Wow, great Tutorial. Thanks. I am interested in the fundamentals of fps, from project point of view to timeline to delivering, and working with multi clips of different fps. Is there a dedicated course or are you intending to make a tutorial for this topic? Cheers.
Hey Jean, I've made a tutorial that delves into a little of what you're talking about in terms of how DaVinci Resolve handles media of different frame rates as well as how the program uses AI tools to interprets that footage when changing the speed of the media in post. Hi Tom, great tutorial, when you open the EDIT tab at 16:51 how did DaVinci know how to organise the timeline automatically, all the videos were in order along with the audio and stock footage, did you have to prepare this in advance ? Very cool but the automatic timeline setup is a mystery to me. Cheers 👍🏻
Hey thanks for checking out the course and I'm glad you found it helpful. When I created a timeline out of all of my media that I had brought in, Resolve placed it on the timeline in alphabetical order (numerical first), hence why it came in with that layout. This is the default and to my knowledge you can't change that, unless you are bringing media into your timeline manually of course. Resolve will always bring the footage / music / graphics / whatever media you're dropping onto the timeline in on one video and audio track sequentially, when you first ask it to do so, rather than layering assets over the top of each other which would result in a large number of redundant audio and video tracks but also run the risk of pieces of media overlapping each other and potentially resulting in lost footage on the import. Hope that answers your question!
@@Envato_Tom thanks for taking time to reply Tom, much appreciated. @@toneranger You may have your timeline resolution set to a square aspect ratio such as 1080 x 1080 or 1:1 in ratio terms. If you've filmed the videos in standard 16:9 then you'll want to set your timeline resolution to 1920 x 1080 (remembering we can export in 4K at the end of the process if need be) and this will avoid the black bars that you're seeing on either side. I think the 'square' you're seeing on my recording is the pixel aspect ratio which is a whole different kettle of fish.

You make a good point! 😅 I definitely wanted to keep things flowing in this video to get new learners up to speed as quickly as possible. It sounds like a mini tutorial on proper project organisation might be in order!
Great question. The way to think about it is B-Roll is the supporting imagery that helps to clarify and visualise a point that is being made in either the master interview, piece to camera (often referred to as A-Roll) or voice over that may be happening concurrently. If it helps to think about it another way, A-Roll or footage from A-Cam is capturing the 'important' material, like an interview and B-Roll or footage from B-Cam is off capturing those supporting moments, this might be cutaway shots of the person being interviewed or of the environment that they're being interviewed in or simply this could be footage from another location that relates to what the talent is talking about. That's in the sense of a corporate or commercial, documentary style piece of content. If you want to think about it in a narrative sense, A-Roll would be anything that serves the narration of the story such as the actors delivering lines / interacting with each other, and any significant actions that serve the story. B-Roll would be anything that serves to set the scene like an establishing shot of a house or a dripping tap, things like that. I hope that helped!

Such an on-point video. You covered the basics very well. Ofcourse there is a lot of detail one can go into, but when learning, especially at the beginning, its very important to have palatable lessons that do not overwhelm, which is exactly what this video was. I started editing video on Premiere Pro (since I had the subscription) little over a year ago, but was completely disheartened by the process/workflow. Personally, I felt it was counterintuitive. DaVinci on the other hand seems more fluid, intuitive and most importantly INTEGRATED. I have started with the free version, but I am planning on getting the Studio version right after I get my new MacBook Pro M2 Max. BTW, any comment on the performance of DaVinci on the new M2 MacBooks in your opinion? Better, the same or vastly improved over the intel version? I'll be moving from an intel 2016 MacBook Pro, which, from what I have heard, is an astronomical jump.
Thanks for the review @NishantKursange I'm really glad you got something out of the course! In terms of the Mac / DVR performance I can only speak to my experiences with the M1 chips: I'm currently on an M1 Pro and was previously on the original M1 and both have been buttery smooth and I've had no issues to report (across Resolve and the Adobe suite), I think Apple have nailed their silicon so I can only assume it's going to get better with each generation - but as always with tech stuff, I'm sure there will be some gremlins along the way but for me right now, it's smooth sailing.
Again, this is a beginner editor tutorial but you continue to speak of other things as if we are experts... Please continue. I am trying to hand in here.
Thank you for this video. It was great info! Thank you. The back and forth was a bit too much (from your face and back to the dashboard). I wish I could see your cursor to see what you were clicking.
@@Envato_Tom Thanks for your opinion on the machines. Appreciate it! Looks like Mac+DaVinci will be the way forward for me!😊
God, I'm glad I found your video that helped me

Again, this is a beginner editor tutorial but you continue to speak of other things as if we are experts... Please continue. I am trying to hand in here.

That was incredible 😀
Thank you for this video. It was great info! Thank you. The back and forth was a bit too much (from your face and back to the dashboard). I wish I could see your cursor to see what you were clicking. So I was a bit lost in the beginning and feared that would happen. Keep your picture in picture on the bottom right or top left.

I’ve just started in video. Should I shoot C-log on my canon R5 and color grade or just shoot all-I?
