A rare Winter appearance by 'Mr Baldy-chest' the Sulphur-crested Cockatoo.

'Mr Baldy-chest' is a Sulphur-crested Cockatoo that lost its chest feathers to some kind of disease but somehow he miraculously managed to survive. 'He' regularly visits our garden in the warmer months, but he recently made a rare Winter appearance, taking advantage of some slightly warmer weather to visit our garden. It must be freezing cold to fly around with no feathers on the chest. When possible we try to give him some extra special care and attention. He is quite aggressive, but he is usually outcompeted by the other fully feathered cockatoos.

It's unusual to see a wild bird in this condition. If he had been a pet cockatoo, I'd have thought him to be a feather-plucker due to some sort of anxiety or maybe an abusive living condition. Still, even those birds usually have some remnant down on their chests. It doesn't look like Mr. Baldy-Chest has anything at all, poor guy. Very glad he survived whatever happened, and very, VERY glad that he has people like you looking out for him.

Thanks everyone for your comments about Mr Baldy Chest, a true 'Aussie battler'. He has been visiting our garden during the warmer months for a number of years, so his resilience is quite remarkable.
