  • Tyagaraja Bicentennial Concert - 1967 - MMA 29 Dec 1967
    M Balamuralikrishna - T Keshavulu - Tanjore Upendran.
To mark the bicentenary of Tyagaraja Swami, in 1967, Madras Music Academy held a Tyagaraja Festival. It is said that this concert was recorded by an American company called Pan Orient Arts Foundation in stereo. The audio collected from several sources has been used in reconstructing the concert and the same has been remastered.
The following concert is Dr. M Balamuralikrishna’s tribute to his foremost Guru. Being one of the Tyagaraja Shishya-parampara, he certainly has a special place in his heart for that great Saint.
This concert encapsulates all the prominent works of Saint Tyagaraja - Prahlada Bhakti Vijayam (PBV), Divya Nāma Sankeertana (DNS), Utsava Sampradaya Keertana (USK) and other kritis. The concert, spanning about 2h 20 minutes, is like a circle of music. Beginning with a kriti from PBV, then exploring the reflective kritis, then a verse by Valajpet Venkataramana Bhagavatar, then to USK and DNS to eulogise Rama, and concluding with a kriti from PBV again.
There are 13 tracks in this album and have attempted to provide a short synopsis in the hope of providing you a wholesome listening experience.
There is a detailed narrative written by Sri. Ramkumar, which is available in the comments section.
Track 4 : Samaja vara gamana - Hindola - Adi
Saint Tyagaraja sees Rama walking with the gait of an elephant, he sees him shining from the hearts of saint, resplendent of Sāma-veda, luminous of Omkara, effulgent all over the world. That illustrious protector of the universe is seen walking towards Saint Tyagaraja, and how does Rama look? The answer is presented in Bindumālini, in the next track.

    A narrative by Sri. T K Ramkumar
Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna - 1967 Tyagaraja Bicentennial Concert, MMA
A concert that stands out for many notable things but the most important among them being the variety of Tyagaraja kritis presented here. Every composition has been rendered so true-to-the-book that the rendition of each composition outshines the other leaving an ardent listener in a dilemma-which is the composition that I enjoyed most ? Essentially, every composition is thoroughly enjoyable.
There is lyrical delight due to the chaste diction in every composition. Then there is the right measure of rAgam delineation, followed by the inimitable and impeccable svara prastArams, the unalloyed bhAvam in each composition brought out distinctly, and not to forget the nice laya vinyAsam.
This is a concert to be cherished for decades like many of his other concerts. It is for reasons both obvious and not so obvious. The obvious reasons are mentioned above. The not so obvious reasons need some elaboration.
The first reason being at no place Balamuralikrishna has flaunted his immense talent; rather it is on a tight leash and the rendition is as it should be-as Tyagaraja intended the compositions to be. Through this, he has paid homage to his role model.
The second reason is the varied selection so that every facet of Tyagaraja’s music is represented in this concert-to highlight the great balance that Tyagaraja struck between his telling lyrics and his soulful music. Through this, Balamuralikrishna has revealed the rigour it takes to let people enjoy Tyagaraja’s great music.
The third reason is the rendition of a verse by Tyagaraja’s own disciple to let people know the greatness of Tyagaraja; and also to let people know the calibre of Tyagaraja’s disciple. Through it, Balamuralikrishna has only showed how much more he adores the Saint.
And the last reason is the thoughtfulness with which the mangaLam in the rAgam mohana is presented. It is the rAgam with which the Saint welcomed his chosen deity Shri Rama. With that same rAgam Balamuralikrishna bids adieu to the Saint.

Sir, I would respectfully like to make a small correction. The Kriti is actually in praise of Lord Krishna - Saint Tyagaraja says 'yadava Kula Murali' in the Kriti. This is one of the rare kritis of the Saint on Lord Krishna.
