- Gerry Conlon spoke in Trinity College in 2013 on the invitation of Afri, where he met and expressed his support for the family of Chelsea Manning (then known as Bradley). His rousing and inspirational speech on the important role of whistleblowers, fighting for justice and the need to stand up to powerful forces was one of his last public appearances before his death the following year at the age of 60.
Gerry's words ring as true today as they did on the evening he spoke them as Julian Assange and Chelsea Manning still languish in prison. As Julian Assange's health is deteriorating rapidly everyday there is an urgent need to spread this message.
Gerry's wrongful conviction in 1974 of bombing a Guildford Pub led to him and three others being imprisoned for 15 years, he watched his father die in the same prison, his only crime being that he travelled to Britain to bring his innocent son home. This film is dedicated to all innocent prisoners around the world.
For over four decades Afri has been involved in opposing war, promoting food sovereignty and tackling climate change - working especially with Secondary and Third level students as well as with the general public. We organise the annual Famine Walk in Mayo, a Hedge School in TU Blanchardstown and Féile Bríde in Kildare.

What people probably do not understand is that they were put in prison NOT to try and stop the bombing,but more likely to help it continue,MI5 would have knew they were innocent as did the police,but they jailed them knowing full well the actual bombers were still out there.He was not a spy,he was a puppet without knowing it
@@khutt19 Indeed possible but there is a direct connection to my minor argument with him in 1993 and the subsequent kidnapping organised by Crown agent Yves Carlo William from 1997 - 2007, knowing how deeply these people are entrenched and the lengths will they go to to establish authenticity, which I eye witnessed, and the fact it was referenced by the lunatic William ongoing in subliminal abuses from 2013,, he was in on it with the promised and delivered payoffs. I also checked this with someone involved with the other bombing in Birmingham, who emphatically stated that Crown agents were manipulating the entire IRA show.
Controlled opposition, actors, are very heavily used, and are usually very convincing, he was exploiting girls in 1993 whilst the movie was being prepared.
UK is just a sinister crooked regime riddled with nepotism/cronyism and symbolism.

Gerry was my friend. I invited him to speak at the Meeting for Peoples' Friendship in Italy in 2014. Unfortunately he passed away without having the chance to do it. Rest in Peace, Gerry mo chara 💚🙏

I can never imagine the trauma experienced by Gerry, his father and their friends, but as a survivor of pen 3 of the Leppings Lane terrace of Hillsborough I can whole heartedly attest to the power and corruption within the police, the justice system and government of this country! People need to speak up and never be silenced by the elite few who believe they are the chosen few
And yet it is all happening again, in the worst possible way, and people just won't see it. Somehow people have forgotten and now believe that government and authority figures only tell the truth and want what's best for us. It couldn't be farther from the truth!

I was a 19-year-old Irish man working in Bank of Ireland in Queen Street in 1991. I went out to get a sandwich for lunch and just happened to be passing the Old Bailey as the Birmingham 6 were being released. There were loads of people waving Irish flags but I had no clue what was going on until I got home and saw it on the evening news! A great day for the parish ;-)

Don't believe what Conlon says he is a liar. I've seen him in another video suggesting that the Judge at his appeal admitted he was innocent but was going to keep him in prison anyway because he might know who did? Conlon is a liar.

Obviously most books will give you a far more comprehensive retelling, however iirc, the movie did stay true to the framework of the overall story, it's been a while since I watched it but Daniel Day Lewis & the supporting cast are amazing, it's a tough watch, but worth it.

What about the Birmingham 21 and the Guildford 5 ?Or don't they count? The Birmingham 6 were returning from an IRA funeral in Ireland so if they wanted to be cleared they should of asked their Provo mates to hand over the real culprits instead of constantly whinging about British justice.

In any case, the Guildford 4 were stitched up by the police and CPS (Crown Prosecution Service) in a string of knee-jerk arrests following attacks by the Provisional IRA (a splinter group of the original organisation). They confessed following beatings and torture - illegal in Britain. Even after realising the group were innocent, the police tried to cover up their mistake lest their misconduct become public knowledge. Police services in the UK had a horrible tendency to cover up or obstruct any investigation into their own conduct in this period. The situation has improved with the Independent Police Complaints Commission, but in recent years Home Secretaries have once again sought to immunise the security services from public scrutiny, with varying degrees of success.

I watched "In the Name of the Father" when it first came out... I watched it again today. My feelings - although more mature - are still the same. Disgust at corrupt government in ANY country but especially, as I am Irish, disgust at what went on back then and what goes on to this day in many areas of government.
As Gerry (RIP) said, what happened was not a "miscarriage" of Justice... it was DELIBERATE.

What an amazing person to survive what he did. I’m in awe of him. And as someone who detests the PR formulated speeches of today, it’s so wonderful to see someone speak to eloquently from the heart, from sheer conviction and experience.
There's no reason to be in awe of him. He was an alleged victims of a miscarriage of justice who gives public speeches inciting hatred against British people. There is nothing to be in awe of about that.

Just seen interview of Belfast man Brian keenan by Gay Byrne back in 1990 . He look liked he was released from a concentration camp . Skinny and malnushered . Brian was held hostage for 5 years in Beriut. The Birmingham six at least looked fit and healthy when released despite been treated badly by very crupt legal and prison system .

met him when he was on remand ( maybe 1986 norwich prison).....YOU KNOW when someone is innocent,i cant say WHAT it is - but he struck me as clean ...so i followed his case - found him on twitter.The thing is if he said yeh i did it ...hed be paroled next year,hes done 5 years more than his original life sentence . Anyone who would stick to that HAS A STORY .... ill support him no worries

@@celticmist14 It was his own family that planted the evidence that keeps him in jail today - 35 years as an innocent man. Ask Paddy Hill if he thinks he's guilty - they were in jail together in the early 90's. He was also in jail with Gerry Conlon and Paul Hill - all of whom thought him innocent. That alone is good enough for me - though there is now a mountain of irrefutable evidence as well.

I'm embarrassed to be British. The government has so questions to answer its bewildering. This man and the many without a voice are the real heroes. Yet history is ignored by some as they have blood-soaked hands. Expect nothing from your government as that is what they deliver.
