- Radscorpions are a common creature you may have seen roaming the wasteland, either alone, or with several others. You may have also noticed their large size, or perhaps you heard them first, either scurrying to attack or emerging from the earth. Either way we can all agree that hearing their abrupt entrance is cause for concern. But why are they so large, where did they come from, and what uses do humans have for these oversized arachnids...

A scorpion wants to cross a river but cannot swim, so it asks a frog to carry it across. The frog hesitates, afraid that the scorpion might sting it, but the scorpion argues that if it did that, they would both drown. The frog considers this argument sensible and agrees to transport the scorpion. The frog lets the scorpion climb on its back and begins to swim. Midway across the river, the scorpion stings the frog anyway, dooming them both. The dying frog asks the scorpion why it stung despite knowing the consequence, to which the scorpion replies:
"I couldn't help it. It's in my nature".
A fine tale and a lesson for us all.

Meals produced utilizing rad scorpion venom, possibly the equivalent of puffer fish, that fish has a deadly poisonous component inside it that’d kill anyone consuming it.
Would there be any fallout lore to say “someone died eating ‘this type of food’, I guess they used too much radscorp venom on the dish?”
I gotta give bethesda some credit, they saw how radscorpions constantly glitch into the ground on fallout 3 and NV and decided to make it a feature that they burrow into the ground I do love that.

for the albino radscorpion, their overpowered stats may be a respons to their albanism, as any animal in nature knows a lack of camo is a sure way to get picked off first. so these scorpions quite literally have to b the bare-knuckle brawlers of their scorppion cousins
Its probably not so much a response as much as any radscorpion born albino who isnt a bare knuckle beater immediately dies.

Radscorpions are genuinely pretty terrifying in New vegas at low levels. They can 2 shot u and have one of the highest Damage Threshold.
Meh they are a piece of cake in New Vegas, heck i murder the Queen Radscorpion at level 9 with the 9mm smg
Nah they are pretty easy to kill on NV, Fo4 are even more deadly than deathclaws
It depends on your build in NV, but they are usually a threat early. Once you have one of the "premium" perks like Super Slam, And Stay Back!, Shotgun Surgeon, or Piercing Strike (really anything that knocks down or ignores some DT), they aren't very threatening anymore, but very few things are at that point on anything Normal and below, in my opinion.

These guys must’ve evolved a new system of breathing. Since modern Arthropods breath threw their skin and this really limits their size. It’s why during the carboniferous period they grew to their largest sizes, because of the increased amount of oxygen.
Maybe the effects from the fallout caused the atmosphere to mimic that period to a lesser degree. I don't know how but it's possible.
Maybe they developed lungs?

I believe You are slightly mistaken that Has to do with insects who respirate through their exoskeleton. Arachnids (most) actually have respiratory organs they have sets of book lungs , of which scorpion have four pairs. (Spiders actually use a combination of books lungs and their trachea For the respiratory functions)
As for limitations on size that is likely due to environmental factors such as predators, As well as the stress of shedding exoskeletons in the vulnerability while doing so.

For Fallout 4 Nuka World stuff, when I was in the Dry Rock Gultch employee area, I ended up standing on one of the forklift things to get away from the ghouls. They lost interest in me if they end up not being able to get me, so they go after my companion. But getting enough ghouls in one spot, it's pretty annoying the amount of damage that can rack up as you get bitch slapped right after the other.
Unfortunately some are well-programmed but in the wrong direction, fallout 4 deathclaws specifically are programmed to run around more instead of chasing and destroying you with non stop attacks

As someone who has owned scorpions I would say they more resemble Asian Forest scorpions in their behaviour.

On the venom, keep in mind that instead of injecting less than a drop of venom, the radscorpion would be flooding its victim with tablespoons to even possibly a quart of venom.
Perhaps not so much. Tablespoons maybe but venom is very very calorie intensive for creatures to manufacture. If they’re anything like real creatures they won’t do a full dump of the venom sac unless they feel threatened or afraid.

