I typically hold the camera by hand. Using a mount is easy, but doesn't provide the "best" quality final production. When you mount the camera to the plane, the vibrations get transferred into the lens and you get a "jitter" in the footage. Holding the camera eliminates that. I do travel with a mount though. It allows me to have short breaks where I can eat and drink on flights like this. I don't use it much at all though. So, you're right. I do invest a lot into these. And I appreciate when it gets noticed. I care a lot about this channel and I strive to produce only the best quality aviation content. So I appreciate when that's all recognized, and since I do all of this by myself, I really appreciate you taking the time to watch! Thanks my friend!

Excellent video! LOVE the Boeing 747-800! So great to see this historic beast still carving out routes between continents! Just this past summer, I took my daughter to Greece, and we flew on a Lufthansa 747-800 from JFK to Frankfurt (perhaps the same airplane you were on), then transferred to an Airbus A321neo to Athens. I'm 61, and I still remember flying Olympic Airways 707's and 747's nonstop JFK to Athens back in the 70's and early 80's!
TH-cam currently has limits set at 250GB file size and 12 hour video length. Hence why you never see anything much longer on my channel. This video, at 8 hours, was right at 200GB. I'd love to take some even longer flights, but much longer and I'll be forced to start to cut out sections. Right now, I could probably squeeze in a 10 hour flight. I actually have Hawaiian flight 89 booked in about a month. That's the longest US domestic flight. It's about 11 hours. I'm going to do my best to compress that footage to get the whole thing uploadable. I don't think uploadable is a word, but you know what I mean haha.
On another note, in case anyone is wondering, because it's usually a follow up question. I travel with 2TB (2,000GB) on iPhones that I use exclusively for the channel. If one fills up, I switch to the next. I then travel with 3TB (3,000GB) of external storage via my laptop and a portable external drive to transfer data if needed. I then have 4TB (4,000GB) on a SSD on my main editing computer which is where I keep unedited footage. Once footage is edited and uploaded to YT, I transfer that data to external drives and store it. I have kept every piece of footage you've ever seen on the channel and I now have over 200TB (200,000GB) of external storage.
@@sla31 Absolutely insane! Does the iPhone record completely continuous without stopping or overheating? Is it possible for you to record in HDR 4K so we can enjoy the videos with HDR? :)
@@asafblasbergvideographer yes, with a caveat. It will continue to record continuously As long as it is not in direct sunlight. You have to be sitting on the soft light side of the plane. If you’re on the side of the plane with the sun is beating directly into the window, you only get like 12 minutes before it overheats. And as for HDR. I have actually been filming everything in HDR for quite some time. according to TH-cam, I am uploading it in a format that should allow it to be watched in HDR. I’m still trying to figure out why I’m filming in HDR, editing in HDR, uploading in an acceptable format, and it is still not available in HDR when processed by TH-cam.

You and me both haha. Although, as we discussed before. It's always easier traveling west. This was my only flight that day, so I went right to the hotel and got back on eastern time haha.
@@sla31 That's how they plan most flights over to the Asian Pacific countries where they arrive in the evening when you can crash in your hotel room later that night and when you wake up, your body clock will be reset to the local time.

watching these beasts climb into the air is fascinating. Took a flight from heathrow yesterday and as we were taking the turn onto the runway I saw a British Airways 747 400 lifting up. Truly a spectacular sight. no fear either, enjoyed the thrust of those engines! Great video as always!
I did a lot of flying when I was a kid in the 1960s/70s. What gets me is how much more powerful these newer engines are. Sometimes when I fly I like to just sit with my eyes closed and feel all of the mechanisms going on during take-off and landing. Feel the rush of air over and under the wings and the flaps generating extra lift.

I've taken United's Polaris product several times now. Specifically when their P&W 777's were grounded and they had their GE90 777's on their Hawaii routes. And this was when Hawaii still had a lot of Covid entry requirements, so I cleared upgrades on those easily. It's a great product! Now, they're back to running their P&W fleet to Hawaii with far less first class seats... So, no such luck recently. I've never flown business or first with Lufthansa. It was a classic photo!!

Well it's always easier to beat the sun setting when you're flying west. Think of it like this. The sun moves across the Earth at about 800mph. Obviously lights speed is much faster, but if you were to stand at a single spot and watch the sun set, you'd have to go about 800mph to catch back up to the sun. So, the light/dark line is moving around the Earth at about 800mph. So, when you're flying west, with the suns direction of travel, the sun is only beating you by about 200-300mph. You can fly west for A LONG time before you lose the sun. Flying east is, of course, the opposite. You lose the sun twice as fast. It's moving away from you at 800mph and you're traveling at 550mph the opposite direction. Meaning you moving away from the sun at 1,400mph. Honestly, we probably could've continued all the way to Los Angeles and still had the sun. This is why I prefer flying west over east. Anyway, thanks for watching my friend!

