@@Murkoph good comment, but there is a point. Falling in love for real and not just the usual crush means you will enter into real maturity because you’ll do things for the other and not just self. Sarah doesn’t even know herself yet, a very important component to real love, but through this encounter she learns quite a bit, especially when she chooses not to join the party, don a mask. It’s Gareth that actually has fallen in love with her-or is he even capable of love, we wonder? She reminds him of what he left behind, obviously with reckless abandon. He wants her to do the same. If she does, she will turn into one of them (goblins, or what we see here, dressed up goblins) and her power over him (and her power in self control) will be nil. She’ll be just another goblin whose affections ( like the one seen at 1:25) will be rejected for whatever else is his new whim and fancy. What’s possibly romantic about this is whether or not Gareth could be saved by her innocence/goodness/purity/power. It’s his intrigue, but it’s NOT his to take and he has no power over her if she refuses to succumb to his seductions, promises of meaningless pleasures. That’s his lesson. As goblin king, is he capable of changing and more so what could he possibly do now to deserve it? They are opposed. There is tension because her power creates almost a vacuum and a glimmer of hope for him, which in turn creates a glimmer of hope within her that this is real love. It’s basically her own reflection or we wonder, is there something truly real about this- even if it seems like nothing at all? In a bittersweet way, she does what she does as an act of love, but more so for self, not him..but the side effect of her self love/preservation is actual love for him also.

In the book, the goin king does fall in love with her as the journey goes on. So at first he was being a total jerk then by this point he is falling for her.
My favorite scenes 😍🥰 0:30 the mask reveal *heart clutch* 0:50-0:58- the fact that he only chasing his eyes after her even when he’s dancing with another girl, even ignoring a few 1:16-that wicked grin😈 1:56- that god-like pose 2:22- especially when he was singing to her 😍 And my favorite line in the song he sings to her: *i’ll be there for you... as the world falls doooown, we’re falling...as the world we’re falling too, falling in love* Thats like saying if “judgment day” has come (if her world or majority his world is ending ) he’ll be there for her Even when she rejects him... he’ll be there for her Kinda like that 80s song one of my personal favorites(“every breath you take” by the police...even tho its kinda a chiller😬..in the lyrics) (I have Another theory) What if the second verse 0:51- “A such a fool heart, beating so fast, in search of new dreams, a love that could last, within your heart... was referring to himself expressing his new dreams, his sudden new feelings that he dont know to formally address for sarah Because ..aside from him being a pompous irrational hostile king He know what passion love is..its just been awhile he’ve felt it for someone...and experiencing the feeling again Delivers an sudden change of emotions (“a fool heart beating so fast”) corresponds with his irrational behavior which makes him act as a conflicted teenage girl with mood swings and insecurities and these mood swing corresponds that he’ll do anything in his power to get her to only choose him (over toby... to elaborate in jareth language, “forget the child and be with me” ) The irrational side of him gave her the peach that put her in dream land and a trance...separating her from her friends and forgetting the mission ; the opposing romantic side is blowing her bubble dreams towards her at the window top(if anyone remember that scene) Teleporting her to the ball Dancing and singing to her 2:57 it kinda look like he was proposing/claiming her in a group “faerie ring” while they circling around them Anyways “I’ll be there for you” touches my heart the most because its like he saying whenever you are sad or alone or in pain...or in despair(hopeless) He’ll be there for her ...no matter what Even if the world is falling apart (Or ending, as if they in a apocalypse, he will be there for her ) And it seems like jareth is mostly expressive through songs Which makes him a poetic renaissance fae ♥️ Sure he was irrational in the beginning but feelings But love.. can make you irrational.🥴🤷🏽♀️ and it can be a twist with your persona Years of being alone (especially with goblins) probably cause him to be more impatient and easily annoyed And he’s a king ..he’s probably use to getting what he want and was taught that giving ppl things is a way to impress or get ppl attentions or affections But he also has a soft side ...as we witness here and he probably learn to express his feeling through poetry 😭im looking too deep into it but im just expressing my theory
I am 32 now, and this has always been the best scene in the movie Labyrinth. It always reminds me of Cinderella when Sarah enters the ball in her gorgeous white gown and everyone there is looking at her. The song playing "As The World Falls Down", Beautiful.
