Worked at Carvana for 3 years: Most of what said here is pretty accurate. It's all about having the inventory. Whether profit is made is not necessarily the objective. However the cars offered to use as the user are based on your zipcode so its harder than you think actually buy (find) a car on the site in cali if you live on the east coast zipcode. Otherwise they charge you 300+ to ship it (however that is much cheaper than the going rate of +$1000 to move a car cross country. Additionally Carvana is driving the market higher, they actually give high values for cars and they don't require anything more than pics and docs

For sure. OK if you're moving from a late model economical ICE car to an EV and you only drive a few thousand miles per year, probably doesn't make sense bcuz EVs are somewhat higher impact to build than conventional ICE cars, but it is just _somewhat_ . EVs are also ~6x more efficient for each mile traveled vs ICEs fundamentally so if you put any sort of normal mileage on your ICE car, and/or drive a much older and dirtier ICE car, it's worth getting an EV environmentally. Plus even if you trade in a late model ICE to get an EV, that ICE is presumably replacing someone's older ICE and getting that off the road so there are still benefits down the line.

Have to agree with you about EVs. The world hasn't really dealt with the issue of E-Waste, we just dump our waste onto poor countries. But somehow the answer to the great challenge of global warming is to transform the automobile into a consumer electronic, and create more waste 🤷‍♂

Theoretically EVs should last much, much longer than ice cars. Far less moving parts and analog tech means increased durability. If we figure out battery replacement and recycling, no shot material waste is worse for EVs by any metric.

I dont know if there have been any cheap economy EVs in America or if theyd be of any use concidering the distances, but for a Metro Area car youll get a lot of luxury feeling from a cheap EV. Very little noise, no vibrations, quicker from a standstill to the speedlimit than any ICE car under 80 grand.
edit: make that 60 grand maybe, but an e-Golf will keep up with a Golf R up to 60 kmh.

The people who paid $50k over for a GT500 also paid $200k over for a house in LA in the 90's. They're getting screwed again. Not me, I had a few clean cars going into 2020, including a 2005 GTO that I bought new with just 34k miles (it's spotless) and I'm going to ride this out forever how long this takes. When the world wakes up from this nightmare, I'll buy something (I find the New Z car interesting, but I won't buy the first year of a new model, I can wait) new, maybe. I have no need to be the first on my block to have the latest greatest anything.

Stay away from extended warranties my dad had one for his 05 dually. It covered somethings but didn’t cover others. Plus most cars are 100,000mile don’t do anything except oil changes and maybe a serpentine belt but most people aren’t owning anything long enough to either out last the warranty or their trading in still owing on the last one and it’s transferred to the new car. Because they can’t afford to pay a mechanic or dealer to fix anything or don’t know how to. A window regulator from dodge is $350 before labor. Autozone $120.
