      I just bought the Mammoth but currently i'm using the CLABass + Softube Saturation Knob (keep low mode), heavy multiband compression and EQ (static and dynamic).
      In the past i've also used the BassGrinder Vst.

    if you are a bass player, being able to get a clanky tone with your fingers is the most valuable skill to learn for rock/heavy music. imo...

    • @Durkhead
      @Durkhead 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I always thought it depends on the song sometimes I would switch between pick and fingers in the middle of the song

    • @RaulRieraS
      @RaulRieraS ปีที่แล้ว +41

      If you're a bass player, being able to use your ears and play what sounds good for the song instead of sticking only to what bass gatekeepers approve... That's pure gold!

    • @Aio-Project
      @Aio-Project ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@RaulRieraS i now play bass for my friend's black metal band... i can only get the sound i want with a pick lol. other than long tremolos, fingers tend to make the band sound bigger

    • @RaulRieraS
      @RaulRieraS ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Aio-Project try picking closer to the neck. Many people pluck with fingers closer to the "P" pickup position but when using a plectrum they pick too further back towards the bridge making it sound less bodied.
      Good pick technique (for metal) sounds unbelievably similar to Steve Harris doing his thing.
      (Before the flames begin people, check the many TH-cam videos about it and get angry at life, not at me 😅).
      By the way your original comment is spot on. Too many rock and metal bass players mistakenly believe they "should" be playing with their fingers, but their plucking is just weak, making the entire band sound dull.

    • @Aio-Project
      @Aio-Project ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@RaulRieraS yeah i feel like too many bassists i see gave up on finger style too early. regardless of which technique, ive heard a lot of local metal bands where bassists just sound harsh
      as for the closer to the neck or bridge, i find that the faster the subdivisions, the more playing close to the bridge helps. closer to the neck is more percussive and deep, but if you go too fast over the neck its easy to lose the pitch of the note. closer to the bridge the pick attack and the note can both be heard.
      in general i find that fingers offer a lot more control over articulation. you can slap the string into the fingerboard and get a fast attack, or you can really grip the string for slower attack to make the band sound huge on the big accents
      but you sound like you know a thing or two haha

    Until now I´ve had so many problems with getting a tight, "grunty" bass tone. The result was often a mix of to much compression and therefore lowend mud + too much distortion which doesn´t cut through the mix (pink noise against guitar pink noise)
    I´ve just tried the trial version of it and OMG, the sound just cuts through like butter.
    It even sounds a bit like the bass sound from "Prayer Position" by Periphery which I absoluetly adore!

    Great bass tone, as much as everyone loves a huge guitar tone, IMO leaving plenty of room for the rhythm section to sound big often tends to result in a more aggressive sound overall, even though the guitars might not sound as huge. One of my favorite examples is the Outsider album by Comeback Kid, that album sounds mean as hell even though (or because) the guitars leave the low end wide open for the bass.

    Great video, I’ve been meaning to pick this plug it up after Glen Fricker reviewed it. I do get really nice bass tones with the ProTools sans amp PSA-1. But I often have to duplicate the track etc. I totally agree about how much distortion is necessary, sometimes bass players are totally horrified when I solo their bass guitar.😂

    You can get a pretty clanky Bass tone useing fingerstyle if you don't push through the strinhs but rather hit them pretty hard from the top so the string hits the highest fret. Sounds different from pick playing but still a pretty nice sound ;)

    • @sTeVe-vl3nh

    love all your info! Very helpful to me as a metal bassist. I wanna say 2 things though: If you haven't tried them yet, give Sadowsky Black Label Steel strings a try. They sound a little bit less bright than DAddario Pro Steels for example but for me, they hardly change their tone. I just love them. Pro Steels I wanted to change after like 2 weeks (not recording, just playing) or 4 weeks at the latest. The Black Labels stay on for months and keep sounding great.
    And about playing approach: absolutely true that a pick will give you more clank, no question about it. It's not really a big deal to make a bass sound metal when playing fingerstyle though either. What you have to do is adjust your technique for metal (don't play like a pop, funk, whatever player) by not plucking in parallel to the body but hitting towards the body and make the strings bounce off the frets like with slap and of course you have to adjust your bass' setup to match your playing technique. Then it's very simple.

  • @tobins6800
    @tobins6800 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Here's the fun thought, bass brings the bite and attack that the guitar tends to lose with more processing. Might have teach the bass player how to use the pick and fingers at different parts of the string for best results. For instance, closer to the bridge with the pick for faster single notes, or when you want the low end to carry the groove, use a finger nearer the neck.
