- Folks in the know said that Beautiful Jim Key was The Smartest Horse That Ever Lived. His story is a true story. I spent several years checking it out in Tennessee where he was raised and where he died and in the national archives and other libraries around the USA. I partnered with author Miriam Rivas on a book called Beautiful Jim Key. I am not a horse person or even a horseback rider, but I was given the opportunity to do several films with people who love and understood horses. Magnificent animals they are for sure.
I have met people who have spend their lives studying the intelligence of horses and they agree that Jim Key and what he did not only with spelling words but in mathematics and in understanding his trainer, mentor and partner, Bill Key, a former slave turned entrepreneur, could very well be completely true. Bill Key Was an extraordinary entrepreneur who when granted his freedom, built a horse racing arena and large horse veterinary practice in Tennessee. when the Civil War and the South destroyed it, he bought a home for his former "master" and this was documented in local papers at the time. He also negotiated an incredible financial arrangement with the New York Circus promoter who partnered with him to take Jim too many locations around the country performing before tens of thousands.
I also have a deep admiration for how incredible Bill Key worked with animal rights organizations to make Americans aware horses as sentient beings. Also, I am amazed that on many nights at the St. Louis World's Fair - 1904 - Bill and Jim Key performed before 19,000 people in the building built specifically for them and their performance. It was at that world's fair that Jim competed against sixth-graders and beat them in a spelling bee. It was major news in the papers at that time.
As a result of Bill Key's efforts, Jim Key also became THE symbol for one of the most important animal rights movements in America beginning in the 1890s. And millions of American schoolchildren signed a pledge that stated "I will try to be kind to all harmless living creatures and try to protect them from cruel usage." Jim Key’s photograph doing one of his tricks was posted on the pledge.

My neighbour's horse took a liking to me years ago. We have a strong bond and he is proof to me that he possesses great intelligence and compassion. He gets out of his pasture and heads to my house on an almost daily basis. You've not lived until you open your front door to have a gigantic horse walk right past you and enter your den.
I think he thinks he's a dog. But, he's a brilliant companion and is no trouble at all. I can put him back in his pasture by simply walking him over. No tricks, no gimmicks. He just follows and waits for me to open the gate. There's such intelligence in those eyes of his and he's always been very gentle with me. I adore him!

I've always had animals around me since I was little. One thing I've noticed is the more time you spend with them building a connection the more you come to have an unspoken language with them and that applies to all sorts of different animals. I don't work so I'm with my two dogs 24/7. They are both special in their own way but one in particular understands every word. If my husband and I are talking she knows what we are saying. I don't mean typical trigger words like "food" "sit" "walkies" . Yesterday I said something about changing the curtains and she walked over to the window to have a look. Recently I said "have you seen the tv remote control?" and although I wasn't talking to her she went and found it behind the couch. If I get a phone call from my parents saying they are coming over and she hears the conversation she will watch the driveway because she knows they are coming. I mean I could list examples all day.
My question is why are we just learning about this now. This kind of story should be in history books! So glad that you bring us these wonderful stories❤️

That should be written facts in textbooks and perhaps readers would elect to read more, having more positive reading material to choose from. According to race, absolutely this story shines a bright light on this particular black man of high inelegance and warm heart, so I understand why in that time it may have been a factor unfortunately, just as if it had been a female. Beautiful truth has always been and continues to be an offense to the nay sayers of a culture trying to create a negative generation regardless of race or gender is most likely the reason we haven’t read this beautiful and brilliant story. Hoping to see a Morgan Freeman movie soon. That sure would be a step in the right direction! :) If we could vote on this, it would surely come to fruition soon I trust. Thank you.
Great story! I have heard about Jim. My friends Grandaddy had a mule named Fella who watered the other animals everyday. He would pull around a long water hose from the barn spigot turning the water on with his nose, water all the troughs and would finish by watering Granny's garden. EVERYDAY except Sunday. He would sleep all day on Sunday. When I knew Fella he was 24 years old. He was buried in a secret place surrounded by family and friends. Looking forward to the film.

