    I was lucky enough to meet her and her sister in Massachusetts in late seventies. She belted out this number and others. She could swear a mean streak until my mother reminded her of my presence. She also got her sister to sing I’ve got a girl from Kalamazoo, her signature song. Meeting her was mind blowing for me and my mother. What a joy!!!!❤😊😅😂

    Judy Garland was the original choice to play Annie Oakley, but I believe Betty Hutton was far more suited to it and did a wonderful job. My cousin Betty always reminded me of Betty Hutton. Whilst staying at the Norfolk Royale Hotel in Bournemouth I had afternoon tea with Howard Keel, an extremely nice and courteous gentleman. The part of Buffalo Bill was played by the late Ted Hockridge in a London production that starred Suzi Quattro as Annie. At one time a friend owned the solid silver plated saddle that was presented to Buffalo Bill when he brought his Wild West Show to London. My second wife hated the song No Business Like....
    so I would sing it at every opportunity!

    Betty was perfect for this part. Judy had issues going on and wasn't fit to do the part. Betty said the mgm cast and crew were not kind to her. Robert said it didn't show on film,she said you can't let it. She wanted the part so bad but it was a bad experience for her. Nobody today has the kind of energy she had back then. I think she was great.

    • @eddihaskell
      @eddihaskell 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Judy had issues going on yes, one of the main reasons was that Frank Morgan, a very good friend of hers -- and the man who played the Wizard in the Wizard of Oz (and Dr. Marvel in the first part) became very ill during filming. He died of a heart attack and was replaced half way through the film. He can be seen as the cowboy with the grey hair in the song number. I believe this was one of the scenes that was filmed with Judy Garland but not shown in the complete version of course.

    Betty Hutton complained of how mean everybody was to her at MGM. According to Gerold Frank's Judy Garland biography, Judy visited the set and called Betty a GD SOB. Betty should have said, "For Chrissakes, Judy, grow up. It's not my fault you got sick; someone had to do this friggin' movie. And if it makes you feel better, all anyone's said to me is 'We don't want you, we want Judy', so tell them to give you the part back and I'll be happy to bow out." This was Hutton's best film work anyway.

    What I notice is, whenever the three men sing together without Annie, the voices are dubbed. Except Keel, of course. But there’s no way the other two are producing those precise and melodious harmonies near the end of the number. The collective sound is in no way similar to the solo sound.

      ALL musical movies have the vocal rerecorded post-filming. The actors have to lip sync to their filmed image. It's impossible to capture good vocals on set with only distant boom mics. As to whether the on screen actors are the ones actually singing in the post recording, that's harder to know. Audrey Hepburn was famously overdubbed in My Fair Lady and it's very possible better singers were used here. Except Howard Keel.

      @@cyclone411 Louis Calhern and Keenan Wynn both did their own singing.

      If Calhern and Wynn had been dubbed, the studio would have hired better singers to dub them.

    James,you said you had tea with Howard keel,did he have anything nice to say about Miss Hutton? She said he would go on talk shows and make not nice comments about her years back. Betty said she had a hard time making the movie because the cast and crew resented her for taking over the role from Judy. Judy didn't want the part,she and mgm were not getting along

    Ironically the movie "There's No Business Like Show Business" stages this number MUCH MUCH better than this. They have a whole family singing the song; with a couple women and a couple men; backed up by a chorus. This number works MUCH better that way.
