I e just started BDO, and so far I’m enjoying it, it’s been pretty confusing, esp since I play on console(ps5). So if Warframe is suppose to be bad, then maybe BDO will be “bad” too, lol.

Most important of all the developers actually care about the game and release meaningful content and quality of life updates consistently.

This is an incredibly well thoughout and presented video discussing specific problems but also themes we've seen forever. It'll be worse for not having you, but deciding when we will trade less of our lives for that which we've already conquered and that which has become mundane is the hard choice many never face. they have been this close for 3 or 4 years now but lets be real, its just about time to let go. who knows, maybe in a year or two we all come back together in BDO 2.0 when pearl abyss managed to get rid of the people holding them back.

Thanks for the video. It's been really interesting watching such an informed opinion of the game and hearing how some things worked at the start. Also, it looks like someone in pearl abyss has indeed started to play the game because many of the problems you talk about have been tackled this year, specialty progression and quality of life changes, the only thing left would be pay to convenience but there's no chance that will change soon.

When devs finally decided to increase the drop chance for the caphras stone, people literally started to say it's now too easy to get it, saying 'You can get this many caphras stones if you grind 10 hours everyday for a year. ONLY 10 hours! Devs ruined the game.'
Many new players have complained about things. But those royal players always criticized them. 'Young people thesedays don't have a strong will. They just wanna get everything without even trying. When I was young, I had to put my life in a danger to afford a meal! Sigh... Young bloods don't even know what No pain, no gain means.'
This was a great watch. You are correct on a LOT of this in this video and it really made me question why I am spending my time in this game after all.

They can get away with their bad bussiness practices Becuase of streamers like you who spend way too many hours in the game and gives bdo free advertising to casuals who see this streamers make gains and they think they too can make this gains, without accounting for the hours streamers put in.

Thank you for sharing - i'm totally with you on that and i lost the believe too and start to question, what should i hope for in the future .. and after seeing they implementation of a Dungeon it just feels like the devs for those parts and the manangement are out of their mind. I was thinking to put out a video on all thoses flaws but well build things too - but it would just end up in a rant i presume. For me, the RNG progression was always the BS part of BDO that I will never get over. Forget about pvp and desync, I never got to that part. I was always stuck at tryin to enhancing for pen until you realize that you are way below average. That's when you know the game doesn't respect your time and its time to move on.

After replaying a few segments, I'm honestly glad you made this vid. Few of the things you mentioned are things I didn't even know about - and thats coming from someone who carefully considered playing this game, watching it carefully after the cron melting started. I definitely won't be playing it nor streaming it anymore. I only played it to prove that its possible to get geared without swiping. No need to anymore if that many " cheaters " are allowed to roam freely.

I can tell you from first hand experience most developer's do not play the games they work on. The number of developer's I met that didn't play games at all was astounding.
I remember the good old days playing BDO grinding nagas for 10 mil/hr because I wasn't geared enough to join the hotshots at pirates making 20m, listening to your stream and you joking about enhancement windows, speculating about hidden stats, etc. Just a fun little fond memory I wanted to share!

This is fair and accurate IMO. An amazing game, which has its beauty and combat eclipsed only by its neglect for players time and number of greedy little screwups and annoyances. I spent half of my time in the map screen doing worker and resource management--I agree this was one of the better parts of the game. It's like a little simulation game within an mmo.
Great video Morrolan! I still remember studying your vids way back in the day. Sad to see you go but damn if you don't Speak the Truth. I hope the devs at PA will see this and take it to heart. It would be amazing if you found your way into the AoC or New World dev team, foreal. Literally right after I watched this video a couple weeks ago, PA started pumping out those QoL content...No joke, from the scroll combination feature, inventory search, to now we're getting bs->fs exchange. They all happened.
Just learned that they added the on/off switch system for white scroll duration in test server.

