I have been playing the piano for 72 years (and I'm not going to stop until I figure it out). I've studied with some fantastic people, including a few lessons with Mme. Rosina Lhevinne. I mention this simply to make you aware that I know a little bit about this stuff. This young man is simply remarkable, a stupendous technique at the service of a real artist. To play the Brahms that well at 18 is hard to fathom. And in the Ravel, his sense of the shape of the music and beautiful control of the sound are in the forefront, not the fearsome technical demands. Again, that phenomenal technique used in service of the music. He's a gift to those of us who love to hear a great musician play the piano.
By the way, there are some master classes of his available on youtube. At least they were last time I looked. They are very valuable, because they give you some insight into how he thinks about music. I watch the Andras Schiff master classes for the same reason. Those classes are almost never about piano-playing. They are about how to decode the mysteries of masterworks.

Mr. Allen, I sincerely wish you a healthy and wealthy long life, to play piano for 100 years and more! And I wish the same to the incredibly talented Mr. Zhang as well as to myself - I've played piano for 44 years so far and my teacher was a pupil of the great György Sándor. I have found the purpose of life playing piano, and I'm sure you'd agree with me. All the best! Bill from Texas.

Thank you for making such a wonderful Cliburn Watch Party, a real throwback to the previous editions of one of world's greatest piano competition. However, it would be much appreciated if The Cliburn would upload a real high definition video of this wonder final recital by Haochen, this video/audio quality is even worse than the the dvd I purchased from the foundation 11 years ago. I think his amazing performance could be and should be better represented.

Haochen's playing is impressive with purity and depth. He doesn't show off and is a true musician. When a performer becomes commercial, overacting and taking on wearing shocking outfits or such, it truly cheapens the art. Please stay true to the art.