No-Bark Noonan took many radscorpion stings to the skull. He's doing pretty good considering he had so much venom in him.

I remember my first time seeing a Bark Scorpion in New Vegas. It was a small swarm and they nearly killed me as I was low level and only had a 9MM Pistol.

Lucky. The first time I saw a radscorpion was when I barely started out the game and I saw a fucking giant radscorpion by the little valley near Goodsprings. Right by cazador alley. I obviously died fighting it because it was way too close to be able to run away from.
Well we all know Cazador takes the crown from one of the hellish creatures to encounter.

Fo3/FNV ones at least have decency to fight you above ground. Fo4 ones have scare the crap out of me appearing out of nowhere. Especially when I was peacefully enjoying the scenery.
They can also do a lot of damage even when you’re in power armor.

In fo4 i used mod to remove the ability to burrow from most creature because instant teleportation is bullshit

I swear I once had an encounter of a young radscorpion getting chased by a deathclaw. Ended up getting the deathclaw’s attention and the little guy got away.
Cue two weeks later on the same play through and a radscorpion shows up during a fight with jackals and then just, leaves me be.
Rad scorpion had a life Dept, now your equal.

One of my arachnologist friends told me that Scorpions actually have two "chambers" to their venom glands with different chemicals that are mixed as they're pushed through the stinger. Food made from Radscorpion Venom glands possibly make careful use of keeping the two chemicals separate, or the cooking process (Either heat or dilution) reduce its efficacy as a venom. It's been said that Ruby's Radscorpion Venom Casserole is perfectly safe to eat, "Unless you've got a sore in your mouth for the venom to find your blood, then it'll kill you dead", but I personally think that in a post-war world where dental hygiene and medical knowledge are both much more scarce, I think perhaps the more plausible explanation for deaths related to radscorpion venom based foods is an allergic reaction. A lot of wastelanders wouldn't have perfect teeth, some might have stress-induced ulcers in the stomach, etc.

It's like a right of passage for the big bug bastards of bethesda games to give me nightmares for some reason.
I was camped on a ledge with a sniper rifle, targeting a raider off in the distance, when I turned around after they ducked behind cover, I came face to face with a giant radscorpion who had apparently managed to sneak up behind me and was winding up for a tail strike while I was scoped in.
they are ambush predators for a reason, arachnids when it comes to life don't fuck around.
better hope that sniper was an anti material rifle & you filled it full of lead.

I always kept a dart gun in my inventory while playing 3 because a couple shots were enough to cripple anything and made dealing with deathclaws much easier. It was sad that they weren't added to later games.
In NV we got the flare gun it kinda helps with fighting deathclaws

A rad scorpion was my first big enemy I had to face in fallout 4 and that was the first time I ever played so I had no idea they existed needless to say I almost died if it wasnt for jumping onto the train

@@samuelginting3213 instead of player level scale base i wish it to be place base instead. Like in new vegas, some place have easy mobs that you can kill at any level and it wont scale, and some place that have hard mobs that impossible to pass at low level. It gave you a sense of progress, to see how strong or weak your character are.

Maybe the venom isn’t diluted or strengthened, they,re just producing more of the same due to their size and therefore the dosage is greatly increased.

@@theira9663 exactly! They were annoying and memorable, but they were numerous so they were just an occupational hazard. They always were a plot point; youd kill them to make antidotes. They uses to have a purpose and place in the grand scheme of things, now they are just minibosses

Queen radscorpion one one the more terrifying encounters in any of my fallout games.
They also must have mutated to breath differently as unless Co2 levels in the fallout universe are at levels not seen in even the carboniferous period, which given the state of almost all plant life we see in the US would make that impossible, they’d all suffocate before getting that big due to how they intake oxygen
It'd be cool if they let you use the complete stinger or claws in weapon making like they do with Deathclaw gauntlets.
I mean, Manis and yau guai gauntlets were a thing in new Vegas, so I wouldn't be surprised if they're added in the future.

