I had a cardiac arrest during a 5K running event. Luckily a fellow runner who knew CPR saw me collapse. The race was on a looped trail so the runners returned to the spot I collapsed. There were firefighters in that group of runners and they started a tag team of CPR before the EMT's arrived with an AED. I was shocked 3 times before my pulse returned. I was then rushed to a hospital with a cath lab and received 2 stents to my "widow maker" artery immediately. I had been pulseless for 12 minutes. The quality CPR and conditioning had kept me from sustaining any major organ failure or brain damage. A year later I returned to the same race and was able to participate and finally thank the first responders in person. Damar Hamlin received the best out-of-hospital response possible and hopefully he will have the same successful results as me.

How old were you when this happened? And was it recent?
If you don't mind me asking, what did it feel like? What were your symptoms? I'm sorry you went through such a traumatic event. Glad you pulled through.
You don't have to answer that question if you don't want to. I'm just always curious because we all the classic signs of an MI. I asked one of my massage clients what their cardiac arrest was like. She had had 2 & has a pacemaker. She told me she just felt off, extreme dizziness, extreme hot & cold sensations. She told me she turned white & collapsed. She felt no chest pain or numbness. Just very dizzy, weak, & faint.
My first serious boyfriend died of an MI while driving. He was in his early 30s. He did a lot of drugs & he wasn't the healthiest person. He was overweight. While I'm married now to another person, I still felt bad that this had happened to him. He left behind 2 kids & a wife. Since the MI took place while he was driving he crashed & died on the scene as a result.
No matter Who or Which team you're a fan of, NOBODY WANTS TO SEE A MEMBER OF THE OPPOSING TEAM GET HURT LET ALONE BE FIGHTING FOR HIS LIFE. They did the RIGHT THING by stopping the game. Because it's just that, A GAME!!

That young man deserves better
The one positive thing about this event, broadcast in front of millions, was the immediate and universal display of raw empathy and humanity that followed from all of the players on the field, the announcers, the fans in the stadium, and the public in general. This was an awful scene to behold, but along with this terrifying and awful event, we also witnessed the best of humanity in response to it, as the medics and healthcare providers decisively swung into action, and the rest of us collectively lifted Mr. Hamlin up with our heartfelt thoughts and prayers.

I remember seeing Christian Eriksen collapse in the Denmark - Finland game during the 2021 euro’s. Absolutely haunting when the tv director hadn’t realized yet what happened and the camera close up showed his eyes… completely lifeless😖 thank god team medics etc. were there to quickly start cpr and he made it and is playing football again!

Reading about commotio cordis (for the first time), I'm only surprised this has not happened more in the NFL and in football in general.
From an NIH study: "Commotio cordis is the second-most common cause of sudden cardiac death in athletes. Occurrence of commotio cordis is related to time of impact during the cardiac cycle, direct impact over the heart, the hardness and speed of the projectile, and the ineffectiveness of chest barriers. As a result, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends that softer “safety” baseballs be used for youth baseball. Resuscitation using defibrillation was effective in only 15% of cases. Resuscitation within 3 minutes resulted in a survival rate of 25% (17 of 68 cases). Survival drops to 3% when resuscitation is delayed beyond 3 minutes. Survival of commotio cordis has risen from 10% to 15% since 2001. Reduced ventricular ejection fraction has been identified in some commotio cordis survivors."

omg. his heart stopped after the hit. i had a friend whose brother was hit right in the sternum by a basketball in gym class and he fell because his heart stopped. they couldnt get him breathing fast enough so he suffered mild brain damage.

I normally don't comment on sports, and haven't watched football for many decades, I didn't know that the other football players were so moved by the event, even so, while I do not know that even with all that, if the fans or other football players are compelled to sing at his window, or say a firm affirmations it is possible that Damar Hamlin can hear you. Prayers and best wishes for Damar and his family.

