Oil + lye water = soap + glycerin.
    Homemade soap done correctly contains no residual lye, but does contain an abundance of glycerin. It is not harsh on the skin. Most soap makers use more oil than is necessary for the saponification process, which added to the glycerin byproduct makes the soap extra moisturizing.
    Too much oil bad for the skin? Oils are used to moisturize the skin. After water, oil is typically the main ingredient in lotions and conditioners. Different oils have different properties, so it is possible to select oils to help specific skin or hair problems. Oil is mildly acidic, so is good for our mildly acidic skin.
    Baking soda, like lye, is alkaline and is harsh on skin and hair. It is far less corrosive than lye, but still harsh. By all means, if you want to strip all the oils from your skin and hair, scrub with baking soda, but you will need to follow up with a vinegar rinse and a good lotion or conditioner.
