Playing PS2 Games On This Rare Controller Screen Accessory

- There was something so charming about the PS2 generation. The games were amazing of course. It was a large technical leap from PS1. And also there were some ridiculous accessories from third party manufacturers. Including this whacky one from Hip Gear. They decided this was a problem that needed solving 20 years ago. You need to be able to play your PS2 from this tiny 2 inch screen, JUST in case your old man wanted to watch the game on TV. Or maybe your brother wanted to watch Totally Spies. I don't know, I'm not a doctor. But I'll tell you what they didn't watch. The PS2.

Goosebumps..
Creepy but satisfying. 😂

The PS2 will always have a special place in my heart. Memories...❤
Silent hill 2 & Smack down vs Raw had me on a chokehold for years in the ps2 😔
PS2 is the one, I have so many memories with that
I'm still playing PS2. There's so many games that I missed out on from the 2000s that it's become like a brand new experience for me. Plus it's nice to not be forced to use the Internet and downloads.
Bruh, it’s the GOAT.
That was my childhood console
I would keep my PS2 fat in my work desk drawer and use this controller to watch movies while working 😂
That's a great plan. 😂
Just use your phone?
@@beatlesboy95Couldn't really do that in the early 00's, lol.
"3,6,9 damn she fine" that OG NFS Underground 1 music man, ah the memories
IKR?
@@NFSBeast2365Midnight Club DUB Edition, too. MOODS
I have 2 of these stupid things because Best Buy was blowing them out at $5 a pop. For some reason, I thought "hey why not?". I could have gotten 2 happy meals instead.
Sell me one? I'm being serious 😂 I wanna play San Andreas whilst my kids are awake
@@sssj806brother. There are much easier ways to play SA without your kids seeing it. LOL
@@StewDogR oh I know, I have emulators on my phone and that, but I collect retro gaming stuff anyway and prefer to use hardware anyway
Nice story, no one cared
@ramrodbldm9876 you liked your own comment didn't you 😂
"Early thousands living rooms" So, like, 1004? 🤣
lol😅
The speakers surprised me! Thanks for going through all the trouble to document this contraption 😂
My PS2 was in my room. I had a comfy stuffed chair that swiveled. Weekend I would get lost in a game for hours. I was not allowed to play on weekdays. I didn't tell everyone I played video games. It is great strategy in the real world. Figuring out how to do stuff fast.
This is PS Vita’s grandpa!
that would be the PSP I'm pretty sure, or the PocketStation if you wanna get really weird
bro 10:31 had me in fucking tears 😂😂😂
I chuckled but it wasn’t that great.
@10:32 - that face 😂
Oh Ryan… we are just getting older and can’t see lol. Had we had that at the age of 8 that would have been the coolest accessory (even with a small screen we would have found a way to make it work).
Y'all remember picture and picture modes on tvs back in the day? I'd be sitting there with a little box in the corner and no sound, happy as a clam.
I used to do that with a hi def tv I had. I miss picture in picture. I don't see why it's not offered on modern TV's. I loved watching two shows at once.
@@lchambers56people before tiktok:
@@lchambers56Samsung tvs did that in 2012. You could have sports going in the corner while you were playing PS3
"Do you guys not have phones?!?!"
Picture and picture still exists … cable tv box remote has button for it … even apps use it like TH-cam premium
I never thought someone would say this controller is rare when I have 20 of them my stores that sell used games have these in stock
I love the novelty of it but even for early 2000s standards, realistically, if you had the money, you'd just go for a smaller TV for portability or just bring the TV closer to the bed; nonetheless, this is pretty cool and if I saw a friend have this I'd get excited.
This reminds me of the '4Gamers' branded 5.4" screen addon I had for my Gamecube. One year I decided I _had_ to have it, so got it as a Christmas gift. I also had a battery pack (same brand I think) that clicked onto the bottom of the GC. But I think the battery life was 1hr to 1.5hrs at most (maybe even sub 1hr).
