    Awesome, the reverser is working, now for the rest of it!

      This is the new style power reverser. All the power comes from the poor guy turning the wheel.

    Glad they got it under cover!

    i enjoyed that. i especially got a kick out of watching the reversing gear moving. by the way my dad was a riveter at the workshops and helped build it. then later he was a fireman on it. it was a much admired loco by the people who worked on it. and according to wikipedia, it was the most powerful loco in the country for 50 years.

      I wounder if heavy harry could pull a normaly double headed PN freaght train by it's self

    • @vsvnrg3263
      @vsvnrg3263 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@danielpizzey212 , probably not. modern diesels can pull far more than even older diesels, let alone steam engines. steam engines work best when they have some pace up, not when starting off. the union pacific big boys can pull some remarkably large freight trains up long hills. in fact they were designed for sherman hill which, i think, is 60 miles (100k's) long. harry was designed to pull the overland but never got the chance.

      Love to see HH restored but can’t see it ever happening. It was actually to second most powerful loco in Australia, the 6000 Garret’s Of NSW were significantly more powerful and some are still running closely followed by the SAR 520 class, 3rd most powerful also still running.🇦🇺

    • @vsvnrg3263
      @vsvnrg3263 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@raymondwelsh6028 , if you are talking horsepower, the garretts are no match for harry. they had more starting power. but not as much of that as the 57's. the big 500 class sar loco was truly awesome but has smaller driving wheels. so unless someone can present documentation proving the horsepower like harry's, whose dyno chart is on the internet proving 3600hp at 45mph then there can be no argument as to what was the most powerful loco in the country until the an and nr class arrived.

      Going on tractive effort which I know is only an equation taking in boiler pressure an cylinder and wheel size etc. the 6000 class Garret’s at 59,559 to 63,016 lbs was at the top of the list. Heavy Harry 55,008 lbs. SAR 500 and 520 classes respectively were 51,076 and 32,582 lbs. Small potatoes compared to the US Big Boy at 135,400 and the Triplex 160,00 to 168,000 lbs tractive effort. Still love to see H H going but has as much hope of a replica S class being done.🇦🇺

    I am not a steam nut but found Heavy Harry to be worth visiting when in Melbourne a few years back, what a locomotive, and such a short career, pity it's not in running order for heritage tours. Australian made too, we should be proud. Fantastic video, thank you.

    • @smitajky
      @smitajky ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It wouldn't be much use for heritage tours. There was only one track in Victoria that it was authorised for use on and two thirds of that track has been re gauged so that H220 could not run there anymore.

    Poor Harry. Reminds me of a caged up Blue Heeler that want's to go and herd wild cattle - the job he was bred for.
    Harry sitting like this is sad - like an old timer sitting in a nursing home staring out the window being deprived of everything he needs that gives him dignity.

      you are right. but remember that k class that hit a truck at benalla and was written off? its not worth the risk. another one needs to be built but it wont happen in our lifetimes. the problem with tracks not handling its heavy weight 70 years ago meant that the only track that could take it was the albury line and that line is no longer built to that axle loading. if it was converted to sg it could operate on the heavy duty coal lines in nsw or the iron ore lines in nw wa are rated to well over its weight. but they arent going to allow it to get in the way of their mineral trains.

    • @jimcrawford5039
      @jimcrawford5039 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It only ran on the N.E. main line due to it’s weight. Nowadays it could only go as far as Seymour.

    • @TheDemocrab
      @TheDemocrab 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@jimcrawford5039 These days, a lot of the infrastructure on the other lines around Victoria has been upgraded over time and there are some lines that can apparently handle the 23t axle load with specific restrictions in place because they already do so for cargo trains so it would have a fair few places it could go. The biggest problem with restoring the H class is the sheer costs involved which still stems from the size - It'd cost millions to get him running in the first place and the running costs would also be very high comparative to the revenue it'd bring, it's designed to haul the kinds of huge trains which simply aren't really all that common for heritage operators in Australia.
      The only way I could see it even being remotely financially viable is if a freight operator decided to do a UP heritage program style thing where it winds up in mainline freight service to "earn its keep" so to speak, but I'll put the likelihood of that happening up there with Phar Lap resurrecting himself and winning the next Melbourne Cup because of the whole BG vs SG thing with the H class not being convertible as far as I know.

    Has HH been moved from the Champion Rd Museum? I was 6 years old when my Grandfather took me there, even then he looked pretty sick. My fav loco from 60 years ago! Can't believe they got him going again

    A friends Dad drove this beast. At last the got a roof over They got a roof over it. Way too late I suspect . This should have been shifted away from Newport while they had the chance, instead they have rotted away with rust. I saw her in the early days of the museum , handle moved & the throttle did a bit. I still remember her being big. I was told I was too young to ever see her running. I did see some R’s & the steam engine that went to Yarram in the afternoon, that must have been the early sixties.

    What a great shame that this magnificent piece of Australian engineering is laying idol in a museum. If this was America, HH would be ploughing the rails as a rolling railway artefact of a great bygone era. Good video.

    • @darylcheshire1618

      I think Big Boy was restored by one of the railway companies, Heavy Harry's restoration would be a huge task to be undertaken by volunteers. (no support from business or government).
      It would have to be promoted as an apprenticeship or training scheme to attract funding and interest.
      There are some disadvantages, it will probably be too heavy to run on some lines and would be expensive in coal.
      I would love to see it actually running but I think many people would rather see it preserved in a museum rather than risk it running on the main lines.

    What class is the tank loco beside it?

    • @ianrx122
      @ianrx122 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      E class 0-6-2 shunting engine. Originally 2-4-2 for suburban passenger trains converted after the network was electrified. They do have one in original configuration in the museum.

  • @louiskats5116

    I live in Melbourne I should make the effort.
    Similar in looks to UP 484 Configuration & that has been on UP's rooster since WW II, never withdrawn from service.
    Lot's of 484's back on the rails in the states.
    If they can rebuild & get 4884 Big Boy back on the rails surely we can get HH back up & going.
    Are there any 484's currently on Aussie tracks

      Sadly, it’s impossible. This is due to the locomotives resting spot, where it is impossible to move it out of.