I'm keeping BDO because of sunk cost fallacy. Too much time, too much money in to just leave, on top of having a mountain of goals and wanting to see the rest of the map. I am just about to enter the BDO world and looking for some review videos then came along yours, and I thank you for such in-depth view.
I can follow you in almost all subjects, you explain everything so good.
Man you really made me miss the good old days. I've been playing before the NA close beta in the kr server and switched to NA server. I still remember the excitement of finding a good fishing hot spot and I would keep it a secret and only share it with my best friends. I still remember the struggle to find a rotation for underwater gathering and setting up the whole rotation with trading skill, small elephant and boat. And I still remember the lakiaro farming and trying to get my tet manos hoe. Also the pre awakened pvp, much more room to maneuver and kite and now, it's just a one combo contest. And the horse training used to be my favorite life skill but now with the t10 update, it seems getting better horse is not about horse training at all. Tbh, I had little to no gear back then but I was having so much fun. Now with so much gear, I don't even know why I need them any more. I tried to quit bdo many times but eventually I came back because there is just nothing like bdo on the market. Even though I don't play bdo as actively as before, deep down in my heart, I still want to believe it can one day go back to the super fun and super exciting game that I loved before. I genuinely hope that you find passion in another game and good luck!

The game has gone on for too long.. The fun of the journey/discovery is gone since there's no new world to explore in the game... You see the amount of "effort" put into the "expansions" and its obvious the devs just don't care anymore. Calph buildings vs. Otraxxia is the visual representation of that.
Seems to me like you really poured your heart and soul into the thoughts and opinions given in this video. Just got to the end of your video and I can dig it brotha. Most of your sentiments I share almost to the letter with DE and Warframe. Played that game for sometime and I only hop on to get a frame, level it, tell my friends my thoughts on it then never touch until the next one.
I always find these vids funny because before even starting the video, you can already think of some actual reasons to leave. And it's like points that virtually everyone can agree on. It's rather how much you can tolerate it that separates the players.

i think youre exaggerating a bit. while the majority of the points he makes are elaborate and reasonable, saying that karma doesnt reduce griefing isnt really valid. he said it himself: we dont want to risk getting penalized for dying with negative karma. just because you can karmabomb someone and abuse the system doesnt mean there arent other scenarios where it doesnt function as intended. though, i do agree that the scenarios where it functions as intended are so scarce that it is in dire need of a rework, considering how easy it is to abuse. and for the other reasons johnny sins points out.

I made it through the whole video \o/ On a serious note though I found this really sad to watch. Although I've known of you for a very long time I only recently "discovered" you through the podcasts and started lurking in your stream. It is tough to listen to negative stuff about the game all the time but I must admit I agree with pretty much everything you said 100%, and it is a shame to think of BDO now and back in 2016. Sometimes I wonder how different and better it could be if they took the game in another direction because it always had so much potential, and as you said just misses the mark. Really sad to see you're taking a break but I wish you all the best and hope you find your love and passion for the game again one day
This has been along time coming. I've always enjoyed your criticisms of this game. This will be a good 2 hours I bet. Thanks for putting this together and posting.
Watched the whole thing, really well thought out and relatable. One thing I would add would be UI and general engine performance. Some party spots have drops from ~120 FPS to ~20 and turning off your UI gives like 30 extra FPS, why? Because its not optimised, other games does not have UI performance problems so why does BDO. Personally I would love them to take a break from all development of content and literally just make the game run smoother in any way possible for a few weeks.
Oluns is one of those group spots that you could literally die due to fps drops or stutters. For no reason. Even if you have a beefy computer everyone in the group still stutters and their fps drops at the same time. I died due to this and of course I sent out a ticket and my friend told me they'll just copy paste the same message they sent him. Yup, he was right. My friends response is literally the same but they just replaced the name of the crystals. I lost an elkarr and a viper due to stutters and dying in .
"optimized" is a buzzword for people who have no idea what goes into game programming and development... thanks for signaling to us not to take you seriously at all.

I'm someone who used to play this game way back in 2018 on a tamer (i got to level 60 i believe) and i thought about coming back to this game to see what it's like after 4 years, i've heard from some people in other games that bdo has become less p2w ever since the ownership changed hands, safe to say that this video answered my questions and showed me that the gripes i had with the game back then still exist in the game today and I'd just like to thank you for saving me the frustration of seeing this all over again myself.

same for me too.. but that why i like this game. i just comeback after long breaks and enjoy the game.. feel like streamers dont have this option and they play for years and get burnt out.
I agree with everything you said and I started playing BDO in 2016 on PC. I moved to BDO console in 2019. Nothing has changed when fixing the most crucial issues and watching the Pearl Abyss update videos on TH-cam and just like wow... they don’t know what’s going ever and throw out excuses to not fixing or why it’s so hard to fix something when other big mmo have the same issues but actually fix them instead of making excuses on why the issue hasn’t been fixed. I doubt them playing the game will motivate them to fix it, it looks more like they just don’t want to fix it.

