I prefer side by side because the French door version still need to bend the knee to the ice queen to get frozen items. With side by side, I keep frequently used items on top. Also, I noticed those french door with ice maker/crushed ice often have issues with either water leak and frozen/stuck icemaker. I think logically with a mixed temperature environment (ice maker and regular refrigerator together), there's a difference in temperature. That might create that froze up issue and not able to make ice. I could be wrong if their insulation is good.

My new fridge I chose has top freezer, the shelves sit higher (less bending) going from bottom freezer 21cubic to 17 cubic, just me. The model is slimmer, not so wide. I think a good choice for my year round cottage. My son is giving me a small chest freezer he no longer needs. That way I can stock up for the Winter.

I was recently at several relative's houses and they all had the French door type fridge. I put ice in my drinks several times a day and having the ice maker down in the pull out drawer is a pain! The drawers were full for Thanksgiving and really heavy to pull out for me. Also, it reminded me of a chest freezer, which I hate---digging through your food in a big chest to find the frozen corn or a package of hamburger is annoying to me I'll stick with my side by side--ice in the door so you don't have to open the freezer for ice and I have the individual freezer shelves categorized for chicken, pork, beef, and other frozen foods with the frozen veggies in the door shelves. We bought an extra freezer shelf to accommodate our system.

disagree. NOTHING is convenient about a French door bottom freezer section. With a side by side, you can keep frequently used items at a handy height in both compartments. everything is easier to organize and access.
I had a sxs for 15+ years, new house had French doors and I hated it. Went back to sxs and am so happy. I cook a lot, many leftovers and ingredients in both compartments, the side by side is SO much more practical. The ice maker is also much smaller, simpler. A door-mounted ice maker in the fridge section is far less optimal, and they fail a lot.

Thank you SO VERY much for responding! I greatly appreciate you taking the time to respond with your professional opinion. Do you have time for another question?
We currently have a GE Profile, side-by-side, PSS26PSTBDSS (15 yrs). Ice accumulates in the refrigerator on the wall behind the vegetable bin. Do you know what causes this and is there anything we can do (besides replacement) to stop/address this? Last December a GE certified repair person replaced the control board and defrost heater. The "repair" lasted 1 month and we're back to defrosting about every 2-4 weeks. The "repair" was about as effective as leaving the unit to defrost on its own!

As a domestic refrigerator repairer 40 years experience, I’d definitely say French door refrigerator are the most difficult to repair, can take an additional hour of repair time to repair the most basic issues, therefore EXPENSIVE $$$ to repair, therefore not recommended by me,
Freezer on top or on the bottom my best suggestion,
Side by side, not so convenient.

A large, pigeon pair, separate refrigerator, separate matching freezer is a fantastic option for a large capacity if that’s what you are after

    Hi, Garrick,
Thanks for the video. Very enlightening.
The GE PFD28BYNFS model was recommended in an earlier comment. Yes, we’re considering this one. My concern is that it was mentioned to stay away from water and ice and is dispensed through the refrigerator door and this model does that. What problems should we expect? We’ve had 2 GE profiles. The first one was great. With the 2nd one (a side-by-side), I’ve had to defrost the refrigerator every 2-4 weeks for the last tears.
Question #2: what are your thoughts on Electrolux ERMC2295AS? I hear this unit is very noisy. My GE Profile is very quiet, except when the refrigerator freezes.
Question #3: because my family wants a water/ice dispenser on the outside, what are your thoughts on the Bosch B36CD50NS? Is this a quiet running unit?
Question #4: maybe I should ask, which refrigerator with an outer water/ice dispenser do you recommend?
Many thanks for your reply!! M. In Texas

Hello Margaret from sunny and chilly Calgary!
Thanks for watching and thank you for your questions!
A1: Yes, the water and ice dispenser in the door is not ideal however this recommended model is a good one. We do not recall lots of issues with that except probably the noisy level (some customers find it a bit noisier).
A2: This is ultimately a fancy model but too new on the market to have a lot of issues. Not sure if it’s a good one or bad.
A3: This one is a great model but sometimes it has issues with electronic miscommunication which is a complicated thing to solve in case it’s not under a warranty
A4: For this budget, you also can face a look at Fisher & Paykal models. They are solid done and will not let you down.

We had a side-by-side, it broke, we got a Bosch French-door. I hate it.
It wants me (right handed) to always open the left door first and close the right door first, (pain in the neck with several things in hand) on threat of buggering the little flapper that pivots to seal the inter-door gap (reputed expensive repair). I tried to compensate by moving all the most-used items to the left side, a task complicated by the fact that the ice maker and thru-the-door water dispenser (which I like a lot) live inside and occupy a lot of space on that left side.
I’m almost looking forward to the thing crapping out so we can try something else.

