From what he said it wasn't his preference, and someone else pitched the idea for this show before he rejected it. Obviously that's *his word* on it, but I'd believe it personally. Unfortunate how common of an occurrence it was though in animated media.
@@Hi_Just_FredAfter Killing Joke movie,I don't wanna see any BarbaraxBruce(Or any Barbara ship with other Batfam member besides Dick) so it is good to hear that it isn't happening in this show anytime soon.
@@Deviant-Strategic-AssassinsBarbara having a small girl crush on Bruce is fine, but he shouldn’t reciprocate those feelings, especially since thats one of his best friend’s daughters and has known her since she was a kid. It comes off as very creepy, selfish and undisciplined of Batman to pursue her. The Bat-family works best anyway when they’re treated as a family with the robins and batgirls treated like Batman’s kids.
I remember everyone was hyping this show up and saying it was going to overshadow and be better then My Adventures With Superman only for the opposite to happen
Shows like Iron Man Armored Adventures & My Adventures With Superman had a lot of episoded focused on the other characters & even ones were the main guy barely appears, yet they still manage to be so fun & entretaining because they managed to make us care for said characters (LET'S BE REAL, who here doesn't love Hyper-active Pepper & Lois) The issue to me wasn't that Batman appear barely, is that BRUCE BARELY APPEARS WHILE the characters we got instead are EXTREMELY BORING, GENERIC & UNISPIRING (PD. 2 times having René Montoya as a Main Character in less than 5 years & they still can't manage to handle nor adapt her character well)
Listen, I love Batman but I think we’re at the point where we’ve had enough Batman shows and can just have an animated series based around literally other hero, like Wonder Woman, Flash, Nightwing or Green arrow.
I don't want to sound like one of the those "back in my day" guys, but I miss when shows used to have more episodes each season. Almost every show nowadays, live-action or animated, has 8-10 episodes per season. Only live-action shows are allowed a runtime stretching over an hour as opposed to cartoons.
Or the live action ones have like 6 houe long episodes every few years or live action shows taht have been going I for dacedse with a big episode count gets 8 episodes "cough doctor who cough"
Quality over quanity? I don't know, I don't watch the telly anymore but yeah, but it's not hard to read up a wiki article and go "oh, just 13 episodes?" a decade ago that was considered a MINI-SERIES kids are getting squat these days
I do think it's funny how Bruce Timm said BTAS was a compromised vision and he never got to "Emphasis the 40s aesthetic" and instead it became more of a hybrid of an old and modern setting. And yet in this series where he "got to make the show he always wanted to make" it still feels like that 40s Batman style was never really fleshed out. (That said Bruce Timm did at least reject the pitch to make Barbara romantically interested in Bruce Wayne from another team member. lol)
i have a feeling bruce timm's name is no more than a figurehead for this show, it's a classic ruse to fool people into watching or playing something not actaully by the famous creator it claims to be and i wouldn't be suprised if bruce timm wasn't all that involved in this show
The problem with the race/gender "swapping" in the show is not necessarily the concept of it but the execution. Caped Crusader takes place in 40's United States where racism, sexism and LGBTQ+ phobia was the norm, so seeing people from these marginalized communities being in positions of power that were mostly reserved by white men and them having little pushback because of it harms the series suspension of disbelief, paints a 'sanitized' picture of the era and wastes possible interesting plot lines/drama. It would have been so compelling for example having a plotline where Gordon is chastized and attacked for being a black man in the police force and see throught the series how Gordon wrestles with himself about being in a institution that targets and brutalizes black men and how he rises above that in the end, we could have had an arc with Bruce Wayne (being a rich white guy) grow out of his bigotry and become a better Batman but we didn't. I think that if you are going to use an actual historical period for your fictional story you need to potray it faithfully with wartz and all, if you try to 'sanitize' it (as mentioned earlier) it will lead to people having a false impression about the era and make them think that it was 'better' than it actual was... it's easy to see how can this lead to reactionary viewpoints. A great example of potraying historical eras faithfully is Martin Scorsese with movies like Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Silence, The Irishman and Killers of the Flower Moon, he potrays these eras faithfully with all the bigotry that entails but he respects the audience's intelligence enough by presuming that they should already know that these things were bad and the movie is not endorsing them. Other great examples are Kubrick's Barry Lyndon, Tarkovsky's Andrei Rublev and Pontecorvo's Battle of Algiers and Queimada.
Showing a more faithful portrayal of the era would have opened the doors to some truly interesting plot lines/drama. You could still have people from these marginalized communities being in positions of powers, but show them receiving at least a semi realistic amount of pushback relative to that era.
@@afanofjustice shit i forgot about lucius why wasnt he in this show if they wanted more black characters he was already well established too or doctor kinsolving oh my GOD
Marginalized people like vintage worlds as well, so there's nothing wrong with reinterpreting them in a multicultural way where various kinds of people can be represented in a decent story. It is an escapist comic book world and pretty much an Elseworld, anyway.
I love to imagine the behind the scenes process of every production JJ Abrams is involved with goes like this “Ok now that it’s just me and a bunch of talented people, let me shed my human skin and suck up everyone’s talent with my tentacles.” Star Wars, Star Trek, lord of the rings. Now Batman. Every production he’s associated with becomes garbage
14:15 personally I think a great way to adapt him would be putting him in a spider verse style series wether there would be a movie or show where the onomatopoeia actually appears on screen when he says it, him being voiced his optional. Personally, my biggest problem with shows betrayal is that they removed all the creepy aspects of the character, like he both felt like a super villain, but he also almost felt like slasher villain because of how cold and detached he felt, but in the show where he’s giving goons and stuff it just doesn’t hit the same.
With this show i learned that even if your show resembles the Golden Age comics or the Cartoon you watched as a kid, it doesn't guarantee that it's going to be good.
I find it weird how this series in general has a cast of classic Batman characters… and then there's Renee Montoya, Harley and a fucking Green Arrow villain.