@@shakeybritches8089 I was told that when Fella was very young, his mother got sick and died, he was hand nursed by my friends Grandad and Granny. As he grew up he would follow them around doing "chores" and one day he was playfully trying to pull the water hose out of someone's hand and they began letting him help pull the hose around. As the folks got older and slower he seemed to just want to help. The water valve was a no-freeze type with a handle that lifted up to open and they taught him to turn it off and on. Of course they made a big deal about it and started giving him an apple or something else as a reward. After several years Granny would show him how to hold the hose and do the watering. It became his job most days and he just kept it up. Except on Sundays, which is the part that I always thought was so amazing. Grandad would say he was a "Good Christian" and took his day of rest like the rest of the family very seriously.

I’m 55 and have heard of it, I guess it depends what part of the country we all grew up in, and what schools decided, at that time period in life, what was more important to learn about.

We had a horse back in the 80's named Brandy that would go around every morning and let all the other animals out of their stalls. He would let the chickens out and their coop had a door with a standard house doorknob, so we didn't think he could have been doing it. We had come to the conclusion that a person was sneaking onto the farm at night and doing all this stuff to be mischievous. One night, me and my Dad decided we would catch the perp and give them a good talking too. We went down and set up a blind and sat there all night and never saw a thing until the next morning around 5:00am. What we saw had us laughing so hard it hurt. There was Brandy, going from one stall to the next opening every door and greeting each animal individually like he was making sure they had a good night sleep. When he got to the chicken house, he wrapped his lips around that doorknob and had to contort his whole body to get the doorknob to turn enough to release. That was the funniest part. He pushed the door open and stood there until all the chickens cleared his hooves. (That's a story in itself. A few years prior to this, he had stepped on a chicken and killed it. After that incident, every time a chicken was close to him he would stop moving until he knew the chicken had cleared his hooves.)
Brandy lived to be 28 years old. One day he didn't come back to the barn, so we went searching for him. He was laying under an oak tree in a pasture we call "The Hill". An interesting tidbit about Brandy is that my Dad purchased him at auction from the Atlanta, Georgia Police Department. For the first 20 years of his life he was part of the mounted patrol in Atlanta. It was our understanding that a Police Officer had been shot off his back. We aren't sure if that is true or not, but that's what we were told by someone at the Auction.
David Hoffman - Thank you for posting this video. It conjured up a lot of great memories for me and my Dad. My Dad is 87 years old now and talking about all this made him laugh just as hard as we did back in 1985. The bad part is... I feel like I need to go out and buy another horse!

I'm 58 now and when i was young i remember my great grandmother telling me about a horse that could count, read, spell and add. I thought she was stretching it and the horse was just doing tricks. Maybe this was the horse she was talking about. She would have been 17 yrs at the time of the world's fair. I think she went to it because she did have some things in her home on display from the fair.

One of my horses once saved me from a vicious dog who was stalking me to attack me. I was on foot and my horse came down from the hill and chased the dog away viciously.

My daughter was in a wagon wreck with her coach. They were both thrown from the wagon and received non critical injures, (my girl got a concussion and eight staples in her head) but you know that you take a few to gain your senses. Those horses waited by them. They didn't just head for the barn.
I had a stallion that would kill dogs, woodchucks, possoms and raccoons that ventured into the paddock.
My neighbors quickly gave up on letting their sport dogs into the field to chase the horses.
This has to be one of the most interesting / incredible stories I have ever come across. This story covers the American Civil War, slavery, The Humane Society, an incredible human being by the name of Bill Key and a beautiful intelligent horse Jim Key. This is American history at its best. I would have loved to have met Bill Key and watched Jim Key in action. I showed this film to my mother and she absolutely loved it. She said she could listen to David Hoffman all day as he has such a lovely voice. She has also seen the film with Nette Mitchell about Emmalane. We are now going to see what other amazing films you have made.

I'm from Shelbyville,. We were never taught this story, and I was in my 60's before I heard about it. We used to comment that the best thing to come out of Shelbyville was US-231, but now I can proudly move Jim Key to the top of that list.

