Thank you for another great video ! Another story of Pirates being hung at execution dock was Hastings' (East Sussex) Ruxley crew or 'chopbacks'. They boarded a Dutch Ship The Three Sisters of Beachy head and used an axe to to cut the Captain (Peter Bootes) down his spine. The Ruxley Crew or the 'Chopbacks were hung at execution dock in 1769 (p304, Tales from the Gibbet Post, Part 2 Daniel Codd, 2017).
The word wharf comes from the Old English hwearf,[7] cognate to the Old Dutch word werf, which both evolved to mean "yard", an outdoor place where work is done, like a shipyard
but it does also mean - A pier where ships or boats are tied up and loaded or unloaded. A shore or riverbank. A platform of timber, stone, or other material built on a support at the margin of a harbor or a navigable stream, in order that vessels may be moored alongside, as for loading or unloading, or while at rest.

Great walk Sinead! We did this walk in May for a Wapping/Limehouse Pub crawl. Town or Ramsgate, Captain Kidd, Prospect of Whitby then out to The Grapes. Love that area, so nice and quiet and full of history and great views of the Thames. Oh and the beer's not bad either.
I visited Wapping last May and will visit again in only 10 days! Sinead, you do a good job with the walking videos, love them. Thank you. Greetings from Germany!
@@Sineadlondontourguide loved it as per usual. Managed to buy a case of genuine Dublin Draught Guinness. So was saving for a special occasion and this was most certainly that. Fantastic as per usual.
I'm just copying and pasting here since I had no idea of the origin, but "wharf" is not an acronym: _The word wharf comes from the Old English hwearf, cognate to the Old Dutch word werf, which both evolved to mean "yard", an outdoor place where work is done, like a shipyard (Dutch: scheepswerf) or a lumberyard (Dutch: houtwerf)_
@@ToursbyFootLondon 👍You asked in the video if anyone knew, and I became curious myself. I wouldn't normally chime in like that, although I am a font of useless knowledge I fill every day. 😉
Thanks for an interesting video about the Wapping area. I must admit that though I was born in London but now live in Essex. some years ago I did parcel courier work which used to pass East London, though I never went to the areas you show in Wapping. .
Thanks Sinead, My favourite London pub. I was interested to see upstairs because whenever I have been there , upstairs has been closed for private parties. Cheers!

Always like your tour videos fantastic I noticed tho that the pub in this video mentions the Legend movie with Tom Hardy The pub used for the pub fight scene was filmed in Turner's old Star Wapping hope this information helps

I was brought up just over the other side in Rotherhithe, and all of that area and Wapping were run down. It's all so different now and trendy, I saw the start of the building of Canary Wharf in the 1980's.
Sinead is so good at relating gory execution tales. Her Jack the Ripper tour is to die for. All kidding aside, love your video tours. Just spent 3 months in the UK, mostly staying in London. Beautiful city. Love the sites. Can't wait to go back. No tours of the Gerkin, the Walkie Talkie, the Shard, the "inside-out building", aka Lloyd's of London, or any of London's other stunning unusually designed buildings?
Some things you got wrong, and some things you got right. That pub you went into, the Town of Ramsgate, there was also a hanging post in their beer garden with the noose still tied to it's poat For example, the Turks Head wast where they filmed the Legend, it was further up the road past the Sports Centre and you follow it around to the right; opposite the youth club on the right there is the Turners Pub where it was filmed. I don't know if you mentioned this in other videos, but the metal bollards along Wapping High Street were old cannons. I was brought up in Wapping on Pruson Street
Nice walk today I enjoyed it. Can't wait to see more soon. What is the weather like in England.? In Canada we have fall weather. Your history videos are always enjoyable and relaxing have a great day greetings from Canada 😀
I did a sponsored run around this area in 1982, so much more pleasing to the eyes then. In fact, even the blood soaked Victualing Yards of Sammy the P's time would be better than what is there now.
The word wharf comes from the Old English hwearf, cognate to the Old Dutch word werf, which both evolved to mean "yard", an outdoor place where work is done, like a shipyard (Dutch: scheepswerf) or a lumberyard (Dutch: houtwerf).

Hey Sinead IDK who told you that WHARF meant something else but it does stand for warehouse at river front. Not only will it tell you that on Google, but I also asked 4 different people that I know who are all on active duty in the United States Navy and they all said the same thing. So Sinead my dear YOU were in fact correct
My home town had both a "Bluecoat" and a "Greycoat" school. Blue is the colour of charity. The schools had links to both royalty, and the clergy, but were not directly controlled by the CoE. Greys on the other hand were directly managed by the church, the first being founded in the parish of St. Margarets (the little church built up against the side wall of Westminster Abbey).
Sinead, I have no words about what's going on. Queen Elizabeth was queen before I was born, for me she has always been the face of the UK. I will have to watch this video later; I also owe you a coffee for the last vid. Stay strong.....

@@Sineadlondontourguide it’s one of those words we take for granted. So when you said about it. Had me curious and I had to know it’s meaning 😂 x

I am Afrikaans which is a language derived from dutch and "werf" makes sense to me. In Afrikaans "werf" also means yard.