While I wouldn't say this series was amazing or did anything too groundbreaking with the character of Batman, I still had a good time with it and enjoyed all the unique interpretations of classic Batman villains and some characters, as it's not trying to be BTAS but still honours the legacy of the show. I honestly really liked this shows unique takes on Clayface, Harley Quinn, Onomatopoeia, Two Face, Gentleman Ghost and Nocturna. I do think Hamish Linklater does a solid job as this new take on Batman and while he's no Kevin Conroy and Im glad hes not trying to be Kevin Conroy, he's doing his own thing with the character and I can respect his performance and Im sure in future seasons he can vocally embody the character so much more with more time. I do wish the show better utilised the 1940's era/Golden Age tone more and I do wish the animation was a bit better but despite that I can see a lot of potential with this show and all the new takes on classic characters we're familiar with and to see this Batman grow as a character. I'm interested to see this show's take on Joker and other characters
personally i wish they went with diedrech bader's batman because his is really good and has a lotta potential, he ends up voicing the lame twoface in this show who dies anyway so pbbbbbt
Agreed. Dc glazes Harley constantly. The series should have stuck to Batman villains introduced before 1950. (Ie Hugo Strange, Mad Monk, Dr Death, etc)
Honestly i dont dislike her in this but she should have just been her own orginal character because this one holds 0 similarities and Harleys already got a perfectly fine shtick
@@snowbunnie1113 When Caped Crusader was announced as it's own thing. I expected those villains to appear with Hugo Strange being the greater scope villain.
I think it’s a little hypocritical to say the race swapping of the Gordon’s isn’t a problem but frame it as a detriment when talking about firebug, I think the point of that character and why they didn’t make him firefly is the fact that the character was supposed to be some weird nobody that no one’s heard of, he’s not even good enough to be firefly to me that’s what I thought the point was
Yeah, that was weird and hypocritical. Basically he said that white characters can be race swapped, but don’t ever touch black characters. It should either all be okay, or none of it should.
Yeah I found that part weird too specially since he went on that whole rant about not having a problem with the race swaps, I don't think he genuinely has a problem with him being white but still weird
@@snowbunnie1113 Yeah personally I think all of it is for the worse and doesn’t equate at all to real representation but if you’re gonna take a stance for race swapping you should apply it evenly across the board
raceswapping well known characters thatre white into black has always been a cheap way by people who cant write characters good or make good original characters that happen to have different skin colors and an easy way to look diverse without actaully putting effort into making the characters diverse in their development, its surface level brownie points is what it is batspecter said a misguided tangent about just people annoyed by raceswapping rather than getting to the actual root of why its so arbitrary and insincere while also still complaining aout raceswapping himself but in the "bad" version i mean come on
Okay I do have a few notes actually. For starters, Nocturna in CC was originally supposed to be an adult! However it was changed, honestly I think for the better, the original plotline had her be a philanthropist funding the orphanage where all those potential Robins came from but in reality she was sucking their soul energy. I think the crew thought this felt too dark, like, gives off child predator vibes, so this was changed to the plot we got. Secondly, Firebug was actually retconned in the comics to be white, which was what I imagined the CC team based their version on. This does suck tbh, wished they did keep him as black and all. Now as for the villain reinventions? Oh boy there's quite a few that would need changing while others just need fleshing out. I'm also not sure why they had Penguin taken down the first episode??? Kinda messes with the whole "Batman shows up, now crime is changing from old school mobs to supervillains." Thing. This is also just a small thing but the show does hint at it's time period a bit more, there's hints of sexism, racism, class disparity, etc. Honestly wished they doubled down on these, like maybe not all of Gotham is as progressive but is forced to be due to whatever bs you can come up with.
Do you know a missed opportunity this show had that I thought of when I realized that Harley in this version is Asian? If the story takes place in the 40s, they could have done something a year after WW2, among some things they could have explored the issues of the concentration camps for Asians that the USA created.
I wouldn't outright call it bigotry, but the show runners never give good reason or lean into the swaps that they make, or when they do it's to beat a message into our heads. I don't think people have a problem with minorities in their shows, it's really more "why did you change the character, if your not going to do anything with the changes?" What's the point in changing the aesthetics of a character if they are still simply the same EXACT character but now [enter trait here]. To the fans, especially the hardcore it's akin to character theft. Instead of trying to streamline representation on the backs of established characters they should be putting the money and time into real representation with good characters and stories.
I despise the raceswaps, because I fucking know they did the raceswaps to shield themselves from criticism, i don't want a damn, bland, black Jim Gordon, I want a reinvention of him like how Samuel L. Jackson redefined Nick Fury goddamn it! Harley Quinzel can be whatever race they fucking want, just make the whole jester persona interesting and don't just waste her or any of the villains into dumb plots or unsatisfactory endings, make Clay Face the most vaguely etnic guy on earth pre-clay transformation, just use it to build something intriguing and out of the mold. I liked this version of the Harley Quinn, it's a neat use of her damn PhD in psychology which often is only used as a gag.
Thank you so much for the Disclaimer/statement at 10:00. It's always nice to find a super nerdy/comic book channel that offers a lot of (well-earned) criticism for things without said channel constantly being "Woke! DEI! WOKE!"
Thankfully more channels are coming out with much better way of analyzing media without going woke/DEI and channels that do use those getting called out by communities there are in(Hello ASK A.I.R,Andypants and Shadversity/Knightswatch),it is nice to see after last 8 to 9 years of calling everything new and conterversial woke.
10:00 I get what your saying but it’s completely counterintuitive when race swapping gender swapping type of stuff is just done for the purpose of ticking a box cuz it feels completely insincere.
It’s weird how the LEGO Batman Movie (A parody of Batman movies) does a better job at understanding who Batman is more then the Caped Crusader (An actual Batman series).
5:03, Considering how Ed Brubaker had a hand in this show and he also wrote the Gotham Central book, which focused on the GCPD trying to do stuff without Batman, I'm honestly not surprised.
I think it's very hypocritical from you saying that you "don't mind the race-swaps" when talking about characters like Jim Gordon, Barbara Gordon and Harley Quinn and yet complaining about Firebug's race-swap. My main problem with these things is simply why? What the race-swap or gender-swap (in Penguin's case) adds to said character? And as you pointed out in your own video the response is simply nothing, it feels more like you (referred to the showrunners) want to pander to an inexistent audience than actually find a way to have characters of different races or sex in your show. For example why, instead of using Penguin and gender-swap him, they didn't simply use Lola Lasagne? She was a Batman's villain in the Batman '66 show and the only aspects of her character that we get from that show are that: - she is the leader of a gang (like many Batman '66 villains) - she is a friend of the Penguin - she loves to eat lasagna They could have just used her in Penguin's place and this way they could have: - had a strong woman as Gotham's biggest crime boss - avoided all the vitriol from the people that despise the gender-swaps - added Lola all the new aspects that this version of Penguin has like the love for cabaret, instead of replacing many of Oswald's real interests, since as i pointed out Lola can only benefit from obtaining more traits - used her as a trampoline for the introduction of the Penguin in a future season (after all they are friends so it makes sense that she could ask him for help).
