I was in that jail numerous times in the 90's and early 2000's. 3-Main, which was located on the Main St. side of the jail was called "The Jungle" because it was crazy overcrowded, where in dayrooms built for 30 inmates they put up to 54 dudes in there. People sleeping on the floor, even by the toilet area. In the summer of '95 we had a serious heatwave with temps in the upper 90's to 100°F and it was miserable. Downstairs in 1-1 or reception, you had inmates withdrawing from heroin addiction (I was one of them) and they only gave us thorazine and it was hellatious. Some of the C/Os were cool, others were straight assholes and physically abusive, and at times they sic the dogs on some of the inmates at the jail. I left for good on Jan. 3rd, 2001, got my act together, and I've been clean for almost 24 years, by the grace of God. I'm glad they tore that place down.
people who have never been in "the system" dont know what they're looking at, this a city jail not a prison. you can wind up in this for unpaid parking tickets or whatever trivial shit. the guards have a culture, everyone is treated like animals, or less than. you can easily end up dead from them or an inmate and they don't care at all. you can be sharing a cell with a mass murderer, you had a DUI. you are both treated the same.
@@kenn.301 its still a pre-trial facility regardless of how many state inmates are housed there. The point of his statement was if your arrested for a menial crime you could be sent to a place where your treated as less than human and your housed with high risk inmates. I appreciate the correction but the specificity of county or city makes no difference in overall conditions of the jail especially when they are pretrial mixed with post trial. If you are arrested outside city lines where do you think they take you? It makes it even worse when you consider state inmates are housed in the jail along with pretrial inmates because you have high risk or potentially more violent inmates housed with someone in for as little as an unpaid fine.
Last visit was back in 2018/2019. This was surreal to watch and walk through this hell hole with you guys. I really wish you could’ve captured footage of the basement as that was more or less “holding” until you were assigned a unit I.e “3-G-2” (3rd floor, Grand St side, section 2) and lemme tell you, that place was ATROCIOUS. To people coming in for a couple days due to traffic violations to junkies coming in and coming down off their highs, man I have some horror stories from that place lol job well done boys! Glad it’s finally gone 🤞🏽
I'm from Bergen county, 15 minutes from Passaic county, that sign at the beginning about this is not a country club was them saying Bergen county jail is a walk in the park.. Passaic county jail was a hell hole
I was there a year ago for warrants that I didn’t even know I had ! They just booked me in that exact room you filmed gave me goosebumps watching it because it was soooooo dirty in there ! But after they did my mugshots and finger prints and I saw a nurse they brought me to Hudson county jail until I saw a judge and was released so glad that they are demolishing it it was very inhumane the small place I was in.
Yeah I was there from 2002 to 2003 and whenever they would load us in the elevator like sardines, the officer would say, “Make the guy in front of you smile.” 😂
I brought many people here in the 90s. We called it the Grand Street Hilton. It was not a place you wanted to stay. They started pulling it down in Oct of 24
My dad had to do H-Vac at this jail just about monthly. One of his stories he told to me that stood out most, was that one time he had accidentally brought his knife in with him, he turned to the guard walking him in and said, "I left my knife on me what do you want me to do?" The guards response: "It's probably best you keep it with you". Insane to even think about
Yo this is crazy! I grew up 5 minutes from the jail and spent a few months on RG-3. It was a madhouse. Drugs, violence, chaos, corruption. I was more afraid of the guards than other inmates. As long as you stayed out of the way and weren’t some punk mark and kept your head down, you didn’t have any issues. Knowing the layout of the surroundings, I’m impressed you were able to get in and out without being detected. I didn’t know they were demolishing it though and haven’t been down to that area in over a year so things could’ve changed I suppose. Thanks for this video ! Really brought back memories. Haven’t watched the full video yet but can’t wait to see if you pass the “This is not a country club” sign 🤣🤣🤣🤣 one of the first things you see when you get into the basement where they would do your intake processing.
Yeah and now everyone goes to the "great"Salem county jail ".. total hell hole with the black suits beating you.. that's why they don't wear name tags on their shirts so you can't right up grievances on them.. despicable thugs
❤I’d love to come along with you guys and navigate / narrate real time for the viewers from someone who’s Been in this jail almost every part of the jail
So I was there for just over 3 years fighting a case. In 3 main, 4 main, and 2g4 - which was in the video. Recently- just last year, intake was still open and Sheriffs officers still staffed the building. Intake was the area at the beginning of video. I know this because I know one of the Sheriff Officers that worked there. She works somewhere else now. But people arrested were brought there, processed, and sent to Bergen and Hudson county. There was no AC in the building and at one point in 2g the ventilation started leaking. It got to the point there was a foot of water everywhere 😮 literally almost covering the bottom bunks. This went on for more than a week. Eventually they moved everyone. The Passaic County Sheriff committed suicide in a restaurant in Clifton with his service pistol earlier this year. Google for more information… Passaic County is one of the most corrupt in the country and it reflected in the department and this jail… Glad to see it gone.
I also remember moldy food and mice and rats running over the bunks and floors when lights were turned down…..never off. That place no matter your crime wasn’t equivalent to what you dealt with in there.
Nice documentary. The absolute most miserable place I ever worked. There were a handful of really good guys stationed there, but the jail was mainly run by corrupt politicians and officers, and bottom of the barrel scum. If you didn't kiss ass or have political juice you were treated like garbage. I've stopped counting how many people I worked with killed themselves after years of being involved with that place and my heart breaks for them. Work conditions weren't much better. The negativity stemmed from being there daily significantly contributed to the failure of my first marriage. After I won my wrongful suspension lawsuit, I told them to take a hike. I feel bad for some of the guys who lost their jobs but took some satisfaction in seeing the place get torn down. The place was toxic.
After getting arrested 6 times for trespassing, you learn that you do need to whisper. Police get called all the time for trespassing in these buildings. If they hear you first, you're done.
I've been in there a couple of times in my late youth in the 90s, and I tell you what... you weren't strutting around there like that as a "white boy"! :/ I even had a hard time, and I grew up there! It's surreal watching you in there! Thankfully, I grew out of that bull, and I'm an upstanding member of the community now... far away from Paterson! Lol
Red bands from MCC/MDC started getting shipped there in 97-98. The worst of the worst..Their spirits were broken surviving inside 😂 Same time; last tenure of Sheriff (Cross-Dresser) Englehardt. Good riddens to it.
Ive stood in there for 9 months the worst time of my life i seen things unhumane the co's beat me down because i asked for the time to call home so my family would be home and not call 4 nothing u stave they feed you like a 2 year old if you dont have canteen your in trouble i seen fights for things as small as for a packet of mayo stabed with a pencil in the face co's half killed a man because he didnt answer there question fast enough and so much more when you go to prison its like paradise compared to the pcj.but i got my life on track today ive changed my life 23 years today so i would never have to live and be treated like a animal again