I do have some fun memories using it though, in the early 2000s as a teenager, doing goofy stuff like "camping" in the garden with an extension cord out to the tent, so I could play the GC and my portable DVD player. XD
we used to have a miniature television which resembled a Game Boy and I remember watching NFL listening to the radio and playing Gran Turismo 3 all on a screen not unlike that accessory.
I would like to see you try this controller on a PS3. The console does have the same A/V port as the PS2. As for using the controller itself on the PS3, you could use a PS2 to PS3 adapter.
The adaptor and AV for sure it's just if another port or the image can't but otherwise I think it should be possible too.
I truly hope PS+ Premium starts giving love to the PS2 library.
I would go as far as replaying the games we already have, like RE4 and the DMC trilogy with that sweet “rewind” feature!
I'd love a "Sega Genesis Classic" version of the PS2! In Genesis they made it so that it feels like your back in the 90's with a simulated room, games on a shelf, In-game day and night cycles and ambient sounds like crickets chirping. Imagine all that but an early 2000s version
@@SyfoManyou can use PSVR1 on it too.
I mean the ps2 emulator is clearly not done yet, not that I understand why its taking so long. Re4 and DMC are kinda wasted choices though since they already have remastered ports. I think other notorious ps2 games should definitely take the spot. Heck I haven't tried no one lives forever 1 & 2 and I would love to give them a shot.
That's 4K resolution for PS2 😉
I really like obscure and novel things like this. I'm wondering how a PS1 game like Spyro would look on the screen.
Psp could play Ps1 games you purchased on the Ps3 Psn Store
Always a good day when starting with a Mystic video 👌
20 years ago mini screens were all the rage remember the video now’s I had one as a kid and loved and it was cool all my cartoons were in black an grey pure nostalgia back then miss those days.
I essentially had this for the original Xbox. I may have used it once to actually play games. It had a male and female composite video connector on the controller that would allow you to do video pass through. So you would plug the male composite video leads into the female composite ports on the controller cable. The most use I got from it is when I was grounded and my mom remove the tv from my room. I connected the cable to my VCR/DVD player and ran a composite cable to the controller to watch cable TV.
I remember hearing about that accessory but never saw one
Is that a Melissa shirt?😍
Thanks. Something that I absolutely do not need, but now ironically absolutely need.
I didn’t hear the ps2 fan until the last few minutes of the video. Now it’s all I can hear.
Might also want to check out the Olympus Eye Trek. I used to use it at night when I was supposed to be sleeping as the TV would project too much light and be noticed by my parents.
1:35 something happened down stairs..
You should try using one of those Gameboy magnifying classes on that tiny screen. Maybe it'll help more
saw this go live before I was about to fall asleep and thought your cat had grown several sizes for a bit.
Well...who needs a gameboy sp when you carry an entire ps2 with this thing?
Now I want a t-shirt with a giant picture of my cat's head on it.
Interesting.
Strange that they didn't also simply built a mini screen that clips on a standard PS2 controller.
There is some like it I think I have seen before somewhere. I searched eBay and found a Joytech bundle. I wasn't sure if mostly homebrew hardware attachments or of I could find many third party screen attachments but yeah first party none to knowledge other than PS1 LCD
But I more so know of the PS1 LCD, GameCube third party one and Series S screen.
Even a PS5 third party one exists I think and not in the PS3/360/4/Xbox One bag screens either that are a thing.
This is a pretty neat controller. Definitely a nice collectible accessory that has a surprising amount of display customization as well as an added bonus turbo setting.
I had one for the GameCube, but just sold it somewhat recently. Those are pretty rare. Still have one in sealed for Xbox OG and kind of don't want to open it. Thinking of picking up one of these for the PS2. Sure would've been nice if the display was at least a half inch larger.
PS2 KING'S OF ALL CONSOLES!
Much respect loading up Jak II and also getting this for all to see. Can't wait for more videos 🤝
Oh man I used to have one of these silly things. I didn't use it too often and I'm not entirely sure what happened to it. Thanks for reminding me this existed because I had completely forgotten about it lol.
I played PS2 on my 5 inch black & white portable CRT TV at my mom's work. Usually Freekstyle. Wasn't easy in B&W... but I did it.