@Jasonwithadot If you're referring to Firebug it is a race swap. Even if the character has so many similarities to Firefly as you can see even in the clip in this video he is Firebug and Rigger (the first and most famous Firebug in the comics) is african american.
My problems with Caped Crusader: Batman: Why is he a dick to Alfred? He raised you alone since you were 8 and you call him Pennyworth? I thought you were Bruce not Damian. What’s up with his relationship with Harvey? Usually Harvey is a childhood or college friend of Bruce, but in the show their friendship feels so fake, like he was just friends to get information. Commissioner Gordon: Should have been in it more, he felt like a background character. Barbara: Why is she Bruce’s age? Timm, nobody likes that ship. And why doesn’t she act anything like Barbara? When I first watched I legit thought she was Barbara Kean, Jim’s wife. Clayface: Didn’t feel threatening enough, his hostage just casually talked back to him. Penguin: Why weren’t you Sofia Falcone? She has two sons, there was no excuse. Firebug: Why wasn’t he just Firefly? He had the suit, I thought he was Lynns when I first watched it. Also why did he have a pathetic Killer Moth vibe to him? I have never gotten that vibe from either Firefly or Firebug Harley Quinn: Why weren’t you Hugo Strange? The story even fits his character better Catwoman: Why was she an idiot? She dates Batman and regularly escapes from him, that character is anything but stupid. Nocturna: Why are you attacking kids? Surely you could lure adults and you have super strength so you could just beat them up. Why did she have a medical condition? I’m unfamiliar with the character but Isn’t she like a full on vampire, I swear she doesn’t have that soul sucking thing, that’s just borderline supernatural and clearly you weren’t afraid to use supernatural villains. Papa Midnite: Why weren’t you a Magic User Batman regularly meets like Jason Blood or John Constantine or Zatara? This is very minor I just thought this was kinda a weird pick and that ending with him taking Ghost away made him seem super villainous, kinda surprised Batman didn’t just keep Ghost as a trophy. Deadshot: He’s the second best Assassin in the world! How was he taken out in 5 seconds by GCPD members? Two-Face: What was up with the design? That’s a first draft attempt.
Original Nocturna was not a vampire. She had a skin condition because of extreme radiowave exposure. And she tried to take Jason away from Bruce.Nocturna in this show is weird amalgamation of original version and 90s Robin run version(That Nocturna did have powers like this one but she is not the same person from silver age and she was enemies to Tim Drake and Stephanie Brown, not Bruce Wayne and Jason Todd) and Wednesday Adams plus some original stuff from the show.
Calling people who have a problem with the race swaps “people who lose sleep over seeing minorities in your super hero cartoon” is a little disingenuous. That’s not the reason why they have a problem with the race swaps and calling them “bigots” or “anti-woke grifters” for criticizing the show doesn’t invite room for discussion. You are just silencing and dehumanizing anyone who disagrees with you and your opinion. There are probably a lot of normal people who aren’t bigots or anti woke grifters who don’t like the race swaps or other aspects “woke” aspects of the show.
I don’t like the reason they had for gender bending penguin being that Batman didn’t have a lot of female villains which isn’t all that true. They could’ve easily showcased one of Batman’s less well known female rogues. I think other channels have talked about this.
@ I’m not even talking about loads of obscure villains. I’m talking about just one or two. I’m sure there are villains not yet brought to screen who have potential for interesting stories in this continuity including from golden age.
I swear I usually don’t care about gender swaps, but something about Penguin being a woman because there weren’t any strong women villains beyond the usual three. And on a level I get that, there aren’t many that are relevant nowadays, but you couldn’t have reinvented one? Pull out Mime or something and make her more interesting? It’s like if Paul Dini looked at Mr. Freeze and said “nah, this guy will never work. Let’s just give Two-Face a cold gun.” Again, I ain’t trying to say that Penguin being a woman is a plot to end masculinity. Just seems kinda lazy to me from a creative standpoint.
In theory, a story where Batman heavily relies on the Gcpd to do detective work and he just shows up to punch people for a bit could work if he later had to learn how to be a detective (I think Earth one Batman was kinda like this). Idk man maybe this cartoon was originally supposed to be a Gcpd police procedural but then got turned into a Batman show
It was supposed to be more BTAS seasons at first, Bruce Timm wasn't interested in that. He ended up agreeing to do more if it was instead more set in the 40s and be it's own thing.
kind of ironic that for a show to be set in the 40's has a lot of modern day ideologies and topics. Plus I am kinda tired of seeing Batman being in his early years of his career as the masked vigilante (again) The only show that tried something new and different enough was Batman Beyond and even then for a show that came out in the late 90's it still shows some real life issues that can be adressed during these times we live in.
10:27 So you bent to the knee to the insane people who would tarnish characters that older fans loved just to suit their ideological or fetishistic needs. People like you are the reason why many franchised were left butchered because you refused to see the insanity that those ideologues have done so maliciously, all to just protect your oh so sweet optics.