if the Radscorpion has developed a strong exoskeleton there must be a way that the exoskeleton under the bad weight limit can kill the scorpion that have to protect but maybe the exoskeleton was creating a balance betwen a weight and a protection that might explain why small callibers cant damage them but stronger weapons and explosives can damage then so maybe they were prepare for the pre war

I have a love/hate relationship with the giant insects of Fallout... I love that they're out there, but I hate running into them. The amount of times I've had to hide on the roof of some derelict building trying to lure these MFs out by running around on the ground and quickly running back. ... why no spiders though? I always thought they'd make a wonderfully horrifying addition.
Radscorpions are one of my favorite animals in the FO universe, both the lore and the looks.
However, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the game designers that they did not take one of my pets and mutate it into the game...
It is a Lasiodora Parahybana, seeing a 2 meter tall version of that thing would be absolutely terrifying.

I was just relaxing, exploring the area and then I got ambushed by a Radscorpian. I unloaded my entire gatling laser into it.
I died.

I love the FO4 mod that lets you use captured critters as secondary companions, and the Radscorpions are some of the best you can bring along. They might be a bit too large for indoors, however…

Was playing 4 at a friend's house once, I walked into a shack of some kind and got jumped by one. Scared the crap out me it was like a literally jumpscare.
I like to think before they became that big that they were just as big but the stinger was still smol like a funny pp joke

I know you did a video on the FEV, but I have to ask. Was the nuke that hit the facility a direct hit, or was it only kinda close? A direct hit would imply some impressively durable construction, and the FEV wouldn’t have survived the blast if the containment had cracked during the strike, would it?
The facility was directly hit with a nuke but it didn’t blow up it was a dud but the FEV was able to leak out of the facility from having a huge hole in. The only reason it didn’t make supermutants was because it was heavily diluted from mixing with the water and rain and because the radiation from the leaking nuke and the other nukes ruined it making the more extreme effects mitigated but the wildlife bathed in it unlike the wastelanders that protected themselves from the elements

There are so many terrifying creatures in the wasteland, most of which come from FEV
I don't know if I would argue that the poison necessarily grew any more lethal on its own ad part of the evolution. It could have, sure, but I always figured that it was more a matter of the sheer amount such s much more massive specimen would be able to freely inject you with in a single sting. Couple that with the increased force behind the strike, not a simple scratch you may not notice, but a full on hit, stronger than most people could punch you with given the levels some of these possess, so it already will cause some internal bleeding, the poison enters your system much quicker through these more naturally grievous wounds. In new Vegas, the woman makes the dishes out of the stingers saying you are fine to eat them with the caviar that you don't have any open sores in you on it's way down. Meaning that perhaps whatever type of venom it is has to enter your bloodstream or otherwise not be terribly effective against the mucus lining of your various insides on it's way to being digested. Given that we also don't know her cooking techniques or other ingredients we can't argue that you are virtually swallowing pieces of a stinger or whole, coated in something like the jalepeno in cream cheese inside of a popper, or something else that could effect the composition of the poison you could be ingesting. Poison could be simply poured out and are eating the sac itself for all we know.
As far as combat goes, landmines are pretty effective and crippling their many legs so they can't chase you but you can pick them off from behind where they can no longer reach youwith bits of wood and rocks and the collective will of everyone who has also been griefed by the albino ones in fallout 3. No longer needed the experience as I was max level, not worth the experience, resource gain/loss but simply living and let living isn't good enough for some people apparently, is it? Was literally punching some deathclaws to death but trying to just go around these annoying pests. Bet you can't tell that wasn't my first choice in describing them, can you?

I run a Fallout DnD game and almost half of my players are terrified of bugs and spiders. So, in my game I created "The Great Radscorpion Wars" where molerats eradicated all the Radscorpions in the area.