Oh... sigh. Just... sigh~ This part will always get to me, no matter how many times I watch it. It doesn't help that the song is on heavy rotation at work.
I have tears of happiness every time I listen to this song his voice, him, everything about it is just so mesmerizing and amazing I wish I had met him.❤️
That was so beautiful in every way,;I could watch this scene over and over again! Jennifer Connelly's hair, the ballroom, the music, all of it was gorgeous!
She definitely was a kid out of her depth in this scene. You ever been in a social situation you felt you were out of your depth?? Sarah was getting a crash course of the adult world surrounding her and it's written on her face. Adolescents see things in black and white. It's the age between a children and adult children. Definitely one of the best movies of all time when I was a kid. Now that I'm an adult child myself you understand the movie's subtleties and overtness
Jennifer Connelly was truly perfect for this movie. She was tall, slender, and could easily look anywhere between 15 and 20 honestly. An innocent, girlish quality but also graceful and mature. Such spot-on casting.
Still such an iconic movie! I always loved how puffy her dress is, and how beautifully her makeup and hair were done! And David Bowie's outfit and makeup are on point for this scene!
I see this as her subconscious telling her to grow up and mature to take care of her brother while her parents enjoy their dancing and little free time. Probably my favorite scene do to the meaning and overall song it’s just perfect and amazing.
I love this scene in the movie and love the song he wrote even more 🥰 had a crush on David Bowie since I was 16 ! 34 now and still do absolute legend RIP 😢❤️
I remember getting the video for my 6th birthday back in the 80's, I remember being completely mesmerised by the man who played the Goblin King ( David Bowie) his voice gave me chills and from that very moment I was under his amazing spell and always will be. I've been a fan of Bowie ever since. He was such a beautiful work of art. ❤
this very scene is one of the reasons this movie isn t only for children ;) i love it, amazing music and everything :) thx so much for putting this up :)
Who is the OTHER Sarah admirer in this scene? The white skull face mask with the pirate hat with a skull on it at 00:16, 1:26-27, 1:36, 1:52-53, 2:30-31, 2:38-2:40, 2:45-46, 2:53, and lastly at 3:06. He never appears in scene with Jareth, and sometimes it seems he is flickered in and out of screen opposite Jareth. This has stood out to me for years, since I first saw the film. At one point in the middle of the scene, he seems to follow her as she moves in the center of his perspective. Any ideas? Or at least hints?! Thank you @happy coffees for seeing this and pointing it out too!
My assumption is it’s supposed to represent Jareth himself, that on surface he’s dreamy and handsome. But right below is actually an evil monster who’s looking for its victim. Considering this is a growing up/ coming of age movie it can be more of a warning to young adults about how to be careful who you fall for.
I wanted Sarah's dress. I also love how this ball is full of beautiful people in garish costumes, but there is a constant undercurrent of menace that you can't quite place until the end. It's in the glances, the laughter, the movement.
He's just the most attractive man in the world honestly. I get why she saves her brother but dear God the amount of self control you have to have to say no to that man is just otherworldly
Gotta love how her hair got even more 80s-ish in this scene.

Damn Sarah was soo lucky to do this, and look at Jareth straight in the eyes 😢😍
Honestly one of the best scenes of any movie I’ve watched, the music the theme, the dance, the mystery, and of course, DAVID.
I need her dress for my wedding, and I need David as my husband...
Rest in Peace, Goblin King.
