As a Nigerian, I can confirm this sadly. A lot of people parrot what they hear their pastors, teachers and parents say without bothering to seek out their own opinions. And even then they get ostracised if they do so overall there isn't much to gain long term from not being religous there.

I’m Nigerian, and most of my relations and familiars do believe in the Christian god.
The ignorance never ceases from the motherland.
What makes matters worse is how religions like Christianity, Islam, and Judaism aren’t even native to most, if not all African nations.
They are simply foreign and new religions stemmed from old Europe, and most originally from the Middle East.

People are trying to define the almighty. You can’t define the unlimited nature. If you try to define it, it is not unlimited it is limited. That is the human being, it is a limited existence. The almighty is the unlimited existence meaning it cannot be defined. Almighty is not defined by boundaries, he will
      Never be defined.

All of these people are naive, ignorant and very culturally biased.
The question in itself is complex. To every person, the word 'God' has different connotations and meanings hence why we have different religions. For someone to not believe God exists is not a sin nor a crime and they definitely do not deserve to be called a 'Bastard'!
Durkheim (a Sociologist) argues that people are religious and believe in God because it gives the individual a sense of belonging and prevents us from losing our sense of meaning and gives us a guidance on how to live life (this is where Holy books such as the Qur'an and the Bible comes in) and religion also gives us a better understanding of the world.
I believe the more educated someone is, the less religious they are which has been proven through research. I personally don't want to state my views on whether I believe in God or not but I'd advise BattaBox to be more selective of their sample to get a wider range of findings. For example interviewing Nigerians who have lived abroad, Nigerians who are very educated and Nigerians who are also from a high class. I can guarantee the answers you will get from these people will differ from the respondents you have selected. Although I guess the method of random sampling was utilized, ironically every respondent yet seems to be ignorant
P.S does anyone ever question why we hang up pictures of white Jesus (from the location he was born in he's likely to have been very tanned/brown) or question the fact that Nigerians wouldn't have found 'Christianity' if not because the white missionaries introduced it to y'all. Oh and the books in the Bible was also put together and carefully selected by the white man to serve their interests when it comes to controlling the masses, ever wondered why white people are not as religion fanatics as the blacks. But that's none of my business :)
Another point I'd like to address. The media is soo soo powerful and influential in this generation. Really and truly all these pastors and spiritualists who perform all these 'miracles' in the name of God and air it on T.V etc, do we not think that if this was all legit the media would have got grasp of the 'power of healing in the name of God' and raised mass awareness on it which would it lead to saving massive costs in terms of healthcare etc? But nah.. we never think to question that deeply

Victoria Olamide this is a great comment, I loved reading it and I agree with you on most parts - only thing I disagree about, wasn't even necessarily your own opinion as I understood it - so I will move on to my opinion about why religion is now so deeply rooted in communitys of coloured people..
Partly it's a bit of Stocholm Syndrome
      - and then there's a lot of reasons you have in fact stated earlier yourself, socioeconomic is certainly a reason - and if people are getting treated like shit, it becomes this coping mechanism if they believe in an eternal afterlife..
You see the same thing in India where those who believe in reincarnation, if you are born into a lower social class, you probably did something bad in an earlier life..
And yes, it is funny how the idea of jesus being this white dude in a world where almost everybody where at least dark tanned has been standardized - but as you might be aware of, early christianity was very much about adaptation, so much that it leaves us with a very interesting question today - did he even exist?!
Or is christianity simply a mix of different religions - perhaps mixed with a historical figure, perhaps a zealot jew who was executed by Romans...
What we do know is that early christianity first grew strong among the poor, the women's, the slaves and the uneducated, (same goes for early islam) - and today missionaries are targeting some of the same groups, today's slaves are those with very low income and poor social status - wich I'm afraid you will find a lot of not only in Lagos, but throughout the African continent...
      ---
I sincerely hope that one day we will be able to establish some basic global rights for children - one of them should be access to cost free education and another should be the freedom of religious indoctrination - and the list goes on! ;-)