When I start playing a bit too much this game, I always remember again the same little detail to keep distance:
The dim tree spirit armor icon is the treant armor, and actually the green camouflage outfit model. But they replaced dim tree appearance as a last minute fix to look ugly and force outfit purchase.
Kind of sum it up for me each time. A nice game at first and in idea, distorted by management and marketing.
But still having fun and playing casual.

We have a saying in Game Design: ideas are cheap
Meaning you can have the best ideas in the world, they mean nothing if you can't lead your team to actually execute them properly
And I feel like BDO has this "great ideas executed poorly" syndrome we see more and more in modern games with heavy monetisation.
They aren't executed poorly because of incompetence (well... most of the time anyway), but because executing them too well would hurt the bottom line
The problem is they have to put a solution in pearl shop for every content "for the people who dont have time to play" and it killed bdo greed and no true content like he said just something else harder to enhance console everyone sell outfits so it will never change this free pen boss gear is about best it gets
Yep, I always thought that there was a team that came up with amazing ideas, systems, QoL improvements, etc., and then there was another team that tried to figure out how to strip all those ideas down to the bare minimum in their implementation so that they can monetize the rest.
Holy crap, I just made a video reviewing the game and in my critique section I have a list very similar to your reasons for quitting! Glad I'm not the only one who listed the desync issue especially with PvP, terrible enhancement system, and poor endgame content. I think this game has massive potential, it just needs to fix these issues as you've listed especially the monetization, that one is by far the most egregious imo.

Enhancing is old and boring. It can be exciting but ultimately still needs reworked. Not completely changed just reworked. We are talking about a game that has been out for like a long time that has gotten hardly any adjustments. A good game changes as it progresses through the years because that’s how you keep a game alive. If they just keep asking for money they will continue to keep a small player base and they may receive a paycheck but it’ll never have 1m players if they don’t want to make the game appeal to everyone. Nobody except for you and people like you are going to sit there and smack stacks mindlessly all day long. It’s so boring and tedious and not everyone makes a living doing it. You gotta think 98% of people playing this game aren’t getting paid. We actually need time to enjoy as much of the game as possible for the time we do have. We can’t just play a game to hate our lives when we aren’t at work. We already have enough of that so #MakeBDOGreat it’s already an established game and I think it can do better. It can make money and do better as a game and then it’ll make even more money. The devs would be dumb to not watch this whole video and change the way they think about the game entirely and then act on it.

I feel like they need to revamp a lot in this game. Like the more hours you put in for something hard to get like the hp pot the higher the drop rate becomes after x amount of hours. Taking 100+ hours for most is just ridiculous.
I saw this comment 4 months ago, started the health potion grind, and finished it yesterday. Dunno why but yeah thx for the motivation.
This is why i have been shifting more to FF14, you know the devs listen and implement good changes and you feel like you're time is not wasted through more deterministic methods as opposed to pure rng in bdo (EVEN PVP IS RNG)

This video needs to be seen by the whole dev group. Your words are literally the same as mine about this game. Every time I would die by a worse player than me using a meta class would make me quit some days but when I "quit" im itching to get back and I hated it. Theres nothing out there I would wanna play except like COD but for like 30 mins for fun and then hop back in bdo and run around orcs for hours. I put about $400 into getting my T9. It was game changing. I don't play BDO any longer. It is a time trap and a money pit. Very unrewarding game for all the work you will put in.

If anything, you playing stuff you think will be good for the channel will help improve it. Although watching you talk about BDO is interesting, BDO itself is not a good game to watch, despite the likelihood of people who like to spend money coming to the stream. I loved your video. Playing BDO since 2016 and I learned so much in your video not 100 guides not 200hours of tutorials could have shown me. I knew all those things somewhere somehow, it was always in the brackground, but players always called them just rumors or nothing you can prove. But some of us knew always it was there. Like hidden stats, weird stats, wrong calculations, buffs not working, greedy monetisation models, tedious p2w content, ect.....

