if you line up the history of how funakoshi learn toudi, it was began when kushanku taught kungfu to 2 people, sakukawa kanga and chatanyara. Sakukawa becomes sokon matsumura teacher.
kushanku real name ks kwang shang fu, he taught chuan fa kungfu, or shaolin chuan kungfu to sakukawa and chatanyara. However, chatanyara is more fluent in learning the knowledge from kwang than sakukawa. This also led why sakukawa katas are a bit mismatch with kungfu as their predecessor.
Thus, the simplification of toudi curriculum by itosu, by eradicating many throws, joint locks, and trapping just like in kungfu before, brcomes only focuses in kick and punvh also led the forming the JKA curriculum now
pay attention that chief instructor of JKA, naka tatsuya have been learning trapping, joint locks, and throw as bunkai of katas from other style, mostly from uechi ryu/pangainoon, not from JKA itself