I actually have never found it hard to believe that animals are intelligent but more than that some are wise, knowing, understanding and capable of unconditional love. Moreover, animals are healing and they come into our lives to help us awaken a part of our soul that we didn’t even know existed. There are so many horses that are trick horses, they are so smart (all horses)... what makes this particular horse "special" is that people at the time didn't see the intelligence. So, this guy trained this horse and back then it was so unique, the horse got attention. In Oct. 2020, my horse saved the lives of several horses in a fully engulfed barn fire. I don't see anyone making a big deal out of my horse. It was briefly covered on TV and internet and on TH-cam. My horse is super intelligent, understands things in amazing ways and has had professionals marvel at his good manners and intelligence. So, why is my horse not famous? Because there are SO many trained and trick horses all over, on TV, movies, internet.... etc. Back in the 19th century, yeah, this horse is seen as the smartest horse (though, looking at the videos beside this one, it appears there's an awful lot of "smartest horses" in this world). Now, people KNOW how intelligent horses are (some more than others). Horses understand more than most humans can even comprehend.

My beautiful Tennesse Walker/Fox Trotter named Shadow had to be put to sleep 2 weeks ago at about 30 years old. He was my best friend and such a gentleman. He took good care of his pasture mate Sugar protecting her from all the creatures of the night. I know I will get over this loss, but it's

I am so very sorry for the loss of your friend, your companion, your loved one. It is so agonizing and heart-wrenching when our beloved family member has to be put to sleep. I grieve with you. I had to make that same decision ~2 years ago for my beloved Lucy, for her sake. The decision you made was enormously loving. And terribly heartbreaking. The pain and grief subsides over time. I still grieve for Lucy. My thoughts and prayers are with you, Fatima.
I was lucky enough to have a horse like that for my best friend for 26 years. I miss him every day. I’m so sorry for your loss but you have been lucky to have ever experienced that connection. I doubt I ever will again.

When young, we had a Tennessee Walker named Nancy. We little kids rode her bareback. BUT, if one of us began slipping off, she would immediately halt until we could regain our balance. No one ever taught her to do that, she was smart and loved children.
Tennessee Walkers are "🎵smooooth as Tennessee Whisky🎶" when you ride them! They seem pretty intelligent as well!
Our Palomino horse, Zap, was quite the character. He would answer me with loud return whinny's when I called to him. He developed as a guardian- Zap would give a very distinct, "come asap" call when anything was wrong. Examples- the water trough was tipped over, a horse was in trouble, someone got hurt, etc. It was amazing and we all knew if we heard that call to drop everything and get to the horses.
We as humans do not give animals enough credit, I have a medical alert service dog" Cocco" He's 10 yrs old. I have seen my dog do amazing things. My neighbor n his dog who is female doesn't like children . One day the dog got away from the owner n went after a child walking by , my dog chased after her, grabbed her leash n down stayed her. He kept her leash in his mouth until the owner got there. I didn't tell my dog to do this. He saw a problem n took action . The whole time the naughty female dog tried n tried to get away from Cocco, but he wouldn't let her go . He stopped her from bitting that child.
First, dogs are more intelligent than horses blue they aren’t naturally skiddish from being prey for, well, forever and horses can not spell no matter how much you want to believe it.

Yes, horses are intelligent but most of what the horse did were simple tricks taking place at a circus where it is highly controlled to get the maximum amount of money from people like you.
Also, why was Key looked at as a positive character while fighting for the south. I thought we couldn’t have that anymore?????????????? Did he kill or try to kill any intelligent human trying to release his people from slavery????????????

Being a horse owner for over 50 years and having devoured every great horse book I could find over the years beginning the moment I could read, I was surprised to find this book a few years ago. It's an incredible story that I had never heard of before. I hope they do make this into a movie. The story is so unbelievably wonderful, it could only be true. I heartily recommend it for anyone to read. You don't have to be a horse lover to enjoy the story of Dr. Bill Key and Beautiful Jim Key.

I trained many, many horses, they are not all the same. However, I had the privilege of encountering a horse that was incredibly intelligent and I taught that horse amazing tricks and developed a language which I could communicate with that horse. I believe that the right trainer, with the right horse could easily achieve all that is shown here.