I have not been so disappointed with a Batman project since Arkham Knight. I was expecting something like BTAS & Brave and the Bold, where those were major love letters to the Golden, Silver, and Bronze Age. But this show never really went that far. It’s very dull and doesn’t do anything very new. I’ve been dying to see an animated series that really went all-in on the Golden Age Batman continuity. Didn’t even have the balls to put on the purple gloves. I like that they used the Alfred Beagle name, but why not go farther and have no Alfred at all? Really go back to the days when Batman didn’t have any partners or a Batcave, or even a black car. We got Golden Age Clayface, but no Mad Monk, Doctor Death, or even my man Hugo Strange. Such a shame. Didn’t even make him a killer. And I’m quite sure this show won’t have the balls to do Robin
@ I’m talking about Bats. I wanted the original killer Batman of the Golden Age. I need to see an official animated recreation of him swinging in to step on a guy’s neck as he looks out the window. Still one of the coolest kills I’ve ever seen in fiction
"And I’m quite sure this show won’t have the balls to do Robin"Tbf considering both tone show goes for and Bruce Timm's track record with robins in DCAU,I don't think including robins/batgirls in this show would be ideal and that is coming from someone that actually likes robins and batgirls
@ I’m not really sure Bruce Timm has ever hated Dick Grayson. There were always attempts by the JL team to utilize the character in the show, but could never work it out due to creative stumpness and legal issues. Then there was the fact that Bruce had pitched a Teen Titans show starring the original Robin years before Justice League was a blip in his mind. I don’t think Bruce Timm being a Batman x Batgirl shipper means he hates Grayson. The only Robin it seemed any of the DCAU staff loathed was Jason Todd, as several interviews from the 90s have Paul Dini discussing how he and others on the TNBA team didn’t like him. But yeah, I doubt we’d ever see Robin make it on this show
@@joeker5208 It is less of Bruce Timm hating them and more of not using them well and being inferior to their comicbook counterparts.Ie Nightwing being a brooder and not a matured and well adjusted superhero like he was in the comics, whole Harley Quinn movie where he was a complete goofball and gets taken down by Harley for reason, not to mention that bed scene. As for Tim,instead of adapting Tim into TNBA they just used Jason's bacstory and some of his characteristics then called him Tim Drake(Granted, they also did that to Kyle where they used Hal's origin but called him Kyle).Which also makes me question the claims about DCAU crew not liking Jason since they used his stuff for Tim,they even made a family friendly version of Death in the family with Return of the Joker.
Gonna have to disagree, in my opinion. I loved Caped Crusader, and how they changed familiar villains, and introduced some lesser known ones akin to how BTAS did the same thing when it started. Oswalda Cobblepot has to be my favourite take on The Penguin so far, having her be a complete opposite personality wise, yet just as, if not more, sadistic as previous versions of the Penguin. Harley Quinn was also nice to see how they changed her, and since it seems like DC is trying to make a Harley Quinn that moved past the Joker, it was nice to see them just cut out all the middle bits and have her start off completely separately from the Joker. Also seeing Harleen Quinzel before she appeared as the villain was great, as previously the most we got from that half of her life was in flashbacks or small appearances in comics, and the personality swap they did with Harleen being friendly and happy and Harley Quinn being quiet and serious was an interesting choice I liked. The show was also a way for Bruce Timm and the other writers to make a Batman series that actually took place in the 1940s, as though BTAS was inspired by the ‘40s in design, it didn’t actually take place then, and used a lot more technology that didn’t exist back then (yes, Caped Crusader still has some better tech than they had, but it still feels mostly plausible). I’m personally excited for a Season 2, and to watch how Batman and Bruce Wayne evolve closer to the kinder Batman we knew in BTAS.
0:51 "Let's be honest with ourselves" nothing. Not everyone is as dismissive as you. 60's shows most definitely count, not least because that was the golden age of television.
Ah yes; Caped Crusader, Guest Starring Batman. It's like they fully misunderstood what they were supposed to do. The multiple, *lazy* race swaps (And genderswapping in Peguin's case), butchering characters, wasting characters (Two-Face's death) and shoving the main character into the background... Harley is a good point where the character is pointlessly changed; aside from being a psychiatrist what is similar? Why not redesign her to be more like, say, a geisha and rename her? Then you have a brand new character.
I think the issue is that its been years since the last major batman show and what do we get? A worse btas repeating the same ol character of batman learning to be better? Id rather we just get a batfamily cartoon already
This show felt really empty for me. I think they missed out on the fun of being a golden age batman show. Bring back some cool golden age batman villains, emphasize a low tech batman, instead of making barbara a lawyer make her a librarian like when she first debuted. Maybe the first episode should’ve been a redux of the strange days short.
I hadn't even heard of this series until now, but if they were going with a 40s theme why add in more recent villain's, sure Harley Quinn is well known, but she first appeared in the 90s, why not show off some of his old villain's that wouldn't make sense in the modern day like the Penny Plunderer?
I've watched this show back when it released and forgot about it in a week. I got shocked when you mentioned Barbara, honestly I don't even remember her being there. Also firefly not being firefly is crazy
To me with the race swaps and gender swaps they seem like new characters with the same name as someone we know. They don't really do anything with it other than maybe Penguin with what you brought up for her IMO at least. So I think it would have been better if they were new characters to change up the formula. This is an early on Batman as well Year 2 or 3 in the 40's at least off the corruption and the suit. So the original characters could have not come to Gotham yet or underground to Younger Batman and the PD.
My problem with the character designs are that I adore Bruce Timm’s artstyle, but here it feels like a mixture of his style, early comic style and weirdly enough Disney-esque characters?
Saying the Gordons being black has no effect on the character and goin on a "no bigotry here on this channel boohoo" rant and then heel turning on Firebug bein white reeks of Reddit mod behaviour.
This show to me was something like Disenchantment and Hazbin Hotel (Yes, "and", not "or"), good ideas, but needs to figure itself out, and have more time. It look like it tried to have both the self containded episodes of BTAS and other series of the time, and the overarching plot of more recent ones, which is certainly doable, it just didn't hit the landmark. That, and get used to the animation style, the Invincible team did figure out how to cut corners and save for the important parts, Caped Crusader team still has to. For instance, another thing the team said which in the show felt like a stretch, the Batman - Catwoman relationship, which is watered down by having the flashbacks to Bruce's childhood. If it were two different episodes, o had a longer run time. It would have been fun to see Batman left other crimes unattended to focus more on her, to give emphasis to the "triggered his horny teenager", and see how being horny makes Bruce act more like an actual human. Also, do want that Arkham Shadow video, pls.
Yeah, you dont care about Thhe Penguin being a woman, but you would flip your shit if a male character casualy wore makeup never mentioned in plot or if it was a male version of Wonder Woman in skimpy clothing Stop it with the simping, will ya
Thank you for telling the truth dude. Caped crusader was clearly made by ppl who didn’t care and it’s truly insulting imo as a fan of the golden age earth two Bruce Wayne that this bore was what we got. Absolutely no versatility for those old comics, without the history & heart behind them. Until I get my dream earth two style Batman show, I’m happy we at least have the brave and the bold.
