      The funny thing is at my last semester of college back in the 1980s we played a complete scratch home brew RPG system where the core rules were able to fit on two pages of A4 paper. It was lightweight, fast to play, and most importantly as flexible as the "Narrator" and players wanted to be. The only thing it required was imagination of the participants, character sheets to write down player skills and biographical data, and some D6 dice.

      Baldur's Gate is not an AI directed game, so kinda unrelated. It is an on rails experience with multiple braching pre determined paths made by actual people.
      If the AI usage for tabletop is an anathema to you as well, then welcome to the club I guess.
      Assisted Design ( AD for short ) as in using software to help desing dunegons or maps has still nothing to do with AI unless the soft itself uses some form of AI or machine learning. I use Dungeondraft, Wonderdraft, Excel, Word and a bloody notebook. So, still everything I do is made by me.
      I just detest this forced push towards digital stuff and AI in this hobby. It can only make it worse IMHO. VTT is more than enough for me thank you very much. And my version of VTT is an internet whiteboard, lol. So even with VTT I avoid wotc/hasbro solutions like the plague they are.

However, there will always be a desire among a segment of players (and not a constant segment, but the population will shift over time as interests change) to use a human DM and actual original plot development. What AI will put a dent in are DMs who are extremely low-maintenance and low-story or low-roleplay.

    The ignorance that these buisiness people have about AI is astounding, and sales people are taking massive advantage of that. These learning algorithms, as they currently are, are already plateauing. That means they're as good as they're gonna get, massive warts and all, and no amount of additional data can push it past that limit. The only thing you can do is get a more powerful (and more expensive) server setup to run the thing, and even then it will reach a slightly higher plateau that it simply cannot improve past. So all these buisinesses considering or implenting AI in the hopes that it will "get better" and pay off their investment are being sold a lie. There is no further improvement for AI outside of direct human intervention and editing, in which case it's cheaper to just hire humans from the very begining and avoid the running costs of the AI as well as the additional time wasted in getting humans to check for and fix its mistakes.
    Then on the customer side there are massive flaws as well. Let's put aside for a moment the memory issues and other obvious flaws of both text and image output AIs. For DnD, AI DMs cannot help resolve player conflict, nor can they be "creative" with problems and solutions because they're just algorithms that have to pull from their data pile and thus concoct a perfectly mathematical average of the data there. In addition to this, when you interact with an AI, you have to do so with authority as the user or else it will loop and languish in its perfectly average zone of outputs, refusing to progress any story on its own. But having authority over the "DM" is not how a player is supposed to interact with DnD! The DM is supposed to be able to say "No", for both story reasons, behavioural reasons, fairness to the other players and management of player expectations, and if the player disagrees then they must work out a solution between each other. But AIs are made to be used and follow orders, so the Players can easily break it and make it do whatever they want, which basically would turn any campaign into Creative Mode, which means that while there would be some initial novelty it will inevitably become boring as said novelty wears off (much like AI themselves).
    I don't think that AI DMs are feasible. They can be implemented, sure, but they won't be worth the cost vs the mediocre service and game experience they provide compared to a human DM. What is most likely to happen, I think, is that it will be implemented and pushed, but the majority of players will hate or simply not use it. So either WotC/Hasbro will be smart and cut their lisses early (unlikely) or try monetizing it harder to the remaining players still trying to use the AI features (as well as the rest of 5.5/ONE/2034) in an attempt to keep up with opperating costs and potential improvements to the AI (which aren't mechanically or technically or monetarily feasible).
    Overall, it's a horrible, ignorant, naive idea. They've invested poorly are are about to reap the detriments for it.

    The funny part to me about trying to use AI for ang creative work is that work immediately becomes freely shareable. AI creatrd works cannot be copyrighted. Only humans can have copyright (thank you animal based cases).
    On a different note, im kind of glad j stopped supporting Hasbro a long time ago.

    • @RobertStoll
      @RobertStoll วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      Thing about D&D is that it's (mostly) sharable. You can't copyright a series of freely craftable and modifiable rules. You can't copyright the concept of an elf or an axe. You can't copyright dice.
      All Hasbro has, in essence, is a trademark name, visual assets, and interchangable written/visual assets (that could easily be interchanged parts you didn't pay them for.)
      One can see how they're a little desperate then to establish their own designer line of addictive digital "medicine."

    • @RobertStoll
      @RobertStoll วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Only reason why ANY tabletop system succeeds is either A) They're a board game and you physically buy a printed/manufactured product, B) you lisence a digital software similar to A (only you don't own it,) and/or C) you've cultivated enough of a player community that are willing to give you money for what you've made despite it being largely superfluous to the concept of a roleplaying experience that any group can have around a table top.
      Hasbro burned C hard, and is now trying to convince everyone that their B isn't just a voluntary third wheel in the situation.

    I guess they are quite confident that the monitization of the players through D&DBeyond will work. No matter, I haven't played D&D since the early 2000's. I have play many TTRPG's, just not D&D. Lots of choices out there more than ever.

The 3 of us that DM use technology (Word/Excel/printers) to create our adventures but none of us have any interest/use in an online service - especially one with a monthly fee. I use Box so I can access my files at home/work but keep offline copies because I don't trust any online service. We're not going to use VTT because we rotate where we play and none of us want to shell out the $$/time to learn it. We like pencil/paper/mega mat/miniatures/dice when playing and causing the DM a heart attack when the party does something unexpected - or REALLY stupid. Hasbro/Wizards isn't offering anything any of us want/need with the 2024 edition. Eventually one of us (probably me) will acquire a copy of the player info and we'll pick and choose what to update our games with and what to ignore.