No need to be sorry my friend. I'm always happy to answer questions. How else do any of us ever learn new things, right? And this is a great question. What you're seeing there is indeed water in the air condensing. Due to the massive pressure difference created by the wing as the air splits around it and creates lift, you often get water condensing on the top side. When air splits over a wing, it creates a massive high pressure on the bottom side, and a massive low pressure on the top. This is, of course, what generates lift, as the high pressure below pushes up on the bottom of the wing as it tries to fill the void created by the low pressure. The extreme low pressure also causes the water vapor in the air to condense rapidly, which is what you see happening here. It's basically a small cloud forming for a brief second that then dissipates just a quickly when the pressure equalizes again. Since the air is moving very quickly over the wing, that vapor that's condensing often follows the air over certain parts of the wing, which is what happens here. Giving it that "ribbon" effect. Sometimes when it's very humid, the entire wing surface will be covered in the vapor since there is so much humidity in the air. Here we only got it for a few seconds over those specific parts of the wing, but it can be much more pronounced. I hope that helps! Thanks for watching!

Amazing video! Once again, great quality and a good seat to get for an amazing wing view. I don’t know KJFK at all, but a long taxi after landing- did it cross the same highway twice? Does anyone who knows this airport have an approximate taxiway list so I can look it up on an airport diagram? It also looked like they were changing runway directions from the aircraft that I assume were holding short after the landing. Thanks for a great video!
I just have a couple of questions for you. How did you manage to hold the video camera in your hand for 8 hours? How much memory does the sad card have?
A lot of practice. I have been doing this now for seven years, and I have consistently gotten better and better at holding the camera steady and for long periods of time. When I started this channel, I was doing good if I held the camera for five minutes at a time. Now, I can consistently hold the camera for two hours between breaks if needed. And then, I film everything with iPhones. So I don’t use SD cards. I currently travel with three iPhones. An iPhone 13 Pro with 1 TB of storage, and two iPhone 12 Pros with 512 GB each. Giving me 2 TB worth of immediate storage. I also travel with a laptop and a rugged external hard drive giving me an additional 3 TB of storage if needed.
How does your battery not die filming 8 hours at 4K? And where do you store all that data? That must be like hundreds of GB's - where do you save all that without changing the SD card?
I travel with multiple 20,000 mAh battery packs to keep everything charged while I"m filming. Otherwise I'd get about 1.5 hours out of my camera before it was dead. And yes, it's a lot of date. More like thousands of GB's to be honest. I just finished a 23,000 mile trip with 16 flights, and I used 2.5TB of storage. I travel with 3 iPhones (what I use to film with). One iPhone 13 Pro with 1TB of storage, and two iPhone 12 Pros with 512GB each. I then travel with my laptop that has 1TB of storage, as well as, as rugged 2TB external hard drive. When the first phone fills up I switch to the next, and so on. When they all fill up, I use my laptop and external drive to store the excess footage until I get home. Once at home I have an iMac with a 4TH SSD that I edit on. Then I have 200TB (that's 200,000GB) on an external hard drive farm that I store everything on long term. It's very expensive keeping this channel running haha.
Shake. Rattle and roll. 😅 Right after take off. Always happens when that massive landing gear is between getting retracted and lose contact with the concrete. If turbulences come your way you don't have to worry. You're sitting in a 4 engine flying castle. 60 years of handcraft expirience. 👍
No this was the return flight. It just took TH-cam this long to process the video... For some reason it took TH-cam over 2 months to have this video viewable in 4K.

it spunded like the whole plane shook while just getting off the ground. noticed then inboatdb high speed aileron came down full span one thing i didnt hear well was the sound of those engines spooling up.
There were certainly A LOT of vibrations right after takeoff. Probably mostly caused by the landing gear bogies free hanging and the wheels still spinning. Either way, it caught me a bit off guard. OMG, u used the exact same gate I used. Lyk in Frankfurt, all flights to the US have their own terminal gate. The bread they gave u was hard right. Then the last service which was one brown bread how was it?
I'm a bit of an anxious flyer. Can someone tell me what that vibration is coming from just as the plane leaves the ground on takeoff? I notice it sometimes when my flight takes off and it always makes me nervous lol. edit: it's the landing gear, I learned something new!
Sure my friend. I'm alway happy to answer any questions nervous flyers have. One of the tings I love about my channel is that it gives people who have anxieties towards flying a chance to see & experience flying form the comfort of their own home, or whoever they chose to watch. I see you've already found the answer to your question elsewhere, but I'll go ahead and elaborate in case anyone else has the same question. As you pointed out, it is the landing gear. Some aircraft it's much louder than on others, and on the 747-8 it's particularly loud due the massive size of its landing gear. More specifically, it happens when the landing gear leave the Earth and start to hang under the fuselage of the aircraft. When this happens, the wheels continue to spin, and this causes them to vibrate and shake as they begin to be retracted. All normal, and nothing to worry about. Thanks for watching my friend!

