    The silver cup and trinity worked the same ore body; (They didn't know it until they got to the top of the mountain) High grade silver/lead, next was copper and little gold. At the headwaters of the Gerard river. Cool spawning grounds. But, there are adits all the way from the top of the mountain to the bottom of the valley. Plus all the single drift miners camps/workings.
    Beautiful area. I cherrish the day that I stood on top of that mountain, looking down on the eagles flying. There was still year round ice, but I see that it looks like it is gone. It was so cool to see the water running thru the blue blue ice.
    If you are exactly where I think you are, you wont find any bats up there.
    You should (Or should have) been able to see the bug 'a boos too. At least some of them.

    Re: your wish to find a drift that exits on the other side of a mountain: I have seen a side view sketch of the Payne showing the drifts and raises and there appeared to be several that originated on the Sandon side of Payne Mt. and were open to the western leg of McGuigan gulch. There are the remains of a road down the east side that might still be accessable.
    More interesting might be an account I read that I can't recall where, that there's a quite long drift going through the mountain above the Silver Star and exiting above the drainage to Silverton. Memory suggests that was the Carnation mine. In Martin J Wells' "Tramway Titan the author states the " in 1925 the English Victoria Syndicate bought rights to the property and proceeded to drive a half mile tunnel to the western side of the mountain"
    If that were still open it would be a remarkable Sandon to Silverton bore. What a walk that would be.
    Thanks for all hat coverage of the Triune mines. I never made it much past the second switchback. I have however a book indicating the tram system there from the Triune to just short of Ferguson.

    • @exploringabandonedmines
      @exploringabandonedmines  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mike you are all over the place. You are commenting on a video at Trout lake far from Sandon. The Silver Star and Carnation are mines near Sandon but on the opposite sides of the valley from Mt. Payne

    • @choatelodge
      @choatelodge 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@exploringabandonedmines Stay with me, it'll make sense, I swear. :)
      In your voiced narrative while exploring the Triune mine (Trout lake) you mentioned that you'd like to see a mine that goes right through a mountain and out the other side (or I thought I heard words to that effect).
      In response I referenced a Sandon mine, the Payne, on the mountain of the same name. I can't remember at this moment just where is the sketch I saw that shows tunneling on several levels, most of which punch through to the east face of Payne. I mentioned it just as an example of a drift(s) going right through a mountain. I wish I could find that drawing.
      The other example I offered, the Carnation was as you say, on the opposite side of Sandon. I ought to have been more clear that in that case I was offering an entirely separate example to that of the Payne, of a mine that tunnels right through a mountain. (and in this case the tunnel is said to be half a mile long!)
      I've only seen a couple of references to it in books but it has intrigued me. I think I saw it's eastern end as being part of the Carnation mine, but I could well be mistaken.
      Again you've made a very good video on the Triune mine. That bull wheel for the tram was quite a find. Per 'Tramway Titan' that was a Riblet tram, completed in 1902 in 3 months for $20,000.
      Historian Milton Parent wrote of the tramway suffering tremendous difficulty with terrain and weather. "...An inspection team sent out in May found numbers 3 and 7 towers (of 8) had been carried away and in so doing the cable had jumped off the remaining towers and was in many places and for hundreds of feet, buried in snow..."
      In 1905 following the loss of the small feeder tram to another slide, the Triune mine was abandoned.
      Considering the filled bags you found, of unknown relative value ore, it sounds as though the miners might have counted on bringing the sacks down via tram and when this conveyance was lost they just said the hell with it, leave them where they lay, we're out of here. :) I imagine I would.
      I wonder if that strongly built platform you recorded wasn't the upper gantry structure for the tram bull wheel, and that an avalanche didn't hit one or more towers causing the cable to rip the bull wheel off its anchorage in mere seconds, like slamming a door to pull a tooth with fishing line?
      Oh to be a fly on the wall and to see that!
      Was the bull wheel at rest in a place that would support this idea?
      Thanks.

"But all the mines are down there." "No point in climbing a mountain range w/o hitting the peak, right?" "Why?" "Why, because it's there, of course!" "Onward & upward it is, then!" U never disappoint, Frank, & continually up yr game. Breathtaking, oft-inaccessible country, but if there's an adit up there, u'll sniff it out! Frank another hit out of the park with this one - - the scenery is just awesome and there seems to be considerable mineralization still remaining. I think you answered one of your first questions about how they dealt with the snow and the short season where the mines are actually accessible with the sacks you found. They mined and stored then shipped when the conditions allowed access. The colors inside the mine shafts were fantastic and while I imagine some want to see a fleck of gold in the quartz the beauty of this to me is someone chipped and chiseled these shafts by hand - - what you walked and crawled through in minutes someone took months if not years to carve out. Men lived and worked in primitive conditions without modern aids like the lights you were displaying. I've seen explorations where you found air powered jack hammers which are game changers when it comes to boring into a mountainside which makes you appreciate what the old time miners went through all the more. There is just something inspiring about unspoiled nature - - I commented before on my adventures in Arizona and finding old maps and trying to locate all kind of things on those maps that aren't on new maps from Indian ruins to mines to the remains of ghost towns and old homesteads - - of course hunting and just being out doors - - its the memories that are the real treasure. Too bad I didn't have the technology to record things back then but the video of the day was Super 8 movies and Polaroids for pictures

      You have gone to the places physically, that my mind wandered and wondered about. I'm a big explorer type, but I can tell my body energy would have halted and not gone where you did...lol. Thank you for sharing your amazing view.

    I really recommend checking out the Streamlight PROTAC HL® 5-X. It's got good output and great battery life. It runs on two 18650 button tops and has a wonderful rubberized grip.

    Hi Frank. Glad to see you are still at it. Missed exploring last year because of any injury sustained hiking into a mine. Missed this year for other reasons. Oh well, the mines around Peachland will still be there next year.

      Maybe Ron but will you be able to find them and explore them? They are collapsing every year!

      Finding them is usually not too big of a problem. If they are collapsed, oh well. At least I wasn't in it when it happened! It is a bit of a dangerous hobby.

    Thank you, Frank, for bringing myself, and others, such a beautiful video, of not only spectacular mine exploration footage, but gorgeous looking alpine-like scenery. I live in a small town (Maidstone, Kent) in the south of England, U.K. and seeing these sort of videos that you produce, makes for fascinating viewing. Keep up the great work my friend.

    I have to tell you Frank I’m really enjoying these videos. The colors inside this mine are amazing.

    That's wow country knockout view .. It makes me wonder how many months a year they could mine up at the altitude? Supplies in the winter months would be very difficult to bring in if even it could be done .. Bat monitors just gather up data of how many bat's flew into the mine ? I had never heard about them before or just what their use is .. Do you do Bat studies for science to help them by recording the numbers .. I just thought it was interesting ..It had to have been a very difficult task just to get the equipment up to the mine , no light weight equipment back then. Well done , i like this one , makes me want to go visit it ..