I wouldn't say they didn't care. But someone like Paul Dini definitely should have been there to help them execute their ideas much more effectively. Something that could have been really good now is just pretty mediocre.
@@GamerSlyRatchet1 I personally think that's due to the Dcau being milked too much already, so much so that there isn't much you can do with it that hasn't been done, and them being limited by the continuity, so they can't just go outside of an established thing & everything has to have little impact so that it would make sense that it wasn't mentioned in points after in Dcau. Like Jason's introduction in the Dcau timeline. First, Tim in this universe was already too much influenced by Jason. And his breaking was just a repeat of the stuff with Tim in Return of Joker. Second, in regards to the impact thing, it had to be as little as possible so the characters not mentioning him in Dcau make sense.
i personally enjoyed this series, but you have some good points. i do wish we had more time with the villains (penguin and harley especially), and youre right about bruce being a dick. also, i really appreciate you having actual criticism instead of just "penguin is a woman and some characters arent white, therefore this show sucks"
I FUCKING hate the "Batman just appears and beats people up and leaves". How to ruin a character. Seriously Bruce Timm you created the other so well known and historical animated series but now you're falling down losing any charm.
I'm pretty open to stories altering the Batman formula. Hell, a Batman set in the 40s is honestly a really cool concept, I just wished they used concepts from that era more often,. The best episodes were they actually implemented and reinterpreted characters from that era like Clayface. Whenever they tried to make something on their own like Harley Quinn or a Barbara Gordon that wasn't Barbara Gordon it fell flat for me. Also, if you want to make your series more diverse and impactful to a modern audience wouldn't this be the era to do it with? Instead they just cast lesbian and black characters in roles they wouldn't have in that era. It's nothing something that bothers me but then why set it in this era if it doesn't even feel accurate to that era?
It's genuinely surprising how stale every single frame of the show looks. It's like they forgot why BTAS looks as good as it does. Also the Ultimate Alien comparison was hilariously accurate (fuck fasttrack).
Not shocked at all at the mediocrity. Simple pattern recognition with the mild wokeness. I know ya say you don’t care, but these are directly correlated and often even causal. No grift here, and no bigotry. I am the minority these people try to appeal to.
10:00 I would like to say this regarding your statement here. Firstly I wasn't expecting you to cover anything regarding the race or gender swaps as others have already done so, and just like you, I don't care about it either. Having said that, I usually don't care for these things when it comes to live action, as there's been plenty of times where the actor/actresses can usually do a great job in their performances of these characters. Hell Harvey Dent in both of the Tim Burton Batman movies was black and no one took issue with it. However, this show is a cartoon that is supposedly set in the 1940s. Race and gender swapping characters in a cartoon set for that time is pointless and is only done for "muh representation." I refuse to call this kind of stuff woke because that word has pretty much lost all its meaning. Truth be told, it's just nonsensical. If you want further proof of this, Raven Knight made a video some time ago covering an article giving their reasons why Penguin was gender swapped. Saying quote "Batman had a lack of good villains and wanted more female ones." th-cam.com/video/PUMg7oVhHo0/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared
He seems to assume that anyone who has an issue with race swapping is a racist. Not everyone is a racist and his assumption is kinda simple minded and make him out as a gatekeeper.
@LabRatz-Ivor meh, as the guy pointed out in the video they really didn't succeeded with their originality with characters like Harvey, Firebug or Catwoman. But I respect your opinion, also I admit that Harley being more of a Hugo Strange like character was quite interesting, bit it would've been cool to see more of it.
I agree with most points, but I do wanna say Bruce Timm gets way more credit than he should. He did contribute a good amount to bias and the ensuing universe spawned from it. But Paul Dini did most of the iconic moments and elements from the dcau. Recently, Timm has been a big name to attach to things without bringing the secret sauce
Not just Dini. Alan Burnet, Martin Pasko, Andrea Romano and the other writers and composers played a roled in developing BTAS. Why is it everyone forget these people and just bring up Tim and Paul?
@tayojones9460 not to discredit the others, but Dini and Tim are the two closest linked to the creation of the series. Even if it's argumentative that the others played a bigger role with the iconic status it has. However, my point was that Bruce Timm hit it big with btas and more or less peaked, but still tries to ride off the success by plastering his name on projects. Meanwhile, the others are doing good work without needing to put their name on it. I didn't solo out Dini and Timm. I was just trying to keep it brief by not listing every factor
Love seeing this guy in my feed and thinking “who is this?” Clicking the video and thinking “oh yeah Godzilla mandoza but Batman instead of spider man” Love your stuff keep making videos
This PISSES ME OFF, because I've said for YEARS I'd like to see Batman return to the 1940s. I agree 60's would be cool, like the 1960's show but SERIOUS. The 80's (like Tim Burton version) would be cool too. Maybe even a grimy, "Warriors-"esque 1970s would be an interesting concept.
I was banking on weather to watch Cape Crusader on your review. I miss BTAS and would have really like the nostalgia fix bit i guess that i can't expect that from CC. Bummer. Looking forward to the next video though!
I didn't know original Firebug story,so hearing it here makes me more confused and dissapointed that they didn't use firefly in the show. Also I don't think we are getting any robins and/or batgirls in this show given the tone they are going for with this show.
The scene with young Bruce and Alfred was so close to being good but it was kinda ruined by kid Bruce’s delectation at the end. What would have worked better if Bruce didn’t say anything and had this look of pure determination and sadness as Alfred looks on horrified.
Bro the Penguin of this show was so awful, genderswapping done bad. In into the spider verse dock ock was better because it had something a bit more unique like her tentacles being made of a plastic material and still giving an unique vibe. Oswalda was terrible (just for the name already) for the fact that she was just a female without anything unique.
I personally do not see how the character is automatically worse just because they genderswapped her. And also frankly I feel like if the show had done the reverse, like making a male poison ivy, significantly less people would care. I don't think stuff like race or gender matters unless it's an absolutely integral part of the character. I think writing should be critiqued before character design, also Oswalda is a name. Not a common one but it's a name, so saying it's bad just cuz it's probably not ur first choice for a female penguin name is strange. At worst the character was fine, and she wasn't a huge part of the show, there's other more important things to talke about with this show especially in terms of criticizing it.
@Hi_Just_Fred nonononononononononononono. You misunderstood, I don't mean that gender swapping is bad, I simply mean that in here it was handled not well.
