    Beautiful restoration. It was a Godsend to shop restorers when Rust o leum came out with their hammertone line of paints. I have used it on countless restoration products such as toolboxes, and machines with great success like you had here. What i like the most is that particular paints ability to cover small flaws in the finish of what it is being applied to.

    I just bought the same one for $20.00 and it was rusty! Vary similar amount, but with the straight red powder rust on the base and table flats. No paint. Just black metal, so one job is already done. I see my pulleys are both upsidedown. Lol No wonder the belt clearance is so tight. You really gave me some great ideas on how to clean it up even more. Thank you vary much for the video. IMO it was just the right amount of useful info needed, without a bunch of unrelated ramblings you see in a lot of videos. 👍🖖

    Nice restoration! Many years ago I restored a neglected 1953 Atlas 9325 bench top drill press. I used distilled white vinegar to remove all of the rust. Everything came out looking like new. I kept the color as close as possible to the original. The motor was actually in very good shape and is dated pre WWII. The drill press runs like a dream. Once again, awesome job restoring it and giving it a new life.

    I've been wanting to pick up a drill press to add to my tool collection. Was looking at all the new stuff, but nothing is made in the US anymore and if it is, its priced way outside what I can justify for the few projects I'll ever use a drill press for. I just found one of these locally, its in rough shape, but the motor supposedly works and price is right. This just gave me the courage to go pick it up and restore it. Thanks!

    Thanks much Tom. inspirational video. I inherited several vintage tools including a drill press similar to your video. going to go slow in restoring, works for now. I really liked the fiber wheel you used but can't seem to find it on amazon. i have a 6" grinder and vintage 6" polishing setup. would you mind providing a link? have done little restoring (ie nubee) but why a fiber disc vs wire wheel?

      Hey thanks for the kind words. The wire wheel and fiber wheel both have there place depending on then project. The fiber wheel leaves a nicer finish on most materials but can’t get into certain spots. This is a good fiber wheel to start with. Great restoration Tom! You did a beautiful job with it.
    I noticed the 2 vintage thumb oiler cans near your workbench. Do you use them as oilers or are they just there for decoration? If you use them, what kind of oil do you put in them? I think I saw you had a plastic bottle of 3-in-1 oil too. I'm a big fan of Evaporust too!
    Can you share some of your video secrets? What kind of camera do you use? Are you running the camera while you're also doing the work? Do you have a mic clipped on? I ask because I'm interested in doing videos too. Keep up the great work!

    • @TomGunnTools
      @TomGunnTools  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Paul, I keep some 50/50 solution of acetone and Automatic transmission fluid in one and regular motor oil in the other oil can. As far as the videos I just use a regular iPhone and the iMovie software it comes with. I don’t use a mic but you can adjust the volume if you choose with the software when editing. I really just started making videos to share my projects and tool hauls with friends and family and discovered there is a lot of people with the same interest. You should give it a shot if you chose not much to it. I appreciate you watching!

What type of paint did you use? What type of clear coat? The name of the company that makes the paint and clear coat would be very helpful.

    • @TomGunnTools

      I’m assuming the motor is pushed all the way forward if so I had the same problem as I mentioned in the video. You may wanna buy a belt that’s an inch bigger then the one that’s on there so you have more room to adjust. For whatever reason some of the belts were really shoehorned on there which I can’t understand since the motor is made to slide out and put tension.

    This is NOT a true restoration. Once you start to add different paint colors that are NOT the original then what you have is a custom paint job, I do tool restorations so that they keep their true vintage value. This also means there are times when I do not paint or fully paint a tool if the overall surface paint does not warrant it.
