I was recently introduced to your channel and have been loving your podcasts. As an Expat and someone still in the early stages of settling in Germany, I find the experiences you share very insightful and provide great perspective! It is also comforting to acknowledge that I am not the only one feeling that the language barrier in Germany can sometimes truly impact your self-esteem.

Even when most Germans understand and speak decent English and it will work for a vacation trip, you should not underestimate the importance of German in Germany.
If the person asks to speak English that is fine, but if you have elderly or very young people at the table, they are not fine with English.
So best connection is simply a club for sports, singing, playing cards, whatever as there are like minided people and you have the option to speak German.
Just don't stick to a small group, where you don't need to improve your language skills.

60 years ago my beneration was amongst the first who had to learn two additional languages at school. I hated it and did just what I had to do to pass the tests. Six years later I decided to go to the USA as an exchange student. My English was horrible, and I sat in school with 8th grade students for English. The other subject I took 11th grade (like I would have in Germany). The first two weeks, I carried a "Langenscheidt" with me to check for words I did not understand (no mobiles or tablets in the 70s!. That did not work out. Then I switched to asking the people around me. That led to me getting a bunch of words explained because in order to explain the one word, they used more words I did not know. Or they tried to trick me. I still recall some boy trying to get me to use the word "skinny-dipping". The big advantage, though, was to learn the words in a context. Sometimes, I did not even know how to express the same thing in German.
If you visit another country for some time, immersion is the way to go. The Romans once said: "per aspera ad astra", it is a hard way, but the result is worth it.

As an adult, you are a lot worse off than when visiting Germany than visiting as an exchange student. Exchange students usually spend the first few weeks learning basic phrases in German and at the same time learning about differences in customs. The exchange organisations take care of that. Most of the people doing these seminars have gone through the same process themselves, and no possible pitfalls very well.

Did you just say you had to do an integration course as an American or Canadian? Because if you are married to a German, you don't have to. If not, then of course. I know what I am talking about, because my wife is American and they tried to send her to a 600h integration course, which I had to let them know that she is NOT required to do that, or the language course for that matter.

Girls, please adjust your sound/microphones. Quiet to loud and vice versa changing every 15 seconds. Hannah you are too quiet (in comparision) in almost every video.