@@Hi_Just_Fred I wasn't criticizing the gender swap, i was indeed criticizing the writing. Sorry but to me it feels like the gender swap wasn't handled quite well.
Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't Female Doc Ock based on Lad Octopus who is basically a female Doc Ock? I know there's Electro's girlfriend who also was Electro and Scorpia but I frankly know nothing about them.
I didn’t like Caped Crusader much. But I really liked episode 8. If I had it my way I’d have Nocturna and the Robin kids return in season 2 and introduce Scarecrow in the same episode as the Doctor who is treating Natalia in the special hospital she’s in. Essentially the episode would be an adaptation of “Mistress of Fear” but with Natalia Knight instead of Becky Albright.
Don't really care too much about race swap but why being against it is bigoted? Yea acting like it is end of the world is cringe but still it would be better if they made original characters of color instead of just changing already existing one.
The main audience of comics(white) generally won’t read comics about people of other races unless that character is a version of a character they already like or are white character with another coat of paint. Also, whenever a minority character is added people complain about that too so it doesn’t work.
You're being to kind. This show sucked. A batman that can't really fight can't really do detective work and the problems go on and on. Cucked crusader more like.
I used to be on the anti-woke trend, but after realizing the people I've been listening to were awful people... I deeply regret ever using that word and I am ashamed to have listened to those Trump-supporting grifters. I hope I am forgiven one day.
You already are, friend ❤️. You are already aware, moved on, grew, reflected, and know how bad that crowd really is. You are already forgiven, because you didn’t even need it now, friend. That crowd really is its own echo chamber, and it preys on people, trying to offer them a space by insisting how “AWFUL WOKENESS AND THE OTHER SIDE IS”. It’s not till you step back and suddenly realize how immature, narrow minded, and just genuinely awful they are that it clicks. You aren’t the first, nor the last, who will/have gone through that (I even had a stint when I was young, and raised by a mother with misandrist tendencies, which cause me to get swept into that crowd for a bit, but eventually had the “wait, this crowd is awful, and is literally just gassing themselves up over practically nothing, and are just trying to make the world stagnate and hateful, and my trauma doesn’t reflect the world, like these groups say.) You are out of the crowd, and already know what people they are. You aren’t those people. You are much better, and again, have no need to be forgiven, as you already long since learned and changed ❤️. I hope you are proud of yourself, and know, if nothing else, I am proud of you, as I’m sure many others are!!
Nah nah you fooling, this show is good, each episode should be longer and msube a two parter but overall the story is good abd theres an overarching arc fot Bruce
I really loved the show. I thought the Batman itself was a very good adaption and something familiar yet different at the same time all while giving worlds greatest detective.
10:00 Media discourse is in a really terrible place currently and my happiness at hearing this rant just illustrated that clearly for me. This speech is the kind of thing that would get me to subscribe if the previous content hadn't already.
Let's be honest, seeing JJ Abrams' name being attracted to anything should be a massive red flag since he's one of the known parties for destroying Star Wars
All the fuzz about racebending characters while actively whitewashing one for unexplainable reasons has to be one of the most perplexing choices this show made, putting a spotlight on an older black villain who kinda got eclipsed by a similar white one would have been pretty cool. I feel like people forget that the golden age, while not as silly as the silver, was still really damn goofy and leaned a lot into the campy adventure pulp that birthed Batman. It really sucks that a lot of discussion around mediocre media like this gets hijacked by Le Antiwoke Peddlers so we have to waste so much breath fighting them off in order to properly criticize it (or to criticize the actual portrayal of race/gender/class/ect in how they're actually handled)

Gotta give Bruce timm credit for not putting his barbara x Bruce obsession in the show atleast
From what he said it wasn't his preference, and someone else pitched the idea for this show before he rejected it.
Obviously that's *his word* on it, but I'd believe it personally. Unfortunate how common of an occurrence it was though in animated media.

I remember everyone was hyping this show up and saying it was going to overshadow and be better then My Adventures With Superman only for the opposite to happen
for a NOIR inspired show it baffles me it doesn't lean on that style more with high contrast colors/shadows
That was also my first impression when they dropped the teaser and I agree.
Shows like Iron Man Armored Adventures & My Adventures With Superman had a lot of episoded focused on the other characters & even ones were the main guy barely appears, yet they still manage to be so fun & entretaining because they managed to make us care for said characters (LET'S BE REAL, who here doesn't love Hyper-active Pepper & Lois)
The issue to me wasn't that Batman appear barely, is that BRUCE BARELY APPEARS WHILE the characters we got instead are EXTREMELY BORING, GENERIC & UNISPIRING
(PD. 2 times having René Montoya as a Main Character in less than 5 years & they still can't manage to handle nor adapt her character well)
This feels like a show that was cancelled and were living in an alternate universe where it didn't

Only live-action shows are allowed a runtime stretching over an hour as opposed to cartoons.
youre right and you should say it. shows deserve more episodes
Or the live action ones have like 6 houe long episodes every few years or live action shows taht have been going I for dacedse with a big episode count gets 8 episodes "cough doctor who cough"
Never be ashamed to be one of those "back in my day" guys, especially when things back then were GOOD.
Quality over quanity? I don't know, I don't watch the telly anymore but yeah, but it's not hard to read up a wiki article and go "oh, just 13 episodes?" a decade ago that was considered a MINI-SERIES
kids are getting squat these days
Something similar happened to Lucius Fox in comics
Showing a more faithful portrayal of the era would have opened the doors to some truly interesting plot lines/drama. You could still have people from these marginalized communities being in positions of powers, but show them receiving at least a semi realistic amount of pushback relative to that era.
@@afanofjustice shit i forgot about lucius why wasnt he in this show if they wanted more black characters

oh my GOD
Marginalized people like vintage worlds as well, so there's nothing wrong with reinterpreting them in a multicultural way where various kinds of people can be represented in a decent story. It is an escapist comic book world and pretty much an Elseworld, anyway.
I love to imagine the behind the scenes process of every production JJ Abrams is involved with goes like this
“Ok now that it’s just me and a bunch of talented people, let me shed my human skin and suck up everyone’s talent with my tentacles.”
Star Wars, Star Trek, lord of the rings.