My horse Silverado was very intelligent. I told him one day, "go and find my brother, ". He put his nose on the ground and sniffed around a bit. The then walked over to the shed and stopped. I jumped off and looked in the shed. My brother was there!

When I was growing up my grandpa had a horse named Roscoe that would let himself out of the barn and into pasture every morning.. He had to unlock and open the door to his stall, and then slide the barn door open.. When my grandpa figured out what was going on.. He cut a piece of pipe and put it between the sliding door and the wall, so the door couldn't slide open.. It took a couple weeks but Roscoe figured out he had to move the pipe to open the door..
Then your dad was like f that off to the glue factory he went
Mark Lada we had a cow who would lift the chain up over the gate post with her nose and let the herd out of the yard. The only other cow that learned to do this was her daughter.

The farm I live on has a bunch of horses. I can't remember who it started with.... Possibly the stud Mr. But who ever started it taught it to several others. The stud found out if he bumped the bottom of the stall enough the latch would come up. Then he just slides the door open with his mouth. I have seen quite a few of them do it.... Only ever saw a gelding named rocky actually trying to work out how the doors on the other end of the barn work. I have so many videos of that horse going around the stall door trying to work out how that kind is opened. If you just bang the latch and make the noise he immediately grabs the door with his mouth and pushes to open it.
Its so amazing. They are such clever animals. Bless them.

It is a wonderful story. I am a horse lover, so I heard about him many years ago. I remember hearing at some point that certain people tested him to try to debunk it because they thought there was some trick to it. I thought, what difference does it make?! No matter how you look at it, he is really intelligent! I have trained many horses in my life, as well as other animals and the key I've discovered is love and trust. If you build a relationship with ANY "sentient being" (as it was so beautifully said), that being will do anything possible to return that kindness. I always say, Every day I strive to be the person that my dog thinks I am! Well, that goes for any animal! Because animals always give you the benefit of the doubt!
When we were still young living with our grandmother in the village we were many kids at home and very stubborn, we had a goat that loved grandma so much, it used to only listen to her, no one else at home took it for grazing except her, and wen she was unable, she could talk to her to follow us that's when she could accept to go with us without resistance. It was very intelligent that it used to tell her every stubborn things we did at home in her absence. One day when we had gone to school grandma was attacked by a bull and this goat fought with the bull to protect grandma that broke his front leg and horn, she was never sold or slaughtered, she died of old age and grandma was labelled a witch for burring a goat with a tomb stone. The goat was called "Nakazi" meaning super woman.
We have her grand children at home they are called Noble's in our language because we don't eat them, they all die of old age.

I can believe this story, as well as the Jim Key story. I have had a super-intelligent pony, horse, and goat in my life at different times. All can be smarter than a dog. All enjoy being with a human if you treat them as your best buddy. I would have slept with them if there had been room. I was an only child and I thought more of my horse than any human. I never trained him for tricks like Jim Key, but I believe he could have done nearly as well if I had. He died when he was 34.

My God, how have I never heard this story? I grew up and live in St. Louis, where the 1904 World's Fair is still regularly recognized, remembered, referenced, celebrated, etc. I've never once heard the story of Jim Key, just stories about ice cream cones being invented. This is incredible.
Also Iced tea and the hot dog were invented at the 1904 Worlds Fair!
Loved this story. I sure hope they make a movie. I had a horse when I was a teenager. Raised him from a colt. I can attest to their intelligence. Love, patience and kindness goes a long way. The things I taught him in his short time was near and dear to my heart. I will never forget the unique bond we had.
I'm in my 60's but I've never heard about this horse. I grew up on an Egyptian horse farm and can verify that they are highly intelligent, but nothing like this magnificent being. Thank you for sharing this story

I had a beautiful paint horse growing up, I rode mostly bareback and he would read my body language, he also let my little dog ride on his back too.

I read about this horse and he and his owner’s story back in 2000. I named my weanling colt Jim Key. I love this story.
Anybody whose had a horse with more ideas than a human can figure out is magic.
After surviving the year 2020, I needed a pick me up like the Jim Key story. I loved every second of it. I will pray that one day I will get to see this exciting story on film!!!

