Bill Haley Life Story (1925 - 1981) Bill Haley And His Comets - "Rock Around The Clock" Bill Haley came along a lot earlier than most people realise and history usually acknowledges, and he went on making good music for years longer than is usually recognised. The central event in Haley's career was the single "Rock Around the Clock" topping the charts for eight weeks in the spring and summer of 1955, an event that most music historians identify as the dawn of the rock & roll era. Getting the song there, however, took more than a year, a period in which the band had already contributed a unique and essential service in the cause of bringing rock & roll into the world, with the million-selling single "Shake, Rattle and Roll" to their credit; Equally important, in the three years before that, Haley and his band had already broken new ground with the singles of "Rocket 88," "Rock the Joint," and "Crazy, Man, Crazy." Born in Highland Park, Michigan, in 1925, Haley was blind in one eye from birth, and, as a consequence, suffered from terrible shyness as a boy. Bill Haley's son is still keeping his father's music alive with Bill Haley Jr. & The Comets. They're all great musicians too. I remember hearing "Rock Around The Clock" on the American Graffiti soundtrack. I would play the song over and over, and became obsessed with the 50's. Eventually I had to move on and live in the present day, but the music influenced my guitar playing decades later.

When he passed away, I read a tribute which was entitled: “See You Later, Alligator - Bill Haley The Man Who Couldn’t Keep Up With The Pace He Set The Rest of the World”. How true! My favourites were ‘Skinny Minnie’, ‘R-O-C-K Rock’, and ‘Calling All Comets’. Thanks again for the video.

Contrary to a lot of musical experts it is my opinion that Bill was the first Rock Band. He burst onto the English scene circa 1954 and the kids went wild. We had all listened to trad Jazz before this and the first portable electric gramophones were available and we were all into Rock and Roll. When the film Rock around the Clock played there was riots in the cinemas and it was the start of a musical sub culture.The. rest of pop music was old fashioned and reject ed by the kids. We loved his music. We knew it as rock and roll and would use phrases such as see you later alligator when leaving friends for me he was the man who started it all but does not get the credit
A very good documentary, and quite accurate. Seriously, Bill Haley was so 'before everyone else', they didn't even have a name for the music they created--they wound up calling it "cowboy jive!" The name 'rock & roll' wasn't even in use back then!

when Haley toured Europe the kids went absolutely wild..it wasn`t controlled chaos like the later rock and roll acts...the shows were out of control and eventually some were cancelled because they were unmanageable..whatever anyone says about him and with all due respect to the R@B artist who invented it..he was the first true rocker

One has to admit that both the song and the movie "Rock around the clock" are an intrinsic part of Bill Haley's life. Without the song and the follow up movie, he would have been a forgotten figure today. The movie world came to know of him when Rock around the clock released in theatres in 1956. One must also keep in mind and agree that Rock around the clock was the biggest and most successful Rock 'N Roll film ever made, and the film owned half of its success to the gorgeous presence of Lisa Gaye and her superlative dancing. I do wish you had, in this upload, provided us more shots from behind the scenes of filming Rock around the clock, interviews with its stars: Johnnie Johnston, Lisa Gaye and Alix Talton recorded during the 50's; also some good rare screen shots of Lisa with Bill.

Due to a late ferry boat Bill Haley and the Comets only had three hours to record their first single. Milt Gabler was pushing "13 Women"" and took 2 1/2 hours. He told Bill he had half an hour to come up with a B-side. Bill did two takes for "Rock Around the Clock" 2 1/2 hours. Pressed for time he told Danny Cedrone to use the same solo as on "Rock the Joint". Cedrone was Haley's recording lead guitarist, but never a Comet. He would be pushed down some stairs by a mobster and died shortly afterwards. Haley refused to ever play "13 Women" live despite it be a good rocker. Bill ended up in Mexico where he was the king of Twist. Blackboard Jungle used RATC and that is what made it a hit.

@@Neil-Aspinall bill haley was around well before presley so maybe that's why he looked older. Because he was. But bill haley started rocknroll and presley followed.
Its incredible such a founding father and Titan of the birth of Rock and roll is so largely forgotten. His premature death at just 55, very ill with inoperable brain cancer and treating it with alcohol is very sad.