Other than like a Superman show where they genderswap it yeah they should put him in a Spider-Verse type way while being terrifying in its own way.
Batman keeps stealing Green Arrow villains lol. It's why Arrow stole some Batman villains as revenge.
and they were barely even the characters they were supposed to be based on
While I wouldn't say this series was amazing or did anything too groundbreaking with the character of Batman, I still had a good time with it and enjoyed all the unique interpretations of classic Batman villains and some characters, as it's not trying to be BTAS but still honours the legacy of the show.
They really shouldn’t have even had Harley Quinn in this. But I guess DC just requires her to be in EVERYTHING now….
Agreed. Dc glazes Harley constantly. The series should have stuck to Batman villains introduced before 1950. (Ie Hugo Strange, Mad Monk, Dr Death, etc)
Honestly i dont dislike her in this but she should have just been her own orginal character because this one holds 0 similarities and Harleys already got a perfectly fine shtick
above all they change she character a lot to go from a girl madly obsessed and in love with Joker to a rip-off of Deadpool
@@toonboy2041 I would say the same thing about Joker.
@@snowbunnie1113 When Caped Crusader was announced as it's own thing. I expected those villains to appear with Hugo Strange being the greater scope villain.
I think it’s a little hypocritical to say the race swapping of the Gordon’s isn’t a problem but frame it as a detriment when talking about firebug, I think the point of that character and why they didn’t make him firefly is the fact that the character was supposed to be some weird nobody that no one’s heard of, he’s not even good enough to be firefly to me that’s what I thought the point was
And yeah he’s far removed from what firebug was in the comics but like you said it’s a new take
Yeah, that was weird and hypocritical. Basically he said that white characters can be race swapped, but don’t ever touch black characters. It should either all be okay, or none of it should.
Yeah I found that part weird too specially since he went on that whole rant about not having a problem with the race swaps, I don't think he genuinely has a problem with him being white but still weird
@@snowbunnie1113 Yeah personally I think all of it is for the worse and doesn’t equate at all to real representation but if you’re gonna take a stance for race swapping you should apply it evenly across the board
raceswapping well known characters thatre white into black has always been a cheap way by people who cant write characters good or make good original characters that happen to have different skin colors and an easy way to look diverse without actaully putting effort into making the characters diverse in their development, its surface level brownie points is what it is
batspecter said a misguided tangent about just people annoyed by raceswapping rather than getting to the actual root of why its so arbitrary and insincere while also still complaining aout raceswapping himself but in the "bad" version
i mean come on
Okay I do have a few notes actually.
Timm mentioned he changed the original Nocturna plot because he watched Let Me In and was inspired by that.
Caped Crusader is certainly no X-Men 97.
That's a fact.
The people who cry and whine those words are slowly being phased out as people just mature and see things more critically. hopefully.
10:00 I get what your saying but it’s completely counterintuitive when race swapping gender swapping type of stuff is just done for the purpose of ticking a box cuz it feels completely insincere.
16:59 so glad you included batman's mentor in this
it wouldn’t be complete if i didn’t
It’s weird how the LEGO Batman Movie (A parody of Batman movies) does a better job at understanding who Batman is more then the Caped Crusader (An actual Batman series).
5:03, Considering how Ed Brubaker had a hand in this show and he also wrote the Gotham Central book, which focused on the GCPD trying to do stuff without Batman, I'm honestly not surprised.
Fun fact! Deadshot actually appears in episode 5 but he's the guy that failed to shoot Gordon and then was never seen again lol
@@Wince_Media For a guy that goes by 'World's most deadliest marksman' he sure fails to do his job a lot.
She was a Batman's villain in the Batman '66 show and the only aspects of her character that we get from that show are that:
- she is the leader of a gang (like many Batman '66 villains)
- she is a friend of the Penguin
- she loves to eat lasagna
They could have just used her in Penguin's place and this way they could have:
- had a strong woman as Gotham's biggest crime boss
- avoided all the vitriol from the people that despise the gender-swaps
- added Lola all the new aspects that this version of Penguin has like the love for cabaret, instead of replacing many of Oswald's real interests, since as i pointed out Lola can only benefit from obtaining more traits
- used her as a trampoline for the introduction of the Penguin in a future season (after all they are friends so it makes sense that she could ask him for help).
it´s a character swap not a race swap
@Jasonwithadot
If you're referring to Firebug it is a race swap.
Even if the character has so many similarities to Firefly as you can see even in the clip in this video he is Firebug and Rigger (the first and most famous Firebug in the comics) is african american.
My problems with Caped Crusader:
Batman: Why is he a dick to Alfred?
I have never gotten that vibe from either Firefly or Firebug
Harley Quinn: Why weren’t you Hugo Strange? The story even fits his character better
Catwoman: Why was she an idiot?
@GokhanAras-pj1mm Thank you; I was unaware about Nocturna
Calling people who have a problem with the race swaps “people who lose sleep over seeing minorities in your super hero cartoon” is a little disingenuous. That’s not the reason why they have a problem with the race swaps and calling them “bigots” or “anti-woke grifters” for criticizing the show doesn’t invite room for discussion. You are just silencing and dehumanizing anyone who disagrees with you and your opinion. There are probably a lot of normal people who aren’t bigots or anti woke grifters who don’t like the race swaps or other aspects “woke” aspects of the show.
I love the fact that you said you don't care about Barbara and gordon race swapped but complains about fitebug being race swapped 😂😂😂
NOT J.J ABRAMS NOOOOO 1:38
I don’t like the reason they had for gender bending penguin being that Batman didn’t have a lot of female villains which isn’t all that true. They could’ve easily showcased one of Batman’s less well known female rogues. I think other channels have talked about this.
Yeah, but then you know how people get when you have "too many" obscure villain. Look at how they treated Beware the Batman.
@ I’m not even talking about loads of obscure villains. I’m talking about just one or two. I’m sure there are villains not yet brought to screen who have potential for interesting stories in this continuity including from golden age.
6:22 My thoughts exactly. I guess I wasn't the only one thinking Batman was a) an asshole and b) a secondary character in his own show.
Let’s just give Two-Face a cold gun.”
Again, I ain’t trying to say that Penguin being a woman is a plot to end masculinity. Just seems kinda lazy to me from a creative standpoint.
I honestly fell asleep watching this.
