  • Final Fantasy XIV 1.0 gameplay exploring Thanalan.

    I no longer have the gaming laptop, so had to make compromises in game settings and video capture to keep it as smooth as possible, including recorded video resolution to 852x480, which was then upscaled to 720p for the final video.
    Please let me know if you find the footage is acceptable compared my previous longer video. It will help me decide whether it is worth continuing to capture and upload footage, or wait until I have more powerful hardware again.
    A huge thank you and shout out to the hard working efforts of the Project Meteor team for making this possible.

    There is something about this that makes this look very immersive. Its probably the camera angle. The game looks way more grounded. Hard to put it in words. Thank you for the footage

    • @wilddragonchase
      @wilddragonchase ปีที่แล้ว +1

      its the camera range. you can only pull the camera a short distance away from you (this is similar to FFXI). 2.0 allowing for a birds eye view does take that away from you, let alone hubble telescope mode.

    • @arcadema
      @arcadema ปีที่แล้ว

      @@wilddragonchase yep, camera distance plays a surprisingly huge part in how connected people feel to the character. This is why a lot of third person over the shoulder action games take such an approach to their camera in the first place. Connection with the player.

      @@arcadema yeah from my own experience with FFXI it feels way more immersive than FFXIV. the UI is also a lot cleaner and 90% of the screen is just the environment around you. your health bar is in the corner and the chat log can be hidden. no hotbars or even a minimap. (theres a radar/compass tho). makes a huge difference

      It's that the world actually looks big unlike in ARR where everything is tiny.

    • @moço_aquele
      @moço_aquele ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sakurya972 I dunno, the maps in the expansions are all pretty large. The ones in ARR can be a bit small at times though, particularly within the cities.

    I find the footage acceptable, especially considering this is what many 1.0 players were looking at when they actually played. I could run on max settings outside of town, but once inside, I had to turn them way down and it was STILL choppy.

    • @wilddragonchase
      @wilddragonchase ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i miss this a lot. they used loading tunnels tho. so in uldah u could never walk out the front door without going through a covered corridor.
      i also miss that all 3 starter cities were 1 zone only

    • @harrylane4
      @harrylane4 ปีที่แล้ว

      At this point they'd be able to, since PCs are more powerful, the game is (comparatively) well-optimized, and the game isn't restricted to "what would play on the PS3"
      I don't know if they'd ever rework the initial 3 city-states at this point, but it would be neat.

    • @wilddragonchase
      @wilddragonchase ปีที่แล้ว

      @@harrylane4 i wish they'd rework the 3 starter cities, as well as some of the 3 starter regions to be be less fragmented (like clearly outer and upper la noscea were intended to be one zone). but in a way theres very little value in doing this by now
      i don't think they would ever reimplement seamless zoning from starter cities tho because expansion zone lines had implied distances built into them and it wouldnt be consistent. i also dont think PS4 could handle this without significant load times either.

    Crazy how the dungeons were literal caves linked to the outer world, and now they are instances. It’s really interesting to see how they connected together seamlessly. 1.0 was a slog of a game but if the original director was more open minded and didn’t use the horrible graphics engine they chose; it could have been a true FFXI 2.0.

      if you have an ssd the loading screens don't exist anymore. you get most a brief, black screen. i know what you mean though. you can thank the fact it needed to run on the PS3 for why it had to be split into areas.

    Thank you for uploading a gameplay video of FFXIV 1.0 The original 14 before SQ change and remade everything into a somewhat new game which is FFXIV Arealm Reborn.
    I like Arealm Reborn but I fell in love with the original FFXIV ever since I was a 7th Grader in Junior High back in 2010. Even if I didn't play any of the Beta for 1.0 I really enjoyed watching game play videos from other TH-camrs and uploaders yet always and still want to play 1.0 . Something about 1.0 just attracts my interest but also my heart . Not sure what but maybe the environment design, asthetics, and original OST are the reasons why ...
    If only both FFXIV were playable and their own games; perhaps both sides of 1.0 and Arealm Reborn can be happy to which version their heart lies in.
    Speaking of a game having two different playable versions . Phantasy Star Online 2 (PSO2) was really interesting in the concept of having Base PSO2 AND New Genesis PSO2; which are both PSO2 but Base is the original game and NGs is the new version game which they incorporated open world, fast combat, and etc.... Both PSO2 are great games in their own ways because they both have their own differences yet a few things that are similar.
    If only FFXIV 1.0 and Arealm Reborn had the option of co-existing together as seperate games ; it would spark the hearts of players and gamers.

      Check out the documentaries on it, they're pretty thorough on why it was such a disaster

      They had to downgrade a bunch of areas because they were practically unplayable on PS3. One of the things 1.0 has over 2.0 is definitely in the visuals department, though post-ps3 expansions started to catch up.

    • @jakoski
      @jakoski ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep. Travel between areas was seamless, but there were still "loading screens" in the form of long corridors and hallways to hide the game unloading the previous area and loading in the new one. You can see an example of it with the cave at the 4:35 mark.

      UI was slow and unresponsive. Clicking through it took ages. There were no quests other than leves and MSQ every 5 levels. The maps were repetitive and boring. There were no jobs, only classes. Levelling up was a pain, as mobs were pretty powerful. You couldn't take on more than one at a time before you were pretty high level. Aquiring gear was a pain, as vendors didn't sell any, and there were no market boards. You had to craft it yourself, or know someone who could craft it for you. The combat was slow and unresponsive, took several seconds from inputting command to actually performing it. FFXIV 1.0 reviews were clear, this was a bad game. It got 4.0 for a reason. Cutscenes were cool, but there weren't that many.
