- First, I would like to sincerely thank Shri. Ravi Joshi for sourcing the audio; Shri. Ramkumar for his help in preparing the narration and Shri. Mohana Krishna for providing some of the technical nuances about this RTP.
Several rāgās shared a unique synonymous bond with BMK. Such a bond can also be seen between him and the aspect of RTP.
Balamuralikrishna began exploring Rāgam Tānam Pallavi (RTP) when he was twelve years old. And it evolved into a mighty tree over the subsequent decades.
The fruits of the tree, the choicest RTPs, ranging from single to multiple rāgās; tālams from simple to complex and the pallavi from the simply beautiful to the absolutely brilliant have mesmerised both scholars and laymen alike.
He pursued the highest ideal of manódharma, the forte of any musician worth the name, with such single-minded devotion due to which resulted some of the most magnificent RTPs. These RTPs, not merely magnificent but brilliant, bold and beautiful as well were done right on the stage with accompanists too having to learn, improvise in their own manner, and perform then and there on the stage. The RTP presented here in the rāga Chārukéshi is one such example.
While RTP , one of the most complete aspect of Indian classical music, enabled BMK a platform for expressing a comprehensive improvisation of music, it has also given him the opportunity in demonstrating the entire gamut of talent, the depth of knowledge and the creative genius in him. He demonstrated repeatedly what an RTP could be, and by doing so he uplifted the taste of rasikās for finer tunes and nuances of Carnatic music. It is not an exaggeration to say that BMK, through his RTPs enabled and produced rasikās who could appreciate Carnatic Music laced with rarity and creativity.
All India Radio (AIR), in the past , had an exclusive programme of airing RTP for about 45 minutes or so to showcase the complete aspect of Indian classical music and the recording presented here is one such rendition from AIR Hyderabad. I vaguely remember to have heard this in radio sometime during the late 1970’s or early 1980’s. If someone knows the actual date of transmission, kindly let me know.
Now , some technical details.
The RTP is rendered in Chatushra jāti Ādi tālam. It’s sung in Trishra gati (nadai). The off-set (Ettugada / Edupu) for the take-off of pallavi is after the 1st count. And the pada-garbam / arudhi (end of the pūrvāngam, the first half of the pallavi ending at the strike of the beginning of the second half of the tālam cycle) is 5 counts.
Let’s listen to enjoy the music, learn something new and discuss our reflections with others and finally facilitate the process of posterity by sharing and listening with the younger generation.
Excellent collection great full sir
No words
Balamurali sir is probably the only musician to have rendered RTP in both Charukeshi and its pratimadhyama counterpart melakartha Rishabhapriya with fervor and grandeur. Truly a legendary Bharat Ratna.

Dear Shri. Narayan gāru,
Thanks for your kind note of encouragement and appreciation for BMK's music.
Bala murali draws different boundary for Raga beautiful hair Charukesi .
Sorry I misspelled ur name as Srinivas Murty instead of Sreenivasa Murty. Sorry for the same. Kind regards.
The word Charukeshi always reminds me of the universal mother with her beautiful hair symbolizing the free flow of the divine force. It resembles the sacred river Ganga with her tributaries and the passage through the mountains spreading her beautiful hair enriching the earth. I think Dr. BMK and Charukeshi are like Krishna and Parvathi. A brother and sister. The brother really took care of his elder sister and that's what one feels listening any of his aalapanas of charukeshi. Charukeshi is my most favorite raga and the one and only reason is because of my beloved guruji Dr.BMK.
Dear Murthy sir, thank you for the upload. And it will be utter injustice if I don't thank the other and probably one of the finest human beings I have come across, Ravi Joshi. To me, talking to Ravi Joshi is like having satsang. Thank you dear Ravi. God bless you.
Thank you.
Appreciate your comments on Chārukéshi and the metaphor of river Ganga.