I played a lot of PSO and SA2B on my GameCube hip gear controller. I loved that thing
@mystic keep these coming a lot of cool and rare PS3 accessories I just bought the move wheel as it compatible with a lot of PSVR games
This peripheral could be good for game capturing and live streaming because it already has the passthrough connection built into it.
Growing up I got to play on the big fat PS2 then I had the slim PS2 as well loved playing God of War the original GTA Trilogy on it and the SmackDown vs Raw series the PS2 was a blast.
Younger me would've used this, and my family would've been more worried about me
why worried tho?
love your videos Mystic! whats that tv you are using? looks compact and the picture quality is great! Also, dont know if you covered this in your channel previously but would love to know your thoughts on the Sony Bravia PS2 Built in tv (KDL-22PX300)! take care keep on going on
Something like this for the Gamecube would have been useful for those visits to my grandmas house, at the time they only had two TVs and one was in the living room. Later on i got a PSP so fighting to use the TV wasnt an issue later on. But i do see my younger self enjoying this device regardless of the screen size.
I remember seeing the screen that attaches to the console but nvr a controller
Thanks for toughing it out for us
I never seen or heard of this! I might of gotten this I use to Travel alot way back when... Thanks for this upload bro. You gotta get another one and Sup it up.
I had one from a different brand with digital buttons. I spent all my birthday money on it when I was a kid so I could play my sister’s PS2 outside her room xD I wish I still had that controller it was cool af. I took the screen apart and put AV plugs in the holes on the hinge. I took that portable TV everywhere. Especially since I made my Genesis and Later my own PS2 battery powered off of a old laptop battery. 👌 San Andreas in class inside of a hot ass backpack xD
Thanks for the quality entertainment on my lunch break. A fellow Jak 2 enjoyer ❤
Such a weird memory I forgot……working at toysrus I used to see all these INTEC pieces of garbage we had to try to sell. But I hated all of them. Nothing good came from INTEC.
4:37 your subpost to move it with the bottom bit of it the little dot is telling you where it is at, a lot of people get this confused
I used to have that Vizio tv like 10+ years ago :3
I’ve never heard of that. Honestly that would’ve blown my mind as a kid
Can not wait one more week and then I get to play my PS2 again plugging it up to an old TV memories ❤❤❤❤❤
I was so sure you were going to at least play the opening cinematic to kingdom hearts when I saw the save on the memory card lol that thing is so interesting and I never knew anything like it existed
Always the Miata! I started NFS Unbound yesterday, and went straight for the mx-5
This is better than the PS Portal!
I had a tiny room in my closet where I had my PS2 and a small TV; I would've loved this thing for late night gaming so I wouldn't wake anyone up.
Uaaghhh my eeeeyes! Thanks for sharing this. I would have loved this screen as a kid!!!
Wow I used to have this many years ago. No idea where it is now, but I need to find it!
Didn’t know this thing existed until today actually pretty cool and useful to use if you want the tv for something else and want to play your ps2, would be really great if you could buy something like this that you could copy your ps2 games onto to play anywhere bet it would sell really well
All th physical ps5 games. When you want to get back to them and realize the crazy big patches to download let alone most taking 45 minites to over an hour to install from slow disc drive you start to realize digital collection is just better. Especially with 1 gig fiber internet up and down. I download a complete patched game 100 gb in 14 minites while my physical version takes over an hour to install a incomplete In most cases broken version..... GG in 20 yrs when you want to get back to those. Let alone gsmeswapping. IM so glad I decided to start a digital collection and hop in and out without swapping a disc. That said retro physical games all day.
That opening is why I have it as my ringtone in my iPhone lololol
You should really play the remastered jak and daxter and jak 2 on pc. They even have player made custom levels
would be cool to see it modded with an upgraded modern screen. the cable can probably grab all the pixels and it's just the old screen that has too few.
Reminds me of the disappointment called the PS portal. So laggy it’s basically a paperweight now
I would have saved up my allowance to have this back in the day.