Naturally the wheels would continue to spin after they leave contact with the pavement, that's just simple physics and yet I didn't even think about that! 😅 Instead my mind assumed it was due to weak integrity of the fuselage or something like that. Well, a lot of the vibrations right after takeoff are because the landing gear are handing free and the wheels are still spinning. You see it on pretty much every aircraft. That said, it’s really loud and prevailing on the 747-8.
Happens with the -400 too. No aviation expert here by any means, but I suspect some of the rattling is also due to the fact that the pilot flying applies the wheel brakes after takeoff to slow down the spinning of the large main gear.
I’m honestly not sure. It is odd that they have economy, premium economy, and then more economy. It could just be that it was the best way to utilize the space.
pity haven't seen what kind of food do you get. Why you didn't show us ? only a glass of Coke ? Seeing food on such a great flight you did is also nice to see. not only the clouds up there.
I did show it. I showed it all multiple times. And the timestamps to find the shots of all three inflight services are listed in the slide bar at the bottom of the video and in the description. 1:21:26 - First Onboard Service 1:51:50 - Second Onboard Service 6:15:40 - Third Onboard Service I'm not sure how much easier I can make it for people to find them.
The piece between the flaps that stays mostly flat is the flaperon. It is a control surface you'll find on Boeing aircraft from the 767 all the way to the 747-8. All of their wide body aircraft have it. It is a hybrid control surface that is a mix between an aileron and flap. Its job is to increases stability and control at low speeds, as well as help deal with turbulence at high speeds. Airbus does not have a similar to control surface to compare it too.

When I flew Pan Am to London, after the flight I took a photo of me standing in front of the nose cone, from inside the building. I got a perfect reflection of me in the nose cone. It was a classic photo!!
What a great memory and photo to have! You know, in all my years of flying I don't think I ever even had the pleasure of seeing a PanAm 747.

Well it's always easier to beat the sun setting when you're flying west. Think of it like this. The sun moves across the Earth at about 800mph. Obviously lights speed is much faster, but if you were to stand at a single spot and watch the sun set, you'd have to go about 800mph to catch back up to the sun. So, the light/dark line is moving around the Earth at about 800mph. So, when you're flying west, with the suns direction of travel, the sun is only beating you by about 200-300mph. You can fly west for A LONG time before you lose the sun. Flying east is, of course, the opposite. You lose the sun twice as fast. It's moving away from you at 800mph and you're traveling at 550mph the opposite direction. Meaning you moving away from the sun at 1,400mph. Honestly, we probably could've continued all the way to Los Angeles and still had the sun. This is why I prefer flying west over east. Anyway, thanks for watching my friend!

No need to be sorry my friend. I'm always happy to answer questions. How else do any of us ever learn new things, right? And this is a great question. What you're seeing there is indeed water in the air condensing. Due to the massive pressure difference created by the wing as the air splits around it and creates lift, you often get water condensing on the top side. When air splits over a wing, it creates a massive high pressure on the bottom side, and a massive low pressure on the top. This is, of course, what generates lift, as the high pressure below pushes up on the bottom of the wing as it tries to fill the void created by the low pressure. The extreme low pressure also causes the water vapor in the air to condense rapidly, which is what you see happening here. It's basically a small cloud forming for a brief second that then dissipates just a quickly when the pressure equalizes again. Since the air is moving very quickly over the wing, that vapor that's condensing often follows the air over certain parts of the wing, which is what happens here. Giving it that "ribbon" effect. Sometimes when it's very humid, the entire wing surface will be covered in the vapor since there is so much humidity in the air. Here we only got it for a few seconds over those specific parts of the wing, but it can be much more pronounced. I hope that helps! Thanks for watching!

Does anyone who knows this airport have an approximate taxiway list so I can look it up on an airport diagram? I just have a couple of questions for you. How did you manage to hold the video camera in your hand for 8 hours? How much memory does the sad card have?
A lot of practice. I have been doing this now for seven years, and I have consistently gotten better and better at holding the camera steady and for long periods of time. When I started this channel, I was doing good if I held the camera for five minutes at a time. Now, I can consistently hold the camera for two hours between breaks if needed. And then, I film everything with iPhones. So I don’t use SD cards. I currently travel with three iPhones. An iPhone 13 Pro with 1 TB of storage, and two iPhone 12 Pros with 512 GB each. Giving me 2 TB worth of immediate storage. I also travel with a laptop and a rugged external hard drive giving me an additional 3 TB of storage if needed.

