  • This video shows you BobsCNC CNC router engraving on glass using a diamond drag engraving bit.
    how to engrave (etch) on glass and soft metals on a CNC router using drag bit engravers. It also shows you how to set up the CNC router for engraving the glass and what engraving tools you will need. Engraving n glass is very different than carving. In fact, some projects can only use this method. when you don't have an engraving machine, a CNC router works just as well.
    Etching with a drag bit is much easier and less messy than wood carving. There is glass dust but it remains very close to the etch line. A quick vacuum cleans it quickly.
    This method also works with brass, aluminum, and any other soft metals.
    It is STRONGLY recommended to use a spring-loaded drag bit when engraving on glass with a CNC router. This eliminates possible variations in pressure that can break the glass. It also is very forgiving for a spoil board that is uneven...you can have 0.25" variation and will still get a good project without damage or glass breaking.
    Glass engraving can be done on any CNC router. This job was done on a BobsCNC evolution 4 (evo4)
    If you own a CNC router, please take this survey: bit.ly/3r5XzNh
    CNC settings for the diamond drag bit:
    → Spindle remains off
    → the tool is setup as an endmill in the tool library
    → Feed 30 inches per minute
    → Depth of cut 0.05 to 0.1 inches
    If you search Amazon for a spring-loaded drag bit, you will find one that is not Widgetworks brand. DO NOT BUY THAT ONE IF YOU WANT TO ENGRAVE ON GLASS. The ratings repeatedly say the tip breaks on glass and other hard materials.
    However, it does have good ratings for acrylic. Here is the link: amzn.to/3bgWiwK

    Looks good. If you have uneven engraving depth from one side to another it's because you are failing to compress the bit into the spring. If you don't have your depth where the spring is partially compressed it can't compensate for uneven surfaces like it's designed to do. Even the best CNC beds have some variation in flatness. I compress my drag bit by 7mm (out of the 15mm total) and the tip pressure is very constant on un-flat surfaces. This feature becomes even more important when engraving surfaces that aren't very flat.

    • @tralfazy
      @tralfazy ปีที่แล้ว

      BTW.. if the pressure is too high after compressing the spring, just back off the tool's adjustment screw a little bit.

    • @IDCWoodcraft
      @IDCWoodcraft  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tralfazy, very good points my friend. Thank you for sharing your wisdom on glass engraving.

    • @tralfazy
      @tralfazy ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@IDCWoodcraft I hope it's helpful. I spent a bunch of hours looking at bit pressure and measuring it. WidgetWorks tells people to set the z height to zero and never even mentions compressing the spring. Hard to understand how the manufacturer of a compression drag bit could get that wrong!
      Carbide Create recommends that people compress a spring loaed drag bit 1/4 inch. (5mm) which should be fine most of the time. I use 7mm to put it at near mid-range. I loved your eagle engraving video and have been putting a similar one on all sorts of things. It was when I tried to put it on a rounded surface (flashlight) that I discovered the need to compress the bit into the spring more and started measuring bit pressure.

    • @JohnFlower-NZ
      @JohnFlower-NZ 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      For contrast, I've been using Gravograph CNCs (IS400s specifically, but I've a little experience with IS8000s, Vision and Omni CNCs) for diamond drag for twenty years and found that on those CNCs 1mm compression with 3mm Z travel on flat surfaces works well. For these machines the spring is in the spindle rather than attached to the diamond bit - but the principle is the same. But these CNCs have much smaller bed sizes than the one in this video.
      I judge pressure by pushing the bit with my fingers and for my circumstance (mostly engraving into soft metal) have never even thought about measuring it.
      That being said we've never used the diamond drag method on glass (hence my interest in this video) as it is considerably slower than CO2 laser. We also use sandblasting for some glass items. But if all you have is a CNC - then by all means. A CNC may also produce an effect that you, or your customers, prefer over other methods.
      The software used looked a bit clunky due to the high number of steps to create the design and get it ready for engraving. The default software for Gravograph (Gravostyle) is also clunky. I find I do much of the design in a more general programme like Blender, GIMP, and Inkscape. I like to use the engraving software just for simple jobs and for sending artwork to the CNC. A more general programme has more features and tutorials due to a bigger user base and bigger development budget.
