I watched both their entire careers. There is no way to properly quantify the fear Kobe put in teams. Just watch some of Kobe's highlights but look for one thing in particular. Look at when he has the ball and is either driving or working towards his position just how many players on the other team aren't even paying attention to their man. The guy put the fear of god in opposing teams when the game was on the line. LeBron is the more consistent and well-rounded basketball player I've ever seen. The guy is legit a threat to get a Triple double every night. He's a locomotive in with the ball in his hands. He's developed a great jumpshot. He's a truly amazing, unique ball player. As for who is better, I can't really say. They are even to me. Very different but neither's method is better than the other. It's amazing that Kobe is that high on the all time scoring list after sitting on the bench for two and a half years plus missing another 2 years to injury. No other player up there missed about 4 seasons of playing time but still gets to 3rd all time scoring. LeBron is likely to pass him but he's not missed a season at all for injury or any other reason. Just two of the greatest of all time and I'm honored to be able to see them both.

MJ revolutionized the game with the way he played and more and more people started to want to be "like mike". With that, the NBA started being dominated more and more by guards who were much more athletic than the guards MJ played against. Therefore, teams started changing the way they played defense to combat these more athletic guards. In fact, MJ never even had to play against zone defenses. Kobe in his PRIME played against a slew of teams that were geared to stop guards like him, and yet the dude still destroyed every team in his way. If you watch game film of Jordan during his 88 season and Kobe during his 06 season, it's clear that Kobe had taken Jordan's game and elevated it to another level. You can definitely say that MJ was more revolutionary, but Kobe was the better player.

Then MJ arrived and people saw how exciting and dominant an athletic guard was and people started to want to emulate that. Because of Wilt, teams started realizing they were going to need to figure out a way to stop big men and eventually they did. Hence why no one will ever average the insane stats that Wilt did. I mean, since you like to judge a players value just based off of stats, Wilt was significantly better than MJ. Anyways, you can see this effect in that Shaq, as dominant as he was, was never close to what Wilt did statistically. After MJ, teams started figuring out ways to stop dominant guards, i.e. zone defenses. So therefore, because of MJ, Kobe had to play against defenses that were much tougher for a guard like him. Yet he was still able to put up the numbers that he did. Again, I'm not saying MJ wasn't great, but there's a reason that even when MJ was hot, he wasn't 62 in 3 quarters or 81 pt HOT like Kobe. When Kobe was on his game, there was no player, not even MJ who could compare to him.

I watched both their entire careers. There is no way to properly quantify the fear Kobe put in teams. Just watch some of Kobe's highlights but look for one thing in particular. Look at when he has the ball and is either driving or working towards his position just how many players on the other team aren't even paying attention to their man. The guy put the fear of god in opposing teams when the game was on the line.
LeBron is the more consistent and well-rounded basketball player I've ever seen. The guy is legit a threat to get a Triple double every night. He's a locomotive in with the ball in his hands. He's developed a great jumpshot. He's a truly amazing, unique ball player.
As for who is better, I can't really say. They are even to me. Very different but neither's method is better than the other. It's amazing that Kobe is that high on the all time scoring list after sitting on the bench for two and a half years plus missing another 2 years to injury. No other player up there missed about 4 seasons of playing time but still gets to 3rd all time scoring. LeBron is likely to pass him but he's not missed a season at all for injury or any other reason. Just two of the greatest of all time and I'm honored to be able to see them both.

I would argue that Kobe even surpassed Jordan when he was in his absolute prime. People forget how ridiculous he was during that 06 season. Kobe had like 6 50+ pt games, 25 40+ pt games, the 62 against Dallas in 3 quarters, and of course the 81 pt game. All of that was WITH the double and triple teams he was facing because the rest of the starting 5 was Lamar Odom, Kwame Brown, Smush Parker, and Chris Mihm. Not even MJ ever had a season like that.

MJ played in a time when big men basically dominated the league and a high flying guard with the athleticism that he had was unheard of. MJ revolutionized the game with the way he played and more and more people started to want to be "like mike". With that, the NBA started being dominated more and more by guards who were much more athletic than the guards MJ played against. Therefore, teams started changing the way they played defense to combat these more athletic guards. In fact, MJ never even had to play against zone defenses.
Kobe in his PRIME played against a slew of teams that were geared to stop guards like him, and yet the dude still destroyed every team in his way. If you watch game film of Jordan during his 88 season and Kobe during his 06 season, it's clear that Kobe had taken Jordan's game and elevated it to another level.

MJ was an athletic force that the league hadn't seen before, much like how Wilt has a physical force that the league hadn't seen before. Because teams saw how dominant Wilt and Bill Russell were, the league started to become more of a Big Men oriented league. Then MJ arrived and people saw how exciting and dominant an athletic guard was and people started to want to emulate that. Because of Wilt, teams started realizing they were going to need to figure out a way to stop big men and eventually they did. Hence why no one will ever average the insane stats that Wilt did. I mean, since you like to judge a players value just based off of stats, Wilt was significantly better than MJ.
Anyways, you can see this effect in that Shaq, as dominant as he was, was never close to what Wilt did statistically. After MJ, teams started figuring out ways to stop dominant guards, i.e. zone defenses. So therefore, because of MJ, Kobe had to play against defenses that were much tougher for a guard like him. Yet he was still able to put up the numbers that he did.
Again, I'm not saying MJ wasn't great, but there's a reason that even when MJ was hot, he wasn't 62 in 3 quarters or 81 pt HOT like Kobe. When Kobe was on his game, there was no player, not even MJ who could compare to him.

I hate this debate...it’s a different game. Jordan was a “smaller guy” in a rough era, you couldn’t run any play without getting beat up a little. LeBron is a bigger guy in a very soft era. With all the flops and everything in this league now it’s hard to say if a lot of players now could’ve played in the league 20 years ago. Jordan is a better player in my eyes because of what he did in the era he played in. If Jordan played in today’s game he would have dominated even more than he did in the 90s.