@@techvillappliancerepair3825 I would suggest fix one to be putting that flapper gadget on the left door. Then the 80% of the world that is right handed wouldn’t have to try to retrain themselves and their families. We could put the rarely used stuff under the ice maker and live on the right side. The Bosch reliably pisses me off every day.
And if I were designing, that left door with the gadget would become narrower, and the right door wider, with the crisper drawer widths made accordingly

I agree completely with this man on how awful side by side refrigerators are. However my appliance repairman (repairs all types of kitchen appliances) who repaired my upright freezer told me to AVOID buying french door refrigerators because they have 2 motors? or 2 compressors? or 2 something something which means twice the chance of something breaking. He said to go with freezer on top or a side by side since both have been made for decades and manufacturers worked the bugs out. He also said to stay away from foreign brands. After my "made in USA" lemon of a Whirlpool dishwasher, I don't know what to make of that. This video appliance repairman at the end of the video only mentioned the top freezer, side by side and French door but did not mention bottom freezer. Big complaints about French doors is that stupid meat drawer which forces people to open BOTH doors to access or the French door that forces you to open both doors to open any drawer OR having to use your hand or your shoulder to keep one or more of the 2 doors OPEN while you are rummaging around in the refrigerator trying to find something. I have read thousands of all type of refrigerator reviews pro and con. I have a very narrow 24" wide bottom freezer which I can now now replace with any width refrigerator I want after a kitchen remodel. I have not decided yet. I do NOT want a side by side. I do not want a freezer on top. I like the idea of a French door or a bigger bottom freezer refrigerator but am leery of a French door since my repairman said to avoid them. I wish this repairman said which MANUFACTURERs to avoid and which to buy. Even if someone wanted a Freezer on Top...there is no manufacturer which makes anything decent - they are all cheap looking and very basic inside.

Hi Mile, thanks for watching, and thanks for the comment. Extra functional parts make the system work easier means less pressure, however, extra electronics make the system less reliable. LG also has good layout, same as Samsung, not reliable. Problem compressor, dead on 2nd year. Leaking compressor on 7th year. Refill coolant. I don’t even hook it with water outlet cos we don’t need the water n ice functions. I use it as a basic fridge. I love it has almost 30 cf and without water dispenser.

My Samsung bought new in 2008 has lasted 14 years & recently developed water in the crisper drawers, about every 5 days, not much, I can wipe up with 3-4 paper towels. I can live with that but it’s 21 cubic & way large for my needs. I have a chance to buy new top freezer, fits my needs, on sale for $779.00 with tax and 3 year warranty came to $990.00. I would buy another Samsung, bottom freezer but they start at $1500.00, uh, the price wasn’t in my budget.

Others like the profile GE brand are very stables. But i saw the new Frigidare refrigerator and i like it design very much, what is your opinion about that model? I appreciate your answer. I'm super sensitive to unnecessary noise, the fridge I have now is so bad at times,I'm ready to smash it to bits (its a Maytag).
I've been trying to gather information on noiseless fridges. Is no noise even possible?I scrolled through your videos but saw nothing on the topic.

Hello Kye, Thanks for watching and thanks for the good question. The best way to go is to inquire this information from the store/manufacturer cause usually they don’t like to post it online.
The other thing is cooling agent in the system. I found newer R600a systems are noisier comparing to traditional R134a.
It’s very complicated to say which brand is noisy and which is not just because there are good and bad models in each manufacturer. Generally we would recommend GE to our clients as a budget option. They have much less bugs and glitches than other budget options.

      @techvillappliancerepair3825  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Hi Don, thanks for watching and thanks for the question. IKEA doesn't manufacture the fridges. They just have a contract with someone who does that for them. As far as we know they have a contract with Whirlpool and Whirlpool makes all the appliances for them. If it didn't change then yes you can consider them. But if they switched to Samsung or LG then I would recommend just look for something else. On their website they don't say who the manufacturer of their appliances is so you may need to look on the label inside the fridge and it should tell you that. Or simply ask the sales rep at IKEA.

Bosch should be on lower price range side than another two. And Samsung would be the brand you should be careful with as they have quite a few glitches in the design and things can go wrong with Samsung easily. In terms of timing here in Calgary, AB we actually observe the shortage of the supply - you need to wait for the appliance you have chosen to be delivered. This is due to ongoing pandemic and longer time in production and transportation of the appliances. So timing doesn't really matter at this point and you need to look at the best solution that fits your needs.

The issue is that an ice maker chamber is located inside of the fridge compartment.
Usually, this design itself causes that kind of issues. Samsung fridges all have that issue with ice-maker located inside the fridge compartment and not inside the freezer compartment.

Hello Fizah, thanks for watching and thanks for the question. More likely the issue is with a drain line. It’s clogged for some reason and defrosted ice is flowing inside of the compartment. You need to partly disassemble the fridge to have an access to the evaporator area to find and defrost the drain line.