Recently discovered this gem of movies and I fell head over heels for Jareth, and those songs made by the amazing David Bowie
My favorite scenes 😍🥰
0:30 the mask reveal *heart clutch*
0:50-0:58- the fact that he only chasing his eyes after her even when he’s dancing with another girl, even ignoring a few
1:16-that wicked grin😈
1:56- that god-like pose
2:22- especially when he was singing to her 😍
And my favorite line in the song he sings to her:
*i’ll be there for you... as the world falls doooown, we’re falling...as the world we’re falling too, falling in love*
Thats like saying if “judgment day” has come (if her world or majority his world is ending ) he’ll be there for her
Even when she rejects him... he’ll be there for her
Kinda like that 80s song one of my personal favorites(“every breath you take” by the police...even tho its kinda a chiller😬..in the lyrics)
(I have Another theory)
What if the second verse 0:51-
“A such a fool heart, beating so fast, in search of new dreams, a love that could last, within your heart... was referring to himself
expressing his new dreams, his sudden new feelings that he dont know to formally address for sarah
Because ..aside from him being a pompous irrational hostile king
He know what passion love is..its just been awhile he’ve felt it for someone...and experiencing the feeling again
Delivers an sudden change of emotions (“a fool heart beating so fast”) corresponds with his irrational behavior which makes him act as a conflicted teenage girl with mood swings and insecurities
and these mood swing corresponds that he’ll do anything in his power to get her to only choose him (over toby... to elaborate in jareth language, “forget the child and be with me” )
The irrational side of him gave her the peach that put her in dream land and a trance...separating her from her friends and forgetting the mission ; the opposing romantic side
is blowing her bubble dreams towards her at the window top(if anyone remember that scene)
Teleporting her to the ball
Dancing and singing to her
2:57 it kinda look like he was proposing/claiming her in a group “faerie ring” while they circling around them
Anyways
“I’ll be there for you” touches my heart the most because its like he saying whenever you are sad or alone or in pain...or in despair(hopeless)
He’ll be there for her ...no matter what
Even if the world is falling apart
(Or ending, as if they in a apocalypse, he will be there for her )
And it seems like jareth is mostly expressive through songs
Which makes him a poetic renaissance fae ♥️
Sure he was irrational in the beginning but feelings
But love.. can make you irrational.🥴🤷🏽♀️ and it can be a twist with your persona
Years of being alone (especially with goblins) probably cause him to be more impatient and easily annoyed
And he’s a king ..he’s probably use to getting what he want and was taught that giving ppl things is a way to impress or get ppl attentions or affections
But he also has a soft side ...as we witness here and he probably learn to express his feeling through poetry
😭im looking too deep into it but im just expressing my theory
This comment is so underrated!! I totally agree with you!
Beautiful
True!!! I think the same.. I like when you said about him as "a pompous irrational hostil king". Yes!! That is Jareth❤
He'll always be my goblin king ❤️
awe you just made my heart melt like candlewax :/
I am 32 now, and this has always been the best scene in the movie Labyrinth. It always reminds me of Cinderella when Sarah enters the ball in her gorgeous white gown and everyone there is looking at her. The song playing "As The World Falls Down", Beautiful.
i really want this scene to go forever the scene itself and the music is enchanting...
Oh yes! I wanted to see so much more of this kind of version of Jareth's court. It goes by so fast. :(
Yeah - but all bubbles have to burst sooner or later.
And that's only one of the clever metaphors going on in this whole sequence.
Same favorite part of the entire movie
I REALLY MUSN'T SHIP IT... MUST... RESIST.... DON'T SHIP IT WOMAN....
Dammit, I ship it.
Archie Holt same 😂
Same :v
The struggle is real
i mean she was 15 and he was like over 30 ..... gross
You want to ship it? What does that mean?
Jareth and Sara are the only ones without masks.
He does have a mask. The very first time we see him here - then he lowers it, we see his face for a second, then he disappears.
Oh... sigh. Just... sigh~ This part will always get to me, no matter how many times I watch it. It doesn't help that the song is on heavy rotation at work.
Devastated at his passing today....and this scene is haunting me, because he was the King in many ways - RIP David one of the beautiful people xx :(
Absolute perfection. There will never be another BOWIE
Sarah (Jennifer Connelly) in this scene is the most elegant and beautiful piece of art I have ever laid eyes upon, that dress and that face! WOW
we're not allowed to think so
Beautiful scene in a beautiful movie....
Rest in Peace, David Bowie.