Honestly, I'm glad I left and went onto other games. The only thing I don't like about FF right now is lack of decent PvP. We just need a good MMO with BDO's combat system. They can scrape all the rest including the gear progression that's been literally built around P2W.
sad to see, but understood, left the game for all same reasons at the new year, havent been tempted to come back yet.

I haven't played bdo for a few years now but it's been my 2nd favorite mmo ever and a game I played at the highest level for years. Hopefully it improves for the ones still playing. I don't have the time to play multiple games anymore so it has been phased out for me. I'll always love bdo.
I think they got to a point where the fact that people invest a crazy amount of money in their game got to their head, so they just try their best to milk while they can as long as people still care about the game after that they will probably shut it down or smt.

When the motivation of a great game turns from passion to corporate greed, I feel that the issues pointed out are inevitable. They are literally carrying out the mcdonalds strat by aiming to be just barely "good enough". I dont think they're being lazy. Im sure they analyze which content brings out the most revenue per man hour spent and since new players or players that play new characters bring in the most bang for the buck, they're perfectly content with the player base go thru a constant revolving door, new and old as long as their bottom line is padded. The intro to the heidel ball was more like a press conference earnings call than speaking to the player base. to be honest, since the previous balls when they announced they had plans 10-20 years down the line, it was already blatantly obvious they were gonna milk the game for every cent they could long term even if it meant obliterating its existing loyal player base.
The big thing you miss in your take on overhauling enhancing is the fact that the systems are boring and tedious on purpose. That is the goal of the developer. You can't just "fix" something that is intended, something that is foundational to their ideal of how to make money. It is slow and boring and click intensive to twist your arm to buy artisans. You have to do all this bullshit busywork, so they dangle a cash skip for a secondary related bullshit busywork system. Should I sit there and watch another 100 hours of memory fragment scroll animations, should I just spend a bil on frags, or should I just give them their $1000? They make you have to think about that choice for a reason, and it all hinges on the system being horrible to use.
Do artisan memories even save that much time when you are building a 250stack? Like the problem here isn't resource acquisition, it is literally clicking an npc for hours on end to click the enhance button on white gear for hours on end.
They could make way more money by monetizing a system that would allow you to speed fail stack because more people would be open to participating in it.
The system was designed for a completely different game effectively. You wouldn't fail stack past 100 for like the first year or two the game was out. now you need to consistently get a fail-stack over 250 to progress. with how the system works your looking at hours and hours to have the option of progressing.
@@samuelmeskill9166 You're missing the connection. Person A has unlimited resources and can click all day. This person does not need artisans. They have to deal with a bad system designed to force person B who does need artisans to pay keep pace. A good 0.0001% of the player base has resources on Morrolan's scale. Pearl Abyss isn't trying to grease Morrolan for $10,000 to hit AP, it's the 99.999% of the player base who doesn't play as a career. If stacking was simple, gearing would be simple. They're looking for profits bottom up. You can't see the perspective of someone who wants to compete but can't grind 100 hours a week. When I was in a siege guild, half the guild was swiping 50,000 pearl boxes a week to push an AP edge, then they just started replacing everyone who didn't do that.
And that's barely even the problem with the system. The main problem is how wide apart the AP brackets are in DPS. The game has an artificial forced pecking order in place that makes the PVP pointless. What is the point of wanting to kill people simply by having 10x their damage and defenses? It showcases nothing, it teaches you nothing, it ruins the experience for both parties. The AP brackets have all that hidden AP because they want to force people to pay to compete. You aren't going to install BDO today and be able to fight for a rotation reliably for 5000 hours of gameplay. No well intentioned developer does something like that in a game with paid progression skips, they're just evil.

Thank you so much for the insight and putting in the hours to accurately inform all of us. I bought the game last week while on steam sale. I'm 24 hours in, level 57 (lots of smashing that R key), and the only things that I legitimately enjoy are the combat and character creation. Every other aspect of this game seems convoluted with unnecessary steps and grinding seemingly for the sake of grinding. I'm also gonna call it quits lol, life rng is frustrating enough.