So what you are saying is the position of the freezer must be at the bottom to protect the spine but the compressor must be on the top so there's no worry of the compressor fan pulling in dust, right? What brand of refrigerator is this?

@@techvillappliancerepair3825 Now I am confused. Are KitchenAid, Viking, and Subzero the only refrigerator manufacturers that make refrigerators with compressors on top and freezers on the bottom? I assume by freezer on the bottom that means either 1) French door style or 2) fridge on top/freezer on bottom. You said you purchased Borch French door refrigerator. Does Borch make a compressor on top French door refrigerator? You recommended I buy a GE or a Borch French door fridge. Does GE or Borch make a French door refrigerator with no ice maker/no water dispenser with a compressor on top? If it does, I am ready to buy that Borch or GE

I used to have a 48" wide side by side Sub Zero and after it needed it's third very expensive out of warranty repair I ditched it. I've talked to other Sub Zero owners who had similar experiences - multiple expensive out of warranty repairs. I wouldn't buy another Sub Zero and at that point I wasn't willing to drop another $10K on another built in refrigerator so I decided against getting a GE Monogram. I was left with a big hole in my cabinetry that wouldn't be filled by a standard refrigerator. I ended up buying two 24" wide counter depth GE refrigerators that have two freezer drawers on the bottom. I put them in the space next to each other with one door reversed so they open like a side by side and I filled in the extra open space left at the top of the cabinet as the new refrigerators are shorter than my Sub Zero was. Anyway, I'm just posting that as a cautionary tale. As a former owner I would NOT recommend Sub Zero!

I've not seen a freezer that fits what I want. The side by side has too little space, the bottom freezer isn't that great for people who can't bend to reach it and the normal top freezer it's the same bending but I do go into the freezer often so that one works best. Wished there was a french door similar to that.

Hi Shawn, Garrik is here and thanks for the good question. It depends on your pocket but general rule - I recommend to buy as simple as possible with no horns and whistles. At the end of the day you need your food to stay cold or frozen - that's it. In terms of the brands I would recommend Bosch, Blomberg and Liebherr however those ones can be on a bit pricey side, still it is worth it. And you should stay away from Samsung - we repair tons of them and they can go down in 2-3 years from the time of the purchase.

Thanks for watching and thanks for the question! Freezer at the bottom is not a bad option. It is similar to French door ones but a bit smaller. From usability perspective it is quite convenient as well. Just keep in mind that the door is wider so you will need more space to open it. And in terms of potential repair it is easy to handle. Freezer on top is usually very basic model and it is hard to use as you always need to bend to get things in and out but freezer on top is inexpensive option. Let me know if it clarifies.

My wife was excited today when she thought my old basic white fridge was tore up because the door was not closing all the way. She wasn’t happy when I said ah I fixed it! It’s just a bottle of ketchup keeping it form closing all the way.
She’s really wanting new stainless appliances but my old ugly white stuff like my fridge has worked fine since I bought the house at least 18 years ago. Only issue is the ice maker drips in the freezer which ends up freezing and doesn’t ever leak out. I’m afraid if I buy a new one it’s going to be a piece of junk.

You missed a huge downside to french doors, if you want a water/ice dispenser (which is important for me). fd fridges have a big, bulky ice maker in the fridge section. That is bad, more prone to failure.
a sxs has a smaller, more efficient ice maker in the freezer compartment where it belongs. far more reliable.
everything is easier to organize and more accessible in a sxs. and they are less expensive than comparable fd models. and yes, i use my freezer a lit more than twice a week!

Anything any brand that has a built in water dispenser and ice machine will fall apart after 2 years. All those mechanisms freeze and leak. The cost to send out a repair man is $150, then it goes up depending on how honest the repair man is. Buy a simple double door with lower or upper freezer. I couldn’t get past the “you’ll only open the freezer once or twice a week”. Who are you?? And the French door fridge in the video abuts a wall. BIG MISTAKE! You cannot open the door fully, and you’ll need to remove the buckets to get the shelves out to clean them.
I’ve had all types of refrigerators and when I got my french door fridge, in a short period of time, I hated it. I now was opening two doors every time I wanted in the fridge instead of one. Crazy. Although I thought I loved the freezer on the bottom UNTIL we rented a house with a LG side-by-side. My sister always told me how she hated her side-by-side because she couldn’t place her pies in the narrow freezer. I get that. She likely had a 33” or smaller refrigerator where side by side isn’t the best. HOWEVER I absolutely LOVED the LG 36” side-by-side. NO MORE DIGGING into a freezer on the bottom, getting items stuck on the top freezer drawer and accidentally leaving a small gap in the door. The side-by-side allows me to easily see what is in my freezer and access everything. I’m not a pie baker and I don’t buy pre-made pizzas. I’m ready to push BUY on a LS23C4000V LG side-by-side to replace the Kenmore 2-door freezer on the bottom that came with our condo.