@@alan4sure My Jim Key became a sheriff's posse horse after I sold him. An important job not all horses have the heart for, but certainly not a "genius horse".
He would be 20 yrs old now.
It sounds like poor Jim may have been what they call a “dummy” baby. They walk in circles as if in a daze. Recently they discovered that wrapping the colt tight and replicating the birth canal will snap the colt into reality. The tight wrap releases hormones that take the colt out of the twilight zone of being in utero. It’s very interesting. BTW my horse is VERY smart! They are amazing, wonderful animals.

@@sweetpea3472 I am not sure that babies need any swaddling. It is normal for newborns to want to move their limbs. They are not in the womb anymore and it is OK if adjustment to this new world is slightly uncomfortable at times - that is what gets their growth and development going. Get them thinking they are back in utero and they will want to sleep way too much.

Growing up, I had an Arabian stud horse. He was a very smart horse. Like Jim Key, he also would answer questions we asked him with head shakes, nods, & whines. He also would paw the ground to respond to us. Arabians are very intelligent & loving horses. I hope they make a movie about this horse.
Yes my Arabian got upset and off standish when I would come home from college. All though he was always a little rebeal, Cricket was smart.. and might have had greater potential. My dad bought him from a rancher who's daughters out grew him. I know them well! I know those 3 girls spoiled thier 4H horse. He became pretty cool, and I morn that I was at college the day he passed in pasture of old age. We share a special bond to this day over the gift thier father sold us. And work...Cricket had skills!!
Bingo! I worked with over 150 horses. I will say Arabians are well-communicated than any other breeds.

That is a wonderful story! I`ve never heard of him before(and this is coming from a horse nut(when I was 10+ years old)). My mother got me a pony when I was 12 and I loved him more than anything! When I got older and unable to afford to board him anymore, I let him stay at the farm he had been living at for 12+ years, and he had his friends. He died about 30 years ago. RIP Comanche boy!
Jeff: even though he had a big whole in his heart when u left him arranging him to stay at the same stable really helped him. I hate it when all these horses form attachments with both humans and animals and then they are just sold. Breaks my heart and the horses as well. Yes they are impacted when they are bounced from stable to stable. Yes they form attachments. Yes they have emotions. And they are very, very soulful creatures.

We had a horse named Major. My brother bought him when I was six years old and I learned to ride him bareback because we were poor and couldn’t afford a saddle. When we moved to the edge of a small town, our neighbor next-door let us keep Major in their fenced pasture. He would break out once in a while and would come up on our front porch and stick his head in our door. A reporter for the local newspaper happen to see him do it and took his picture and it was in the newspaper. He was the best horse you could ever imagine, so gentle.

I grew up with horses and other animals. They were all intelligent when you respect them (kindness), and they trust you. Make the movie!!! Lots of stories in this world. I too have one. Why are you waiting for the movie. You have many horses. Pick one "clumsy" and make another Jim. When I was a child, my family had a horse (South of Bosnia and Herzegovina-Europe, to be precise) who never had let any wolf to hurt either him or other horses that belonged to the family and neighbors.
Also in the book Empire of the Summer Moon, it has been described how Kwanah Parker, the las Comanche chief trained his horse to help him to pick wounded worriors and bring them to safety.

I concur. I've reared many horses in last fifty years. Some haven't the ability to learn more than rudimentary things. Others are rather entellegent
A few have. Been at least as intelligent as a 4 to 6 yr old human. That said I have not spent 24/7 with any of them. So in actuallity I could see one or more of the higher smart horses being capable of doing at least some of the things report to be capable by this horse.
One mare I owned from birth to death 33yrs. Was capable of checking the mail by voice command. Going to certain other people's place to carry a msg and be sent home by the recipient. Capable of being taken away from her barn on property and quite literally slowing me to lay down and hold stirup and being told drag me to the barn and doing so without stepping on me dragging besides her. Counting to ten. Choosing her choice of food for dinner. That's pretty good for a horse if you ask me