This is like playing a full fledged console game on an Apple Watch...
10:29 LMFAO HAHAHAHAHAHA OOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Love this, reminds me of the GameCube screen
thats pretty cool
I had this. It was awesome. Ps1 games that did not use analog would be able to use them with this.
Makes me wish I had not lost the tiny 1" monochrome CRT I yoinked from a scrapped VHS film camera, it worked and I did NES on it back in the day. Maaaaaan can you imagine PS5 on it.
No, imagine the latest Star Ocean game with its font size instead.
10:30 best part of the video 😂
I wish Ryan had filmed it when it shows the ps2 logo, I really get off on that ☺️
That screen the size of my grandmas phone
I had one of those controllers, although it was a different brand. I think that screen may have been been bigger on the one that i had though.
I loved it however. It was comfortable to hold(although a bit top heavy), it had great speakers too.
I know it may be hard to go back to something like this for some, due to the screen quality and size. Smartphones have spoiled us.
Your shirt reminds me of seananners. Prime mw2 era.
If it had a better screen, this could be very useful even today.
I need you to beat shadow of the colossus on that
Every screen was smaller back in those days. Our eyes could handle it cuz we were younger and more dialed in to smaller stuff cuz that's all we had.
very cool
Dude I have one of these and love it. GameCube xbox ps2 Dreamcast GBA windows XP best Videogame generation of all time
First video I've seen without a young and reckless shirt lol unless it is and the label is on the tag lol
Great vid Ryan
I like to play PS2 games on my Steam Deck
I love your cat :3
Oh the Hip Gear. Thanks to an old Frame Rater video heard about the Xbox version and mentioning the PS2 one. Or the LGR Sony HMD video. There is third party screens for GameCube forget if PS2/Xbox also and not Hip Gear branded.
The cables, the heat, the dials they seem ok but probably tedious I assume in person besides the novelty.
Imagine Pocket Station to VMU to this besides the PS1 LCD or later with Wii U, Portal, PSP remote play.
Even third party console bags with screens are overkill.for PS3/360/PS4/Xbox One in the Console handhelds video with the Hyperkin NES/SNES or thr Nomad/Turbo Express.
The hook ups just to play off the TV ah how annoying but irs what it needed to make it pass through. As annoying as PSVR1 but makes sense.
But the controllers are a fair third party controllers I guess (never experienced any of them myself) and it being the screen version of thr controller qhoch is not surprising there is two versions that is supposed to be a benefit but aren't.
Still a cool novelty.
Like PS1 LCD I think these are cool but they can't do split screen of course they weren't able to work around that or weren't made for the controller on mind so yeah.
Still cough something not even PS Portal should be made able to do woth co-op games Sony to do but nope. Thanks Sony no dual screen no split screen. Missed opportunity.
Id your going to make it exist make it exist woth some on and off tv co-op.
Just because no COD split screen like Wii U doesn't mean you shouldn't be able to have It Takes Two or something patched to offer it or ma y games consider it. Or even better Indies that laughed at it actually want to make games around it.
But nope be simple and straightforward and disappointing. Thanks.
PS2 accessories reminds me I still have a replica mini UZI machine gun light gun for the PS2. It's pure black and looks very realistic, none of this primary colour nonsense. But then again in the UK the police aren't going to shoot you for having it 🙂
I had tbis conteoller too, but I think I destroyed the screen part of it in pure rage while playing Need For Speed Underground
Put that Game Boy magnifying glass add-on on top of this.
I hope your enjoying my invention! Thought of this in 1998..
To the window!!
Hip Gear made some neat shit.
What was the power source you used I found one of these controllers but need a power plug in
Crash Twinsanity is one of my favorite games of all time 🔥🔥🔥
This was a interesting device and I have seen a similar device for the Nintendo GameCube. You should have tried a JRPG to see how it goes. Cool video. ^_^
I just realised for some reason TV sizes is a thing where even in Europe we always use inches to tell size 😁 why is that lol😂 but it does feel normal in that context for some reason, never really even thought about it until he showed size of that screen in cm 😁
