Hahaa, so nice to hear! Wishing you great family time with any music! Here in Oslo (Norway) it’s a winter holiday and a time for cross country skiing and skating :)
@@lassilogren thank you! Spring is coming early here. There are flowers everywhere here in Texas! We are of English heritage, but we really enjoy the mystical and beautiful Finnish folk music. Kudos to you and the rest of Varttina as well, we listen to you all the time! 🙂
I always know it is going to be a good day when I see a new Lassi Logren video! As always, beautiful and inspiring playing. You are able to really show how versatile such a seemingly limited scale can be. Thank you for sharing your music.
Thank you for this Lassi, once again your music just brings me joy, it's so precise, detailed, full of life ! The explanation in the beginning was also really interesting (even without being a jouhikko player).
Thank you Emelie! Full of life - I like that expression. We are sharing some parts of our personalities through our instruments and music. My playing is full of my life - and I could’t be happier if those tunes can be part of others life too. My explanation parts could be a way more precise (like you have on your videos): I said for example that all the three tunes has 6 notes. Not true. The 2nd Jig in C major has only 5 melody notes.
@@lassilogren I'm not even surprised that the scale is even smaller ^^ You manage to make very limited scales into not boring tunes at all ! Yes, through the life you put into your playing. I think that's what makes a great musician, someone I want to listen to : it's when, after the technicalities have been mastered (at least to some degree, as we both know it's never "perfect"), can use them to express deep things, the ones that reach people.
Yes! Certain amount of technique you have to have, as a tool. But I don’t have a patience to listen the music which is based on showing the playing technique or virtuosity. That kind of music could be interesting to check out but is rarely touching me emotionally.
i was looking for bowed strings in music class today and ended up discovering this one! its very interesting and im glad i was able to find your channel, you are an excellent musician!
Thanks @1ghenny! Would like to say the date (or month), but can’t promise that. Anyway, lot’s of new songs are on demo-level.. and some of those has been already performed. Okey.. Year 2024 :)
Yes, I think we (as a band) are the most excited about the new Värttinä music. It is giving an energy to know there are also some other people waiting for the new Värttinä music :)
Hi! The first string C4: I can play the C4 note (as an open string). The middle string G3: I can play easily the notes G3 (as an open string), A3 (an index finger), B3 (a middle finger), C4 (a ring finger), D4 (a little finger). The third string D4, so called melody string: I can play easily D4, E4 (an index finger), F4 (a middle finger), G4 (a ring finger), A4 (a little finger). There is no point to finger the first string C4 (for example to have D4 note by using an index finger), because it is easier to have that D4 note by playing an open D4 string (”the third string”), or finger the middle string (G3) with the ring finger. I’m fingering also the middle string when I need to play the notes lower than C4. For example here I’m fingering also the middle string (the first tune ”Ievan polkka” and the second tune ”Aallon halki”): th-cam.com/video/bPXR2i7trMM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=GcRPqUl3PzmL3ZLQ

Hello @starricerulean1721!
Yeah, you really can find new (and strange) things form YT. Thanks for your feedback, appreciate that!
Awesome! Jigs are one of my favorite things to play in pipe music.
Thanks Dana! It's great that there are jigs on this planet.
What an interesting instrument, it seems like for medieval music
Hello @ekaterina8865,
Yes, Jouhikko is a medieval instrument. The oldest evidence is in the Nidaros Cathedral in Norway, a statue from 14th century.
I seriously love your videos!
Happy to hear @captaintomandthehooligans7106!
oh this is beautiful, you play so wonderfully :)
Thank you @tayloralym!

Yes! 👍
What wood is used for the Jouhikko? Fantastic playing. Thanks.
Hi! My jouhikkos are made by Mr. Rauno Nieminen, the body is alder (one piece, carved) and the top is spruce.
Wooo ! That's a marvelous sound !!
But it looks like you are not even touching the strings ? How do you play the notes ?
Hi! I’m touching the Jouhikko strings with my left hand fingerbacks. That’s a traditional way to play this instrument.
Why don't you ever place fingers on the bottom string to play a note?
Hi!
The first string C4: I can play the C4 note (as an open string).
The middle string G3: I can play easily the notes G3 (as an open string), A3 (an index finger), B3 (a middle finger), C4 (a ring finger), D4 (a little finger).
The third string D4, so called melody string:
I can play easily D4, E4 (an index finger), F4 (a middle finger), G4 (a ring finger), A4 (a little finger).