This is a terribly sad and unfortunate situation. My heartfelt prayers to young Hamlin and to his entire extended family.
This for me has shocking echoes of the collapse of Christian Eriksen, the Danish Football (Soccer) International who fell to the ground during the Men's European Championship game in 2021. He had an on-field cardiac arrest, he was "dead" for 10 mins but was resuscitated and then taken to the hospital.
He has had an operation to install an ICD Heart starter device. He returned to playing professional football in January 2022 with Brentford in the Premier League, and in the summer he moved to Manchester United and has recently started playing again for the national team

This event looks similar to what happened to Chris Pronger of the St Louis Blues in the 90s. Pronger was hit in the chest with a puck, and immediately collapsed and had to be resuscitated. It was later explained as an induced arrhythmia, like what is being described in this instance. Amazingly, Pronger was back playing within a week, and had a long career afterward. I'm hoping that Damar Hamlin will be as lucky as Pronger was.

Also I’m so so glad they respected this young man’s privacy enough to not show footage of the CPR taking place- one of the things i remember from the little training I have is that they warned us that CPR is brutal, breaking ribs, vomit, etc. I’m glad all shots were zoomed out for like… that part. Hoping for the best for this young man and thoughts and prayers go out to him and the doctors/nurses/paramedics/healthcare professionals caring for him

“Part of me feels guilty!” I understand! I loved football, and the hardest hits. That all changed, when the 49ers quarterback, Steve Young, sustained a concussion. After an exam in the locker room, it was announced that he would return for the second half. That turned my stomach, and I basically stopped watching. Later learning about the high incidence of CTE amongst players, I really can’t justify this abuse of human bodies, for our entertainment. We have to find a way to enjoy the skills of the game, without the danger.
I used to love watching football and wrestling, but I can't justify supporting either any more. As a game, I love football. But maybe it's best becoming just a video game, because in practice it's too much.

Sunday during the colts game, Nick Foles was slammed down on the turf and had a seizure on the field from the hit. It looked just as awful. Two scary incidents taking place within a day from each other. It’s sad sights to see.

The Foles play seemed to have violated the new roughing rules concerning falling on the QB with the tackler's full body weight, but it wasn't called on the field.
During the Penn State/Utah State game last night (I think it was that game, as I had watched several). A Utah State player hit a Penn State receiver with a helmet to helmet hit at high speed, both remained lying on the field and one could see the foot of the defensive plavyer seemingly twitching uncontrolably. While they have upped the safety precautuions, the problem has become that the players are bigger, stronger and faster.
If you should pay attention to whats happening worldwide to young sportsmen and how they are dropping dead on the field you would be surprised at the amount. Is this a new phenomena? Yes, it is. What do they all have in common, is a question no one is asking.

It looks like he was hit in the chest which must have injured his heart sending him into cardiac arrest. Injuries like that are rare but gravely serious.

I just watched a doctor explain it. Basically there is a millisecond window during the normal heart rhythm where a hard enough hit directly to the chest will cause arrhythmia and cardiac arrest in anyone. its very rare and is typically associated with baseball players getting hit with the ball in the chest.
Yeah they also said the vaccine was safe and effective. This is not the 1st time young healthy athletes have fell on the field. They are lying to us
So with the millions of hard tackles in the NFL and college football this guy is the only guy to ever get hit at the right time? I'm not buying it. I am guessing this is a case of commotio cordis, the heart stopped by a blow directly to the heart- that helmet right to the left side of his chest. Fairly typical for someone to just fall down and become unresponsive after a hard blow to the heart. Not a common injury, but it does happen.
That's just my guess, having only seen it happen once in my 20+ years as a medic.

Hamlin was hit during a heartbeat cycle. When one is hit in the chest hard in a certain way during the end of a heartbeat, it can discombobulate things and cause the heart to stop.

From past experiences, I've had to prepare for the worst.

I lost my 43 year old brother to sudden cardiac arrest in 2019. It is devastating.

Get well soon. We Shall Pray. This happened to my brother-in-law in Italy while playing soccer. He was having fun after returning from France and his AORTA (Heart Valve) Ruptured. He died within 10 minutes. After we found out from M.E. the cause I called hi son, my Nephew and begged him to get Cardiology exam immediately. True story. And he was upset I'd scare him like this. He never went to see a doctor. He died 7 months later of undiagnosed AORTA TEAR. Aurota Rupture while taking a shower getting ready for work in England. Rest In Peace you two....We loved you both! Get well to this 24 year old man. His whole life is ahead of him......Psalms 46:10