You just have to watch CNN to see how every single deity is failing Africans orphaned by conflict or ravaged by war. If you don't have Cable TV, go and ask at NTA how many believers have been bombed and kidnapped by Boko Haram despite prayers and fasting.
This is New Years Eve and like every other year, the Pope and all pastors and Imams all over the world would pray for world peace- This merciful God will also like every year, answer no and delight in the death of children just as his predecessors like Ifa, Saturn, Eirene, Athena and Mars consistently disappointed human-kind. Why can't anyone connect the dots? Maybe we just gather to dress up and spit on ourselves!
The cure of Ebola and malaria are in labs, not on Lagos-Ibadan expressway. The solution to religious fanaticism is simply pointing to the ample proof that the books they quote to kill and judge one another are light on facts The solution to burning witches or slapping "Winshe for Jesus" is simply showing that like Leprechauns, such beings don't exist.

egglot12 god is not human. He is a power that is too unlimited for that kind of definition. Logic cannot desrcribe him because he isn’t describable. He is beyond our logical comprehension and for good reason. IWhat we need to focus is on why the universe is created and why we are created. Instead of listening to religion or claiming to be aethiest or trying to prove existence through equations, take a look at our own body and mind and fundamentals of the universe. For something to exists, something must have caused it. As a human being, did you create yourself? If you did then you must be something that is not human, but according to logic you are human. You obviously needed your parents to create you, because they had sex and their effect of that sex was you. In the same way, this universe didn’t create itself, the Big Bang did, well what caused the Big Bang. That is the biggest question science cannot understand because science itself has reached its limit at this point of time. So now that science can’t prove what caused the Big Bang do we just suddenly worship the Big Bang? If you are an aeithist than yes you can worship it if you want, but if you are reasonable then you would know the Big Bang is just a phenomena to make the universe happen. So what caused the Big Bang? If you are a cold ruthless scientific machine you say the Big Bang causes it’s self which is contradictory to the laws of the universe. Something can’t cause itself, only an effect can make a cause happen. Effect leads to cause and cause leads to effect. Effect can’t be effect and cause doesn’t lead to cause. So something must have made the Big Bang which is the effect, so what is the cause?

What you have in Nigeria is a brainwashed populace that submit to the will of their pastors no matter what is demanded of them. There is a huge problem in the Nigerian communities in the UK (and logically it's much worse in Nigeria itself) where pastors essentially regard the community as their own personal harem.
Young girls are abused in their droves but are too afraid or ashamed to report their abusers for fear of the backlash within their communities, and those outside are afraid to act for fear of appearing culturally or racially insensitive.

"I don't know if God believes in me!" is my first reply. - It's, because how can anyone believe in the God of any man-made religion? For, most of them end up in the opposite of what we expect of them.
That's why I believe in my own God and that is the divine "Power of the Universe"... or simply put: in nature and its laws! To me that makes sense, because acting logically correct always got me the results I was after. That frees me of turning into a religious sheep, forced to obey those self-imposed holy shepherds. I don't need them to teach me right from wrong.

In your country it's life threatening to tell anyone what you really think.
I prefer freedom of thought and speech and truly believe that nature and its laws are God, because nobody really knows a thing about the miracles of the Universe than you and me.
Nature's justice is watching and dealing with us: Acting logically correct and our life will be good; acting negatively compels us to compensate our actions. That's all we need to know and obey in life and that's why I don't need religions to tell me what I have to think and believe. That's a personal choice, just like the color of my underpants...

2:10 this guy said they are not human-being lmao , anyway...
How you learn to view the world is called culture. That is what makes humans so interesting is because of the different upbringing and beliefs. And over time these things can change. Identity is a process. I have come across Nigerians who say they are full blown Christians or Muslims yet they still have animist beliefs. The belief in a higher power is interpreted in many different ways across the globe. Who says that one version is correct. It's like rivers that all lead to one body, the ocean. Some people say they don't belief in God (higher power), yet they believe in science or nature (what they see), but at the end of the day isn't God the All Seer, All Know-er, God is here and everywhere at the same time. Someone people may say at the end of the day all of these things are the same. There are Shamanists who believe in the Sun, Moon, Rain and Earth gods etc...Hindus believes are not too far from this. To not believe is to believe lol. Just like communication people think that when you speak that is communication but forgetting that when you don't speak is nonverbal communication which is still a form of communication. Not to believe is till believing in something. :-p It just may not be what the majority sees fit in belief.