I film everting with iPhones. This flight was filmed with an iPhone 13 Pro. I now film with the 14 Pro.
How does your battery not die filming 8 hours at 4K? And where do you store all that data? That must be like hundreds of GB's - where do you save all that without changing the SD card?
I travel with multiple 20,000 mAh battery packs to keep everything charged while I"m filming. Otherwise I'd get about 1.5 hours out of my camera before it was dead. And yes, it's a lot of date. More like thousands of GB's to be honest. I just finished a 23,000 mile trip with 16 flights, and I used 2.5TB of storage. I travel with 3 iPhones (what I use to film with). One iPhone 13 Pro with 1TB of storage, and two iPhone 12 Pros with 512GB each. I then travel with my laptop that has 1TB of storage, as well as, as rugged 2TB external hard drive. When the first phone fills up I switch to the next, and so on. When they all fill up, I use my laptop and external drive to store the excess footage until I get home. Once at home I have an iMac with a 4TH SSD that I edit on. Then I have 200TB (that's 200,000GB) on an external hard drive farm that I store everything on long term. It's very expensive keeping this channel running haha.
Shake. Rattle and roll. 😅 Right after take off. Always happens when that massive landing gear is between getting retracted and lose contact with the concrete. If turbulences come your way you don't have to worry. You're sitting in a 4 engine flying castle. 60 years of handcraft expirience. 👍
And man, where the landing gear bogies sure rattling on this beauty haha 😂

No this was the return flight. It just took TH-cam this long to process the video... For some reason it took TH-cam over 2 months to have this video viewable in 4K.
How do you get your camera/phone to stick on the window like that?
I typically hold the camera by hand. Otherwise the vibrations form the plane get transferred into the lens of the camera and you get a “jitter” in the footage.

one thing i didnt hear well was the sound of those engines spooling up.
There were certainly A LOT of vibrations right after takeoff. Probably mostly caused by the landing gear bogies free hanging and the wheels still spinning. Either way, it caught me a bit off guard. OMG, u used the exact same gate I used. Lyk in Frankfurt, all flights to the US have their own terminal gate. The bread they gave u was hard right. Then the last service which was one brown bread how was it?
I'm a bit of an anxious flyer. Can someone tell me what that vibration is coming from just as the plane leaves the ground on takeoff? I notice it sometimes when my flight takes off and it always makes me nervous lol. edit: it's the landing gear, I learned something new!
Sure my friend. I'm alway happy to answer any questions nervous flyers have. One of the tings I love about my channel is that it gives people who have anxieties towards flying a chance to see & experience flying form the comfort of their own home, or whoever they chose to watch. I see you've already found the answer to your question elsewhere, but I'll go ahead and elaborate in case anyone else has the same question. As you pointed out, it is the landing gear. Some aircraft it's much louder than on others, and on the 747-8 it's particularly loud due the massive size of its landing gear. More specifically, it happens when the landing gear leave the Earth and start to hang under the fuselage of the aircraft. When this happens, the wheels continue to spin, and this causes them to vibrate and shake as they begin to be retracted. All normal, and nothing to worry about. Thanks for watching my friend!

Naturally the wheels would continue to spin after they leave contact with the pavement, that's just simple physics and yet I didn't even think about that! 😅 Instead my mind assumed it was due to weak integrity of the fuselage or something like that. Well, a lot of the vibrations right after takeoff are because the landing gear are handing free and the wheels are still spinning. You see it on pretty much every aircraft. That said, it’s really loud and prevailing on the 747-8.
I'd be freaking out demanding to be let off 😳
Happens with the -400 too. No aviation expert here by any means, but I suspect some of the rattling is also due to the fact that the pilot flying applies the wheel brakes after takeoff to slow down the spinning of the large main gear.

I’m honestly not sure. It is odd that they have economy, premium economy, and then more economy. It could just be that it was the best way to utilize the space.

What is the small section of wing between the flaps that remains flat but it did go down during speed brake test and take-off?
The piece between the flaps that stays mostly flat is the flaperon. It is a control surface you'll find on Boeing aircraft from the 767 all the way to the 747-8. All of their wide body aircraft have it. It is a hybrid control surface that is a mix between an aileron and flap. Its job is to increases stability and control at low speeds, as well as help deal with turbulence at high speeds. Airbus does not have a similar to control surface to compare it too.

@@sla31 I'm one to generally not put stock in those sorts of complaint numbers. Mostly because I feel like, "How many of these complaints are for things within the airline's control and how many are over things out of the airline's control?"
