Very interesting interview. I saw Bill Haley in person on two occasions. I saw him at the Montreal Forum when he headlined a major rock and roll show in 1956. Then I saw him at the Esquire Showbar also in Montreal in the late 60's....and in that performance I believe one of his sons played in his band. Maybe someone can confirm which son that was. Bill Haley was truly the first artist to form a rock and roll band and record rock and roll songs of few of which became top ten hits along with one of the biggest selling songs in the history of recorded music and that was Rock Around the Clock.......then in mid 1955 Chuck Berry came along with Maybellene, then in early 1956 Carl Perkins hit with Blue Suede Shoes, then Elvis with Heartbreak Hotel and then Little Richard with Tuttie Frutti and the rest is history, but Bill Haley was the first big rock and roll act and that's a fact.......

BH Jr. surely comes across as a very honest and likable gentleman - I wish him and the rest of the Haley family all the best - I gotta get his book. I know a lot of the Haley story from John Swensons biography, and his son's words provide even more interesting things about this fascinating and tragic music legend. He definitely deserves much more credit as a very important initiator of the whole rock era. Since 1976 I've been a fan of BH and his fabulous Comets (specially sax player Rudy Pompilli and his awesome guitarists Johnny Kay, Frannie Beecher, Bill Turner and Nick Nastos). I saw BH live in concert here in Copenhagen Denmark in November 1979. Although musically average, with Rudy sadly missing and Haley doing a routine job with much younger hired guns, I still recall the overall magic of his music. A lot of his albums - such as Live at the Bitter End, Live in London 74, Rock around the Country, Just RnR, and his last outing Everyone can RnR, are all highly recommendable even today - and they will stand forever.
Just bought the book on audible. Listened to 9 chapters so far. Must've glossed over the fact that Haley Jr. Wrote it. Always skip the prologue. No wonder its so interesting and well written
Bill Haley, Sr. was one of the few country(or hillbilly, is it was once known)artists to successfully merge that music with other forms.The short list includes Elvis,Ray Charles and Willie Nelson.
I saw BH Jr and the Comets last night in Marshal, TX and I highly recommend you see them in person if you can. His voice is very close to his father's. The songs are done professionally and the band members are all top musicians. The online videos do not do justice to how well the band looks, performs, and sounds in person. Admittedly the audience to this special event was mostly over 65, but this is an entertaining and clean musical event that any adult could take their parents to, or any grandparents could take their grandchildren too. They put on a first class show. Ringo would do well to have this band open at his All Star shows. They have the original 50's rock and roll magic!
This book is really about his second wife, Joan Barbara ‘Cuppy’ Cupchak and her family. She is the primary focus of this book. She is the only person is this book who comes out of this story with any credit at all. She is the only personality who is sufficiently mined and examined in deep psychological terms. She is the only person we get to really know in this tome. She is the real tragic heroine on this book. This book needed an independent author/historian/researcher to do the subject justice. More people should have been interviewed, more research was needed and more context and clarifications where required. The core story runs to 279 pages and, at that length, it feels unfinished. This book should have spanned at least 700 pages, in order to fully examine all angles. Fans are not interested in Haley’s Jr’s medical problems anyway, this is supposed to be a Haley Sr biography isn’t it? Haley’s Jr’s medical history should have been kept to his personal website, not plastered all over his father’s biography. His family memoir - yes. His dad’s biography - no. You see? Selling 75 million records, with four Top 40 hits to his credit, Haley is seen by many as the man who lit the blue touch paper to a musical revolution ..A biography should surely provide clear and concrete answers.
I dislike this type of interview, fami!y business is private & very personal. After reading the book I had the impression Bill jnr. had a very large chip on his shoulder.

He was a waiter at The Collegeville Inn. in Collegeville Pa. in the 1980's. when I was playing in a wedding band there!
