    I met one of my best friends by going to jail for six months. Shared a room with him for months while we awaited sentencing. I ended up getting moved to a program and on the way out, he gave me a couple bags of coffee and a rack of Ramen to take since I couldn't buy commissary for two weeks. Now we have both been out for over six years and stay in contact, go to baseball games and just check in on each other. I'm grateful for that aspect of jail.

      Same sort of situation with me bro. I did 6 years and made friends with a guy in there, ended up celling up and became close and trained everyday together backed each other up at all times. and both been out over two years and catch up all the time, go over each other's house and eat with each other's family n go gym n that. I also thank jail for that.

    Back in the 80's when I was in the military, I was wrongfully court-martialed for something I wasn't responsible for. I was given 8 months of confinement. (Yeah, I know. It wasn't much.) When I got to the facility, I was lead through a common area, past barred areas that held a bunch of bunkbeds, all the way to the back, down a small hall. I was placed in a metal box, with bars for a door, a cot, school type desk and that was it. I was allowed reading material, and that was it. Each day, the sergeant that ran the place would come back and see me, and ask how I was doing. I would stand at attention and say "I'm doing fine". After the third day, he asked me again and again, I'd say I was fine. He then said, you know, I don't get you. I asked, why's that sergeant? He said, each day you keep saying you're fine. You never ask to be let out. What's wrong with you? I said, I didn't know I could get out. I thought this was going to be my cell for the next 8 months. So, why fight something I can't change. I've got food, a place to sleep, reading material. That's all I need, so I'm fine. I'm not like depressed, or upset or anything.
    He said, and here I thought maybe you were crazy or something. You're not supposed to be fine in here all by yourself. Then he laughed and opened the door. He said, I usually let people out the first day, but you kept saying you were fine.
    I had no problem being locked up all by myself. I've always been kind of a loaner, in a way. If something ever happened and I got locked up, I'd rather be in solitary all by myself, than to be around a bunch of hardened criminals that may be looking for a new guy to attack for no reason. Then, one of two things are going to happen. Either I'll kill someone, or they'll kill me. And, I don't like either of those two outcomes.
    Oh, and by the way, I appealed my court-martial and won three years later. I got 3 years of backpay including raises, got my rank back, and since I had one year left on my last enlistment, I went back in. Unfortunately, due to the Clinton cut back on the military, I was among many others on base that was told, your services are no longer required. Pissed me off. Spend 3 years fighting to clear my name, get it all back just to have it yanked from me again. At least they paid me to get out.

      @@DanielBeaton-r1d From what I've found out, trials like mine are actually common. They usually go after doctors and lawyers that didn't do too good in college. Out in the civilian world, they wouldn't get a good job in their career field, but in the military they get experience. That experience goes a long way when they get out. My JAG prosecutor was a new officer, a new recruit. They wanted to get a win under his belt. So, they made some type of deal with my lawyer. My appeal lawyer was telling me all about it. He said he's seen many cases like this. One lawyer takes a hit on this case, and they'll get a win on the next one. He said that one, the charges didn't even fit the "crime". Two, there were no regulations against it, but my officer, the commanders assistant that got the whole ball rolling, was actually at fault. My case was about getting extra money in my pay that the officer was supposed to stop. He was no longer in the military, so they couldn't go after him. They just wanted to make an example out of me. Usually, they'd just ask how you want to pay that money back. One lump sum, or through payments. Even my commander was pissed because they came after me. He said he's never seen this happen before.

    I did 8 on a 12 for Agg assault w/deadly weapon on a public servant in TDCJ (Estelle, Wynne, Dalhart, Hughes, Ellis, Byrd, Holliday, Montford). I was released in 2016 from a halfway house in Houston, with nothing but some clothes and a Pitbull they'd given me. Today, eight years later, I have earned Two master's degrees; a Master's in IT and a Master's in CS/Cyber Security Engineering which I just completed. I received my Bachelor's in Cyber Security four years after my release, while working full-time. Now, after prison, I have the life I should have always lived, clean, sober, and FREE. "CHOICES."