You guys should try to get inside the abandoned union county jail in Elizabeth New Jersey. It was just as violent and inhumane as Passaic county . I’ve been to Union County Jail many times. I was on 4B ,6B, 8B, and 10A. What was even worse than Union County jail was union County juvenile detention center across the street in the parking garage. that place was held on earth as a child. I literally watched the detention officers cut down a good friend of mine who hung himself in 2003. The officers stood at the window watching him hang for close to five minutes before they entered the room and cut his sheet off of the sprinkler.. RIP eddie Sinclair. 1985-2003

Wagon Up!!!
A heatwave and in withdrawals. I can only imagine.
God bless you ❤️🙏🏽
trays up.... Praise God, no more waking up sick or in orange waiting for court or a trip to Craf in Trenton....

No, the Paterson city jail is down the road off Broadway. This is the county jail, it also housed state inmates too.
I've never been in jail so I'm doing good so far.

They are trying to reopen it again with the same policies
Thank you for making the distinction!
Thanks!
Thank you so much! We truly appreciate your support.
Glad you got to film it before it got demolished 👍🏻

I am in Bergen County too!
Isn't Essex county jail way worse?
Same temperature that was outside was the same temperature inside 😮
It would be far hotter in the summer. No airflow inside means a cooking building.

Mercer county is disgusting and breaking every single regulation and no one cares
I must've missed the part with the golf course 😂🤣
This was awesome, loved it!
Glad you enjoyed it Mary! This one was fun to explore.
Great explore thanks for sharing 😊
Our pleasure! Thanks for watching Tracy!
Had family locked up here and family locked up in NJSP I heard more horror stories about PCJ then the state prison
Thanks for checking out our video!
🧢🧢🧢🧢
@@Fatman36i was there for a week, prisoners who came there for court would say PCJ was worse.
Man that jail was sweet, the worst county jail is Essex county call the green monster…..
Thanks for watching. Hopefully they abandoned the Green Monster soon as well haha
Definitely wasn’t sweet that’s CAPP 😮
Cumberland county too
Camden county is the absolute worst
Word
5:50 - To get urinals like that, you either have to be locked up, or you have to work at Cyberdyne Systems in "Terminator 2"😆

Thanks for checking out our video! I will be in Montana next year, I'll make sure to stop thru Bozeman.

Like the previous sheriff. He knew things but off’ed himself before the FBI could investigate
Dumb question but how would inmates get onto the top bunks?
Hop up
What are they planning on building after the demolition?
Mixed used housing/ retail . I think by Florio
Office building and parking lot

How were you able to get in?
Criminals just get more stupider each day 😂
Yeah I was locked up there I'm only about a 10-minute drive from downtown. I remember that place was one of the dirty jails that I was in
Why would u put a jail right in the middle of a neighborhood
I thought the exact same thing when we arrived.
Same spot where ya put ya hands i was doing the same goin down through all those doors back to cells
