Great tutorial! love your content Natalie!! I’ve made a lot of granny squares in my time and I shout about the double magic ring from the rooftops BUT I would advise caution if you want to use any sort of magic ring for a granny square blanket, even a double one. The centre of the granny square is the weakest point of the square and if you want a blanket with longevity use a chain ring instead. then when you weave your end in run it round those centre stitches to close up the centre hole and reinforce it back and forth several times. I usually recommend a chain 4 or chain 5 ring is fine for most people. I have an 11 year old granny blanket and none of the ends have come loose and the centres are still perfect and not even opened up a little. The double magic ring is perfect for amigurumi and other items where you want a low bulk centre so I do use it regularly, and if I do use it for the centre of a square I make sure the centre is reinforced alot! However, I also shout from the rooftops that there is no right or wrong in crochet, just preferences for different techniques! So you do you ❤
Great tutorial. You foresee the possible mistakes one could made and explained those grey areas. Not in the other tutorials I encountered and actually had a longer loop left after i closed in. Only when I watched your tutorial I could get the magic ring close properly with both loop securely tight. Thanks a lot. U are a great teacher with crystal clear instructions.❤
Thank you for this! Super clear tutorial & makes it easy to understand how to work & close it. I usually do a single magic ring but always leave a few inches to hide a single knot, weave in zig-zag back & forth, hide another loop or single knot and weave in 2 more directions. It sounds like a lot but it's worked really quickly because I've performed this on over 50 scrapghan squares already. Either this method or double magic ring, the weave in is key!
I do the same as a previous comment. I do the original single magic ring loop. I leave enough tail so that when I’m done, I use a yarn needle & run the tail around through the ring & out through the next couple of double crochet rows. The end result is a “double magic ring”. I find this easier than holding & crocheting over 2 loops at the start.
I love this tutorial! Slow movement and thorough explanations are amazing. I started out as a knitter in high school. I decided to teach myself to crochet a few years back, I find it’s more comfortable for my wrist with tendonitis and more enjoyable for me personally.
Thanks Natalie. I had multiple granny square failures occur after all were being joined into the final blanket. What a mess :( Will do this for sure next time!
I had this exact issue, I had an entire blanket ruined. It’s exactly why I just went straight back to the chain version. But I might try this version to go back to the magic ring.
I'm confused. Why did we stop using the chain four and join into a ring method? I was lucky enough to beat up this way by my great-grandmother and blankets if she made with it are still laying on my children's beds. They've never come apart.
It’s just a different method of making the ring. I’ll use this way if I do amigurumi, but for granny squares I too will stick to the traditional ‘chain 4 and join with a slip stitch’ method as I find it more secure.
I was today years old when I learned that... some idiots don't double loop. Excuse me, I'm sorry, that was rude. I'll try again... I was today years old when I learned that some people don't value their time 'n effort - and skill - or those to whom they intend to bestow all of this upon by not double looping. Also, I was today years old when I realized that there even was such a thing as a single loop magic ring.

thanks for taking the time to make the left-handed tutorial!
Thank you so much! I must have watched 10 videos before finding yours showing the single crochet into the ring and what to do with the tail!
I have watched a couple of videos on this, and yours is the only one I have been able to follow. Thank you very much! 😅

I make a single ring, and then I sew the remain yarn around and around in the "ring". Easy 😊 Greetings from Susan, Denmark 🇩🇰
Me, too

I tend to do it the old fashioned way and join up a chain 4.
I initially learned it that way too. The magic ring is nice if you have the patience to learn because it cinches / tightens up really cleanly.
Just what I needed!!! Thank you. Faster and more stable. 😊
Excellent tutorial!! Thank you!
Thank you for showing me this it's been driving me crazy to get this right, now I've got it thank-you to you. X
Hooray! Happy to help!

Thank you very very much ❤️ God bless you 💝
I had this happen also. It was a cardigan and I sewed the rings with another length of yarn. Not a really good method. Thanks for sharing this. 🌺
This tutorial is so nice and great for beginners! Love all your tutorials but this one is our favorite! 🥰
Terrific. I use this method to begin knitting in the round too
Happy Easter!
Thank you for the step by step.
Useful technique! Thanks for sharing x
Thank you so much

I so loved watching your tutorial. Would you also use this on a musselburgh hat?
Personally I just do the single but when I go to weave in the ends I first go one way then switch direction of my of my end. Hope this makes sense.
I also do a double ring. I learned from MJ’s Off The Hook Designs here on TH-cam and hers is much easier!! 😘
It’s so complicated, I just wrap the yarn 3 times around my pointer, hook through the first 2 loops, grab the third and have the circle created

Nice!
I can tell you’re primarily a knitter. You ‘throw’ your working yarn rather than ‘hook’ it. No biggie, just an observation.
