- Democratic leaders Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi praised the short-term funding deal that is expected to re-open government form Capitol Hill and stated that there will soon be negotiations to strengthen border security. Speaker Pelosi also adds that she'll work with the White House to find a mutually agreeable date for the State of The Union address once the government reopens.

It makes zero sense and it was shocking to me that in such a great democracy so many citizens were affected financially. I was not aware how many Americans lived pay-check to pay-check. What was most appalling was the ;”Let them eat cake” attitude coming from Trump and his cabinet. They are all so wealthy and removed from what life is like for so many of their own people they have lost touch with reality.

I am Australian and we had a Government shutdown in 1975 which created chaos and interference from the Queen and due to the lies in the media by by Rupert Murdoch etc the Conservatives were put in power. It divided Australia and the reverberations still ripple on. No Government will play with the Supply Bill again, it would be suicide for that party
I'm not American either, and what Trump has shown us is that the USA is NOT as strong and powerful as we thought. I think, with the right management, it can be, but from the outside looking in now, it seems very broken and only just treading water. Eye opening.

Democrats in Congress, stand firm about not funding the Stupid Vanity Wall! Border security should focus on staffing, judges, technology advances, maintaining existing border barriers. If Trump tries declaring a state of emergency to get around congress, make sure it gets hung up in court for as long as Trump is in office or longer.
When thinking of the misery caused by the government shutdown I think of how clueless people like Trump, Wilbur Ross and Lara Trump were in their comments and then I think back to 2013 and remember Ted Cruz reading "Green Eggs and Hams" during a filibuster and a government shutdown. This should never be allowed to happen again. These shutdowns should be legislated out of existence.

In the private sector, back pay would be considered supplimental to regular paychecks. Those are taxed at a higher rate.

personally I think that during the gov, shut downs when pay is being withheld should start with their paychecks first. they don't need a payday any way. they are all millionaire already making more money off the backs of us. they need to pass a bill stopping their money to.
I think I heard Sen Swahill (not from a wealthy family) and the little Hawian lady both donated their pay. Maybe others did too but some of the new young ones wouldn't be able to afford it.