The more a country is religious, the more that country is poor and the less they respect human rights. That's a fact.
Christianity has been very functional into keeping poor people quiet in their place, because it is a religion that glorify poverty and suffering and promise a reward, a magical place you will go but only afther you die; so that the poor will accept to live in misery instead of rebelling and kicking the rich people in the ass.

Any religion can be used to brainwash people; christianity is the usual example because is the biggest one. Even extremist political ideologies works the same...in fact they are like religions of their own.
I do not even think that all adout christianity is bad. I belive Jesus wasnt inventing anything, he was just talking about what is good in the human nature, like Buddha or Krishna before him. The problem is that many people are not clever enough to understand phylosophy, but they are functional enough to understand rules.

Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
      Romans 1:22‭-‬25 KJV
      bible.com/1/rom.1.22-25.KJV
Yes, they knew God, but they wouldn’t worship him as God or even give him thanks. And they began to think up foolish ideas of what God was like. As a result, their minds became dark and confused. Claiming to be wise, they instead became utter fools. And instead of worshiping the glorious, ever-living God, they worshiped idols made to look like mere people and birds and animals and reptiles. So God abandoned them to do whatever shameful things their hearts desired. As a result, they did vile and degrading things with each other’s bodies. They traded the truth about God for a lie. So they worshiped and served the things God created instead of the Creator himself, who is worthy of eternal praise! Amen.

This life is too short to be persecuting somone over what they do and do not believe in. In the end theres no defenitive proof of how our qorld came to be and if their's and afterlife, so live your life by whatever morals you want, but that doesn't give you the right to force thise ideals on someone else and/or demean them for it.

But I tell you, Elijah has already come, but he wasn’t recognized, and they chose to abuse him. And in the same way they will also make the Son of Man suffer.” Then the disciples realized he was talking about John the Baptist.

And you will go free, leaping with joy like calves let out to pasture. On the day when I act, you will tread upon the wicked as if they were dust under your feet,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. “Remember to obey the Law of Moses, my servant-all the decrees and regulations that I gave him on Mount Sinai for all Israel. “Look, I am sending you the prophet Elijah before the great and dreadful day of the Lord arrives. His preaching will turn the hearts of fathers to their children, and the hearts of children to their fathers. Otherwise I will come and strike the land with a curse.”

These people are just so oppressed by there own cultural theology way of thinking but I blame no. I think the more you think out of the box the more innovated we become as a species. The more knowledge in the world the more we uncover the mysteries of the unknown. I think through the ways of science and philosophy the more we will continue to uncover this vast universe. We cannot keep oppressing our minds in the mindset that if we don't understand something or an event we used God as an answer. Before some goes irate this my opinion in all of this. I'm an agnostic I don't believe our definition of god its at it right definition I mean do we really understand what orchestrated this vast universe . We center ourselves as too much as being supreme as if we are the chosen one's and the so called god cares about human beings. This universe is so vast and violent in nature that I can't seem to phantom we are the center in this so called god’s mind. We have to continue opening our minds and stop creating unproven god beliefs and its oppression. There is a way to live life with good morals and ideals. Man created religion to live life at its own moral standard that some oppresses the mind when its leads to questions outside of its own realm. There is good and bad in every religion but i think its more of just living through ethics, morals, and philosophy created my human thought. I say if you have the freedom to live life with the opportunities you have live life by your own means through happiness, good moral righteousness, and open minded. This universe is full of mysteries and with our natural ability through the process of nature's evolution in life that lead us here let us continue to grow in the mind and continue to unravel the mysteries of curiosity of our environment and this vast universe. Thank you... Peace and happiness to all.

    John 1:9-11
Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house or give him any greeting, for whoever greets him takes part in his wicked works.

