biggie is just my #1 favorite rapper ever. i started listening to him at an age that i could sort of relate to the lyrics. my best friends were dealers. i never lived it, i didn’t want to be about it, but i understood it. lyrics like “it’s the ones that’ll smoke blunts with ya, seen ya pictures, they’re prob the ones to come and get ya” like that ish is so accurate

Cube is the west coast legend. Dre and eazy are legends of course, but cube made nwa hard with his self written ryhmes. Then, when he split( had the BALLS to call out jerry because of the eazy e favoritism) he was topping the charts with his solo stuff, while nwa fell off....so for me, cube is the ultimate O.G. and lets not forget the greatest hood movie ever FRIDAY. Starring, and written by who? ICE CUBE, thats who....and thats why i choose him...
I'm an East Coast kid, but Death Certificate is the greatest Hip Hop Album of all time to me. The Cinematography of that album is 2nd to none.
I think literally the same but for Ready To Die.... Cinematography? Doesn't get better when you have Things Done Changed, Su*icidal Thoughts, Everyday Struggle, Warning, Gimme The Loot, Juicy on the same album...

Remove Biggie's albums from hip hop is one thing. But removing Ice Cubes albums from hip hop would have a devastating effect. Remove Straight Outta Compton, Amerikka's Most, Death Certificate, Predator, Lethal Injection and Playa's Ball and the Friday franchise and the Barbershop franchise and much more. I wasn't a big fan of Cube with WC and Mac 10 but many people loved that too.

@@brainwashed1542 the WEST COAST AND RAP, rappers and singers from West like Kendrick, Vince Staples, Schoolboy Q (other TDE artists too) Tyler, Game, Roddy Rich (especially all the compton mfs they wouldn't have such a big role model) not even West side rappers but other rappers like Cole have quoted and named Ice in his songs a decent no of times. Biggie may be the better artist but Cube had much better discography and had more overall influence, even his peers like MC Eiht, DJ Quik, Ice T have said Cube and the NWA put the West and especially Compton on the map (and ofc Cube was the most important guy in NWA, he wrote lyrics for himself, Eazy and Dre)
Two COMPLETELY different approaches to rap. The difference between West Coast and East Coast rappers was so much during that time. West was all about the attitude and characterization and celebratory stance of gang life. East was the complete opposite. Those cats told intense stories and were poets. You've no idea how important Biggie's albums are to Hip Hop lol

I love Biggie! I think he's an MC's MC. Imo he took the wordplay and raw wit to another level. I still hear his influence in a lot of today's better rappers, hell B.I.G. even influenced rappers that were his peers at the time. Top notch storyteller as well. I really believe he would have really shone as an artist apart from Puff. It would be cool to live in a world where B.I.G. would have been blessed to have as many records as Cube.
Having typed all that I still say Cube. Haha. I don't think Cube was going for wittiness as much as he was grittiness. Between his contributions to N.W.A. and (imo) his first 4 releases he proved himself to be much more than an MC, but a voice that flexed the muscles of Hip Hop's potential to be a force against American status quo. He was a gifted storyteller too with range..I mean "Once upon a time in the projects " and "A Gangsta's Fairytale " is on the same album! Respect to B.I.G, but if I have to choose it's Cube.

Ice Cube is not a better lyricist. N.Y raps has always been intricate with wordplay and more complex than Westcoast rap. If you don't believe me ask any other hiphop head.
Now the latter part I agree with you on. I'm 50. I always remembered ot was the west coast with the beat and the east coast with the lyrics overall. Biggie made the equivalent of three epic lps. He's my all time fave MC, but I need to understand why people pick Cube (not Jay). From Straight Outta Compton to Lethal Injection, Cube was flawless.

The problem is people are too fixated on wordplay. Did BIG have better wordplay, sure. Who talked about more things though? Cube. Subject matter is just as important. Sometimes an mc could have crazy wordplay and not say anything at all, whereas another can be quite basic, but say something more meaniful. (like A Chuck D or a Dead prez or a Cube). when a rapper is conscious, im checking for what he is talking about not how slick he is with words. it's cool, but not necessarily needed. Hey I like Big Daddy Kane's crazy rhyme schemes back in the day, but I also like X-Clan.
Dr. Suess was the OG of wordplay. Think about it. And I like what you said about word play because I said the same similar thing. Word play doesn't really tell a story. It's basically rhyming words.

Big head the whole industry Shook and bowing down in the years that he was around. And the growth from his first album to his second album was crazy. Big was doing things in his storytelling that was literally literary elements like foreshadowing. The only thing that anybody got on big is the fact that he wasn't around long enough to see his growth. But if you see his growth from the first album to the second album and then if he starts talking on some political stuff too which might have happened......

Ice Cube is one of my favorite rappers until he stopped being creative. When he 1st came out he reminded me of 50 Cent. You couldn’t tell where he was from. He was just dope. Biggie is definitely better but after Amerikkka’s Most Wanted he went to West Coast. I don’t like that East Coast took care of him when the West turned their back on him after the battle. He owes us another East Coast banger. Death Certificate was dope. Was a blend of both coasts