Plus I am kinda tired of seeing Batman being in his early years of his career as the masked vigilante (again)
The only show that tried something new and different enough was Batman Beyond and even then for a show that came out in the late 90's it still shows some real life issues that can be adressed during these times we live in.
Clayface was a killer in the show.
Now imo Onomatopoeia would work amazingly for a spiderverse style movie
I think the issue is that its been years since the last major batman show and what do we get? A worse btas repeating the same ol character of batman learning to be better? Id rather we just get a batfamily cartoon already
I rather see a Flash cartoon. I am sick of Batman getting more bloody cartoons! At least Creature commandos was a breath of fresh air.
@@tayojones9460A flash cartoon could be pretty cool. Although I'd set in the TT 03 and The Batman 2004 universes for a GA reach.
The batman strange days animated shorts felt more like a proper adaptation of golden age Batman.
I hadn't even heard of this series until now, but if they were going with a 40s theme why add in more recent villain's, sure Harley Quinn is well known, but she first appeared in the 90s, why not show off some of his old villain's that wouldn't make sense in the modern day like the Penny Plunderer?
That's a good point.
I've watched this show back when it released and forgot about it in a week. I got shocked when you mentioned Barbara, honestly I don't even remember her being there. Also firefly not being firefly is crazy
"BAT YOU'RE 20, STOP ACTING LIKE YOU'RE 67!".
Hit me right in the heart.
Yeah, you dont care about Thhe Penguin being a woman, but you would flip your shit if a male character casualy wore makeup never mentioned in plot or if it was a male version of Wonder Woman in skimpy clothing
Stop it with the simping, will ya
Thank you for telling the truth dude.
Caped crusader was clearly made by ppl who didn’t care and it’s truly insulting imo as a fan of the golden age earth two Bruce Wayne that this bore was what we got. Absolutely no versatility for those old comics, without the history & heart behind them.
Until I get my dream earth two style Batman show, I’m happy we at least have the brave and the bold.
Yeah, they should have really leaned into golden age era style to make this show stand out, instead it feels like they are trying to make btas again.
I wouldn't say they didn't care. But someone like Paul Dini definitely should have been there to help them execute their ideas much more effectively.
Something that could have been really good now is just pretty mediocre.
@@NightRunner2099 I don't know if Paul Dini would've been much help. He and Alan Burnett did some B:TAS comics recently and they were kinda boring.
Fr lmfao
Even now I can tell those folks are piling onto this video and it's a shame.
I FUCKING hate the "Batman just appears and beats people up and leaves". How to ruin a character. Seriously Bruce Timm you created the other so well known and historical animated series but now you're falling down losing any charm.
Timm was not the sole creator of BTAS! There were others who contributed more to the series!!!
I loved the GodzillaMendoza shoutout, it was really funny and completely relevant to the discussion. Keep up the good work!
Keep posting more man, great work 🎉
HOLY SHIT
My favourite Bat-Tuber ❤
Not shocked at all at the mediocrity. Simple pattern recognition with the mild wokeness. I know ya say you don’t care, but these are directly correlated and often even causal. No grift here, and no bigotry. I am the minority these people try to appeal to.
Great video love this channel can't wait for the next video
An Arkham Shadow video sounds lovely uwu
10:40 THANK YOU!!!!! I'm subscribing cuz I'm sick of seeing comic book channels complain about that
He seems to assume that anyone who has an issue with race swapping is a racist. Not everyone is a racist and his assumption is kinda simple minded and make him out as a gatekeeper.
ok say what you will about this show but you cannot deny that this show did some really cool and original shit with its villains
The "That's okay, you can keep it" clip was DIABOLICAL 🤣First video I've seen of yours, good shit, bro!
If it was really the Golden Age, Alfred would be called Beagle.
Loving the MIB animated series soundtrack in the background. Also, The 2004 Batman series is the GOAT!
Love seeing this guy in my feed and thinking “who is this?” Clicking the video and thinking “oh yeah Godzilla mandoza but Batman instead of spider man”
Love your stuff keep making videos
What would have worked better if Bruce didn’t say anything and had this look of pure determination and sadness as Alfred looks on horrified.
you really should make an arkham shadow video that game was so good
Hi Batspector, love the videos 😄
@Hi_Just_Fred nonononononononononononono.
@@kendi5391 I know of electro's girlfriend but I don't know bout this lad Ock. I guess they might have took some inspiration for Olivia Octavius.

I agree with everything you said. I’m really hoping the second season steps it up, especially in the visuals.
You're being to kind. This show sucked. A batman that can't really fight can't really do detective work and the problems go on and on. Cucked crusader more like.
Yeah it sucks
Please give me the definition of the word “cuck”
Cause I think you don’t know what it actually means
You aren’t the first, nor the last, who will/have gone through that (I even had a stint when I was young, and raised by a mother with misandrist tendencies, which cause me to get swept into that crowd for a bit, but eventually had the “wait, this crowd is awful, and is literally just gassing themselves up over practically nothing, and are just trying to make the world stagnate and hateful, and my trauma doesn’t reflect the world, like these groups say.)
You are out of the crowd, and already know what people they are. You aren’t those people. You are much better, and again, have no need to be forgiven, as you already long since learned and changed ❤️. I hope you are proud of yourself, and know, if nothing else, I am proud of you, as I’m sure many others are!!
@@abaddungeonmaster7622 Thank you. I just hope people like GodzilleMendoza can forgive me.
Bro finally uploaded
Remember when the police force made a Anti Batman task force, and then that never shows up for the rest of the season... Wonder what happened to that.
Nah nah you fooling, this show is good, each episode should be longer and msube a two parter but overall the story is good abd theres an overarching arc fot Bruce

why not to avoid being the channel to complain all the time say something positive about superman and how he's better in an April fools video
Making a Batman show mid should be a crime. Well not really but it's quite the shame.
I really loved the show. I thought the Batman itself was a very good adaption and something familiar yet different at the same time all while giving worlds greatest detective.
this is what happens when you make a show for streaming tv/services.
10:00 Media discourse is in a really terrible place currently and my happiness at hearing this rant just illustrated that clearly for me. This speech is the kind of thing that would get me to subscribe if the previous content hadn't already.
The show just doesn't commit on anything.
Aside of the lack of direction; Everything that they propose something, they would backpedal in some way.
automotopia would work great in atom west batman