Here's a cat story...
My dad was dying of cancer & for the first time in 47 years they weren't able to go down to his place in Mexico for the winter. My dad has always loved cats but my mother, not so much. We all wanted to get him one when he got sick but it was a big ole no from my mom.
My folks lived in a 20 unit patio home situation that all looked exactly the same from the outside. One night this adult male cat shows up on their patio sleeping on one of the chair cushions. He had 20 to choose from. They fed him outside but didnt let him in. He just wouldnt leave.
They posted a found cat thing on some local FB pages & the owners contacted them. They were shocked as they lived a good 20 min drive away across a 6 lane highway in a different town. They happily took him home & forced my folks to take 20.00 for taking care of him. 3 days later, he was back. It was cold so they let him in & he would not leave my dad's side.
They called the people again & everyone laughed about it & even thought he was maybe getting in a vehicle or something as he loves going in to sniff cars. They took him home again & 4 days later, he was back.
This time, the people told my folks that they had sold their house & had 2 indoor cats & this guy that liked to go outside. They asked if they wanted him as he obviously wanted them. Well, that cat slept with my dad every night for the next 11 months. He was the reason my dad would walk around outside, the reason he got up when he didn't want to to feed him & he kept him company until the day he went into palliative care. We brought 'puddy tat' in there the day my dad had chosen to pass & he just snuggled into the crook of my dad's tiny, tiny arm & purred & slept.
My dad opted for assisted dying so while his favorite music played & his family all around him, he petted that damn cat until he passed.
Ugh...I'm bawling now...
So, this was just last August, I miss him so, so much.
The cat is still with my mom even though she is not a fan & there isn't a time I look at that cat that I don't seen the peace in my dad's eyes & remember the joy he gave my amazing dad...
After he passed we were putting together photos & such & had them spread out on the spare bed. I have a picture of 'Puddy Tat' curled up with one outstretched arm over a picture of my father as a young man.
Ugh...first time I've written all that. That was tough but also makes me happy. Definitely need to go fix my face now.

It is so true. I once accidentally opened the gate with 12 horses coming in for their own dinner meals (during my "turn-in" duty). They all rushed inside the stall barn right away. 10 out of 12 horses knew which stalls that they are belonged to. I'm amazed they knew the specific stall that they are supposed to be reside at! Donkey included.

I'm 69, amazed at the stories we hear nothing about...and I'm also a professed horse nut, currently the owner of my daughter's wild-caught Mustang, Annie, who is now 17yo. I adopted her as a 2yo, when my daughter was 12. I love a good historical story...and have read Seabiscuit, Wild Horse Annie and The Last of The Mustangs, The Eighty-Dollar Champion...and still have to read The Perfect Horse, and The Ride of Her Life. Read every Black Stallion book in the library when I was young. Sure wish I had known about all the others I've collected. Not only great stories about the horse, but such a great way to really understand the history that was going on at that time. Thank you again! You have a new subscriber.😊

Yes! The world needs to see just how intelligent horses are! My stallion is only two years old and can play fetch, he can bring you a drink from a cooler, he puts his toys away in the toy box. He can sit, bow, lay down, give you a kiss, smile, the possibilities are endless if only we treat them with kindness and respect.
I ordered the book today from Amazon. As a horse owner I'm excited to read this story. Horses are amazing animals. I bet my grandma knew about Jim she would have been a child when he was so popular.

I had a horse who was a gentle small beautiful Arab. He was a stallion until I purchased him and I had him for 25 yrs until he was 35 yrs old. They are amazing animals. I was so privileged to have this wonderful horse. He had been a racehorse and was a backdrop horse for the Black Stallion movie. I still dream about riding like the wind. You can’t explain the feeling. I know in my heart that they also go to Heaven. God breathed the breath of life in them.
Not only will our beloved animal companions be with us in Heaven, we will be able to communicate with them as if by talking. I just hope they won't tell other people any embarrassing stories.

Why don't we learn things like this in school? There is so much history that is inspiring and teaches kids that kindness, courage and creating a difference is more important than anything else. I have grown up with horses. I have worked with them my entire life. They are very special.