David Bowies smile is so captivating...such a stunning man ❤️
She's just so stunningly beautiful
When they start dancing it's just beautiful
His smoldering gazes in this scene are too much man, dying ♥
I’ve been listening to this for 3 hours straight it never gets boring
Same here bro it’s such an enchanting song
I have tears of happiness every time I listen to this song his voice, him, everything about it is just so mesmerizing and amazing I wish I had met him.❤️
Sarah was super pretty in this scene and I love this movie
That was so beautiful in every way,;I could watch this scene over and over again!
Jennifer Connelly's hair, the ballroom, the music, all of it was gorgeous!
The scene has so much meaning for a kid's film.
Beautiful.
Gods this scene is so beautiful.
This dance sequence (and many others) was choreographed by Gates McFadden ( credited as Cheryl McFadden ).
i've been watching this scene over and over when i was 14 ;P
I understand what you mean;)
I don't think anyhting will ever top, or even match, the magic created by Jim Henson.
This is honestly my favorite movie ever.
Yasss, same
me too. I kinda wish they made a second one after that movie
Same
15,699 views? why does it only show how many times ive watched it?
be free my brother. you had amazing talent. I'm so happy that you're no longer in pain and in a place that's free
+Carlie Foster hes your brother???
Jennifer Connelly was truly perfect for this movie. She was tall, slender, and could easily look anywhere between 15 and 20 honestly. An innocent, girlish quality but also graceful and mature. Such spot-on casting.
This scene never fails to mesmerise me
Same something about it is so magical
She is so beautiful! And this is one of the best scenes in the movie.
One of the most beautiful scenes in cinema
Agreed 100% just said this myself
After seeing this movie, I had such a crush on Bowie. r.i.p.
This is one of my absolute favourite movie scenes!!! I need that dress so badly! :3
What a great voice David Bowie had and absolutely loved this movie!! Great memories as a kid brings tears to my eyes
the amount of love i have for this movie is crazy. bowie is perfect as jareth
Oh to be twirled around in a ballroom in beautiful, glittering gown
Still such an iconic movie! I always loved how puffy her dress is, and how beautifully her makeup and hair were done! And David Bowie's outfit and makeup are on point for this scene!
I see this as her subconscious telling her to grow up and mature to take care of her brother while her parents enjoy their dancing and little free time. Probably my favorite scene do to the meaning and overall song it’s just perfect and amazing.
I love this scene in the movie and love the song he wrote even more 🥰 had a crush on David Bowie since I was 16 ! 34 now and still do absolute legend RIP 😢❤️
he looks so devastated when she leaves.
Can't believe David Bowie was 39 when he did this movie, he looks amazing :)
She is absolutely beautiful ❤️
Ergh, I saw this movie for the first time this past weekend and I wanted them to end up together. TO THE FANFICTION!!
No, I can't believe it, David's gone. :( R.I.P.
Same, so magical ❤❤❤
This is probably my favorite scene of any movie I've ever watched
2:02 the way he looks at her...
this very scene is one of the reasons this movie isn t only for children ;) i love it, amazing music and everything :) thx so much for putting this up :)
This is my favorite scene from the movie! Am i the only one that listend to this song for ages and actualy learned to sing this song by myself!?
God I can’t stop crying 😭 Someone comfort me
Who is the OTHER Sarah admirer in this scene?
I can’t get this great song out of my head. 😌
I love Sarah in this scene, she's so beautiful and her dress is amazing
Agreed😍🥰
Lol Labyrinth, that one movie where the guy has twice as much make-up on his face as the girl and it somehow still works
I wanted Sarah's dress.
I also love how this ball is full of beautiful people in garish costumes, but there is a constant undercurrent of menace that you can't quite place until the end. It's in the glances, the laughter, the movement.
The magic is in it being equal parts romantic and frightening, equal parts beautiful and grotesque.
He's just the most attractive man in the world honestly. I get why she saves her brother but dear God the amount of self control you have to have to say no to that man is just otherworldly
The devil is very seductive.. it’s interesting just how many of us women would swoon and pick the devil in an instant
This is my favorite scene in the whole movie