    I was in prison for a bit and the amount of guys on their 3rd, 4th, even 6th bid blew my mind. I don’t think I ever talked to a guy that was actually innocent the whole time. I was guilty. Was a 22 month sentence I got parole in 366 days served by taking every class, program, and job available. That was 2018 when I got out and I’m not on probation or anything now. Been sober since 2021. Realized I had never been arrested when I was 100% sober. It’s a choice, 99% of the time it is a choice to break the law and you get what you get. Lost count how many people I met that I was glad they were locked up. There are evil people in this world, believe that. Truly evil, no chance of changing, wanna just burn it all down type people. Growing up without a father and in poverty clearly plays a role in the outcome of person's life, and we as a society need to invest in those communities and reform the Texas Prison System if they ever expect recidivism to lower. As someone who had no record that ended up doing some years in the CDCR system, one thing I can say is that IF (and really, big if) the inmate has family sticking by them those people are essentially doing time as well. The effect of someone you love being locked away isn’t always talked about but it’s huge. I thought of that seeing the family visiting from California.
    I was lucky enough to be at a prison where the phones were more available than some others and my wife and parents spent a lot of money to keep minutes on their phones so that I could call. Wife also visited once a month as I wasn’t too far from home but many don’t have those luxuries and it’s clear those inmates have it extra hard. That said, those same inmates always seemed legitimately excited when others would get visits and always ask how they went. Beyond the violence and general aggression inside is also a strong brotherhood between those willing to put in the time and effort to speak to one another and without that, good luck.

    • @Weather_Nerd
      @Weather_Nerd 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We also had a few really good programs that were mostly optional but sometimes mandatory if say you got caught with drugs or did something violent (substance abuse programs, criminal thinking etc). I did a 6-9 month, 5 day a week 3hrs a day substance abuse class and it was immensely helpful as I was an oxy addict on the streets, but it was clear some in the class didn’t want to change and only a few of us honestly took part.
      I always saw it like this- if you couldn’t stay clean on the inside, couldn’t change for the positive in some way or another, you’ll likely be adding to the insane recidivism rate. My yard was absolutely flooded with meth, weed, and eventually even heroin probably more so than the average prison yard so I am sure it was extra tough to stay away but it really isn’t a fun place to get high (or drunk on the pruno) or I sure didn’t think so but I watched guys smoke and shoot meth and clean the bathroom vigorously at 2am or fidget with their possessions so maybe others could let their guard down more easily lol. Sad reality, but I did made some good friends inside (NEVER expected that) and the experience helped me grow as a man so somehow I am a bit grateful for the experience. It opened my eyes to a different world and I can never unsee or unlearn any of it.
      Just some thoughts but I was only a minimum security inmate, I can’t speak on level III and IV yards. Still saw some very graphic incidents I wish I didn’t but at the end of the day these are all real people who oftentimes are completely forgotten and it’s sad no matter what some had done or even continue to do.

The people know they’ve done bad things but are still treated like human beings while not framing them as victims or heros, just real people with real lives. He’s like a much better version of Tyler Olivera, someone who try’s to push narratives that were predetermined before the filming. It’s good to see someone let people give honest accounts of their own experiences, no matter how varied they may be.

It was a crazy experience I got to meet a ton of different men with different storys and different backgrounds. Some are great people who made a mistake, but some of the high security inmates at clements is what lead me to leave. All and all a great experience at the age of 21-22. TDCJ-ID CO "the ol' glasshouse unit" I'm so glad to be outta that place.. too bad they didn't let you film more of the unit, it's a fucking literal maze. The ad seg guys have some crazy stories, that's where they keep the hi profile guys. The inmates would burn K wing almost on a daily basis when I was there. They keep that from gen pop tho so of course you wouldn't get to see that wich kinda sucks, you don't get to see what prison life is actually like there. COUNT TIME!! you must've had to edit 3 or 4 of those out 🤣 great vid!
