The film let the Police off pretty lightly, but then their more depraved behaviour probably couldn't be shown in the cinema, even today.

This was a film based on a British/Irish situation that was made for an international audience.
Good though it is, there were some great British-made TV dramas made about The Troubles, aimed primarily at a domestic audience: Harry's Game, for instance, is a great drama that was first shown on TV in 1982 and is available to watch on TH-cam.

As a movie plot one might mistake it as being a bit far fetched, which makes it even more surreal, because it's real. Edit: Apart from being a cellmate of his dad, I mean 'as if' and other things you mentioned but the factual story itself is bizarre enough.