As a kid (17). Me and my doberman was having a argument. I want him to do something and he did not and it made me mad. My mom said he is just a dumb dog leave him alone, the dog smiled and then went out side. I put one of my hats on the bed in my bedroom. Then i told my mom I will show you he no dumb dog and he understands English when he comes in. His favorite toy was a flash light and the battery's were dead. So when he came in my mom was in the living room also, I said Doby go into my bed room on the bed bring me my hat. If you do I will take you to lanes and buy you new flash light battery's. He run in my bed room jumped on the bed grabbed my hat and run into the living room dropped it at my feet. I looked at him and my mom and said now tell mom your a dumb dog and don't understand English. He growled at me and was pissed off. My mom made sure I took him to lanes and got his flash light battery's.

Yeah...by a white slave owner, no less. Lots of slave owners...like my own ancestors...were kind to their slaves. That doesn't mean that the black slaves LOVED being slaves, but it was a hell of a lot better than what alot of black slaves experienced AFTER they were freed by Lincoln...who didn't give a f about slaves. He cared about SOUTHERN LAND AND MONEY and was willing to burn the South to get it. Once the slaves were freed...enormous suffering was unleashed for them.
I LOVE HORSES! Riding our neighbor's mare as a child changed my life. Riding her instilled in me a warm feeling of safety and comfort. I recall that warm gentle feeling when I am upset. I can feel her to this day. I have kept pictures of horses around me all my life. Horses are a gift from God. 💙

I found a greeting card with a horse spelling out the words "Merry Christmas". I ordered one and found out from the card maker that she designed it in memory of a horse called Beautiful Jim Key. She told my about the book so I bought one and read it. Since that time I've longed to see the movie made, knowing it would be very challenging to train a horse to be as great as Beautiful Jim Key. Maybe that's why Hollywood hasn't risen to the challenge. How refreshing it would be to have a nice clean movie for a change!! I fell in love with Beautiful Jim Key. Read the book if you get a chance. I also loved this short film and thank David very much for telling the story. Come on Hollywood...start auditioning and planning!!!

I had a horse like this when I was a kid, an appaloosa with lots of arabian throughbred and quarterhorse in his ancestry. He was super smart, he could open every gate , turn on faucets, open locks. I could teach him all kinds of tricks. He was always getting up to all sorts of mischief too. He was a regular Mr Ed without the vocal chords. Too bad my parents gave him away. I've known a lot of horses but never another like him he was special. RIP Blueberry
My horse was a mustang I bought named Nancy and she was like that! Always turning the water on and playing in it. There's never been a lock she couldn't open. I always told her she was to smart for her own good 😂😂😂 she would let the other horses out played with the dogs she was a great horse ❤️❤️❤️
I learned to ride on an Arabian Horse named Kim. He did the sorts of things your Blueberry did. He was over 20 when he became my teaching horse. He was very special.
I am heartbroken to hear your parents gave your special horse away 😭 I am sure your dear friend never forgot you. Hoping he found new owners who treated him as well as you did. 🙏❤🐴

Shewolfen yes appy/arab cross would probably be extremely clever... and in the right hands, a fantastic horse! Sounds like you had a fabulous companion (as I did with my two childhood horses- one QH the other one Cremello with appy mix) I’m so sorry to heat your parents gave him away- my parents did the same when I went to university and I’ve never quite forgiven them! Such a shock to come home to an empty stall...I actually fell apart for a few years, not having my equine compass. I now know that I need horses in my life in some form ( I ride once a week) otherwise I feel completely unbalanced!
My dogs definitely help, but for me at least, horses have a way of keeping me grounded in the here and now. They are absolutely magical animals and I feel exceptionally privileged to be able to be a part of their lives
I'm a horse PERSON and even if your not this was a awesome story showing THAT if use you mind and hard work and patience he bought the man's home back shows that he was a loyal and compensate for life. Truly a great person and horse
David I’ve been a professional horseman (woman) for 45 years having had my first encounter with a horse at age 5. Through unimaginable hurdles I managed to make horses my life. I know firsthand the intelligence of equines. I’ve seen it all my life! Thank you for this astounding look back to a beautiful story of love and mutual respect. I love you for sharing this.