I believe God is a spirit of eternity. Why? Because this is what God is and what he offers to all if we are willing to believe this and except. If there be no God, then there be no life, no love, there be nothing. Us even being here is proof that there is a God, a greater power that is in control of all. We don't just have body and mind but also have soul and spirit. There are 2 God's in this world. God of life and of love and God of death and hate. The God of life is greater than the one of death and hate because God created all even the devil, Satan. God is love or devil would have been put under his feet when he tricked and deceived man and thrown into hells fire. None can see air, yet we know it to be. Not because we can see it or taste it, but because we can feel air, we can hear air, can even smell it, it keeps us alive. What more proof you need than being alive???

+Shawna Giguere , So why would God be stupid enough to create a devil, who presumably is responsible for the rape and impregnation of children captured by Boko Haram and ISIS in full view of this God who is enjoying the whole spectacle, and doing absolutely nothing about. This God of yours has already seen hundreds of Girls and Women forcibly detonated as suicide bombers by Boko Haram, and is enjoying the explosions as s/he is completely powerless to do anything about it.Please enlighten me, what is the difference between God and Devil? Are they not one and the same? Otherwise, neither exist, and you are severely delusional!

AFRICA will have the last laugh on this planet, mark my words, Alpha and Omega of mankind. If there's one thing Africans got right its faith and connection to the creator. That is all you need in this temporal existence, forget cash, forget cars, forget jewellery, etc. Its the connection to the source of the heavens who is above this playground of the two worlds. If there's any people on this planet who have witnessed the work of the Almighty for thousands of years, its the original inhabitants of this planet (AFRICANS)

I don't think it is sin to not believe in God, however, I think it is foolish. There are lots of reasons why people don't believe in God like personal bad experiences, upbringing, dogma, etc. There are just too many issues with Atheism which atheists generally do not seem to consider such as no ultimate meaning/purpose in life, a lack of an objective moral basis and the origin of life problem, among others. If all this world is is simply a bunch of chemicals reacting with each other, there simply is no right and wrong; "Murder is just one bag of chemicals impacting another bag of chemicals" - Dr. Jonathan Safarti. You could come up with your own subjective standard for morality but this of course means that you cannot judge another person's actions as right or wrong seeing as they would have a different standard from you. Atheists have also failed to tell us how it is possible that everything came out of nothing or how life came from non-life. It's interesting, Atheists will not believe that their honda civic came about by a random explosion in honda's assembly factory, but they will believe that the ENTIRE universe came about by an explosion of nothing... because you know, a honda civic is just waaaay more complicated than the whole universe.
Like I always say, anyone who is interested in finding the true creator of the universe should just humble themselves and ask Him to reveal himself to them. If God is real, then He isn't just a great theological/philosophical idea... he is a God that can interact with His creations and is able to show Himself. I have personally seen God do amazing and undeniable (and somewhat unbelievable) things in my life, if anyone is sincerely interested in finding out whether or not God exists, just ask, "Creator of the universe, if you are real, show yourself to me!"
"God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble" - James 4:6.
By the way, not all scientists are atheists as many of the commenters and people in the vid seem to think. In fact, an organization that hires one of the largest number of phd scientists in the world is a group called creation ministries... need I say more?

+ricardomaman I take it you are not at all a scientist, or maybe Nigeria trained, as your opinions are not at all worth debating.
For one, the Big Bang is a hypothesis and not a theory. Secondly, the hypothesis itself does not record events at time t=0. And thirdly, the hypothesis has never stated that the universe emerged out of nothing. What you need to do is stop repeating nonsense you have heard from others and go and learn about things yourself. That's if you can ever understand them, which I very much doubt given what you have regurgitated. Finally, please ask yourself why this silly God of yours has not interacted with his creations in order to release all the girls and women kidnapped, molested and raped by Boko Haram and Daesh, to the point that a lot of them are now pregnant. That is the ones, they have not detonated as suicide bombers. All this in full view of this God of yours! This really nonsensical God just interacts with deluded minds, and not with critical events taking place on the ground. You should learn to decode pure and absolute nonsense passed down by your forbears, and not swallow rubbish hook, line and sinker. It's even worse regurgitating swallowed rubbish!

Oh I believe in God and I believe in us, we will become beautifully connected again remembering who we are and where we came from.
