A new Soprano to me... But how wonderful is Asmik Gregorian. Brava.. 👏👏👏👏
I heard Gregorian sing these same four songs in Geneva, last year, and her voice had me in tears the whole time (I was not the only one). The experience has made me really appreciate the voice and I now listen much more to her and others’s recordings. Thank you for sharing this!

Song has stayed in my heart and soul-the late, great Ms Jessye Norman.
I understand and agree... Jesseye was one of the greatest Sopranos of all time. Perhaps unfair to compare, but Asmik has a wonderful voice.
Gudula Janowitz is, however, the standard for the Vier Letzte Lieder, and I totally agree. She is outstanding in this genre. She has the perfect voice for it and nows exactly how to sing it. But people will always have their personal preferences, of course.
I’ve heard many recordings I’ve seen it a few times on stage, but I think this one is the best and I’ve said it before you are really one-of-a-kind .

The voice is a beautiful one, but other than the word "tod" her German is bare intelligible. Surprising since she has sung Salome in Vienna. Perhaps since the score was in front of her the text has not been internalized. I love a Stimme diva but there has to be more than a touch of the kunst--otherwise it is just a vocalise.
Bare (ly?) intelligible ? Deutsch ist nicht meine Muttersprache, aber ich konnte ziemlich vieles verstehen.

Christa Ludwig would be appalled at the way the text is handled here. As a German, I don't understand a word. The singer should pay more attention to the lyrics, otherwise she could just warble vowels.
Somewhat amazing - I mean you, obviously a native speaker of German, do not understand A WORD ! Well, I studied German 1973-75 und ich konnte ziemlich viel verstehen. Also, meine Muttersprache ist nicht Deutsch.
@@karilamminpaa8987 Manchmal kennt man den Text und meint ihn zu verstehen, vielleicht ist es das. Ich kenne den Text auswendig und finde die Aussprache einfach nur schlecht.
@@karilamminpaa8987 Possibly you just love the singer and you are blind like a mother . Her German is embarrassing, she is just not a tourist, she is on a big, important stage and should give respect to the poem and music and audience.

I’m glad that I don’t understand German then, because I heard Gregorian sing these same four songs in Geneva last year, and I was in tears the whole time. The experience has now made me want to go to more operas.
We may not all be knowledgeable, technical listeners, like you, but at the age of 72, I realise that music, for me, is much more about the soul than about technique. I have listened to performers with wonderful technique, who have left me cold.

@@mikaelb7735 Eine weitere überbewertete "neue" Sängerin, die einfach nur die schmerzhaften Lücken im Opernbetrieb füllt, weil kaum noch jemand auftaucht, der wirklich gut im deutschen Sopranfach ist.

I wish her well, but she cannot compare to Lise Davidsen in this. It's not only the diction, as was pointed out below, but the voice itself. The music remains beautiful, but only a very few voices (and souls?) can capture the complexity and the depth of this song.
You are right.But did you hear Jessye Norman in this? No one will ever sing it better than her!

Lise Davidsen? Sad that she is now considered by some a standard to compare others to in this repertoire. She has a gigantic top, and upper middle voice, no chest voice, an even keeled tone, mellow timbre, an often rather slow vibrato for her young years and a very bland way with text. Her recent recording of it is very unpleasant. She is a talent but no vocal genius. Her strengths as a singer lie in other places than the lies reertoire. This piece has been sung by the greatest sopranos of the last 70 years so the bar is set very high.

wer nicht einmal die wunderschönen meisterhaften " 4 letzten Lieder" von Richard Strauss auswendig singen kann und permanent auf das Notentablett gucken muss, darf diese Lieder einfach nicht singen!!! Von der katastrophalen Nicht Textverständlichkeit einmal ganz abgesehen. Egal ob schöne Stimme oder nicht!! Vielleicht sollte sich die Dame einmal ein Beispiel and Lucia Popp oder Jessye Norman nehmen...

...wahrscheinlich,weil Sie den Text genau kennen. Ohne Textkenntnis ist das Singen dank sehr "ungewöhnlicher" Vokale nahezu unverständlich.

J'ai repéré des musiciens qui n'avaient pas mis leur masque. La chanteuse non plus n'avait pas son masque. Pourtant j'ai toujours entendu les professeurs de chant dire qu'il fallait "chanter dans le masque".
A lovely voice, I felt she was not fully immersed in the songs also I thought the clothes, hair & makeup terrible!

I love her voice. Clothes and makeup? No cleavage or legs? Relief to see someone not dressed for a "red carpet gala".
Lovely voice & she's a beautiful girl, but her diction with the German is lacking. Also, what's with the outfit? She looks like she just came from a Comicon/cosplay convention. Or is she a huge star wars fan? She looks almost like she either doesn't feel her best or is annoyed to be there by the way she is standing & shifting. Either way, it detracts from her performance. She is incredibly gifted, but to be up there with the greats, she may want to fix those little details, which may seem insignificant, but really do matter.

That wasn't even worth one cent. 1. She's not a "girl," she's a 40-year-old woman for Christ's sake! 2. You shouldn't even be mentioning her physical beauty: that is irrelevant. 3. "her diction with the German" What sort of English is this? Did you actually go to school? 4. "What's with the outfit"? What sort of comment is this? Does it have any relevance to her performance? Neither I nor any other poster gives a f**k about your opinions about Ms. Grigorian's dress sense. and finally, 5. No, she's wasn't "shifting" whatever that means! Perhaps you should either grow up or confine your viewing to Beyonce concerts of whatever.
Es wird mir immer ein Rätsel bleiben, warum man als Künstler*in auf diesem Level , nicht in der Lage sein will, diese Lieder auswendig zu singen. Es scheint, als würde sie an den Noten kleben und es wird kein Kontakt zum Publikum aufgebaut. Von einer Durchdringung des Textes kann da überhaupt keine Rede ein, meiner Meinung nach. Schade für Frau Grigorian und kein gutes Vorbild für jüngere Kollegen*Innen.

Also ich bewundere immer Fritz Wunderlich und Bryan Terfel. Was die an den Texten rausholen ist unglaublich. Man glaubt einen neuen Satz Ohren zu bekommen.
@@cantkeepitin es gibt so viele Sängerinnen, die auch keine Deutsche waren und haben sich mehr Mühe gegeben und hatten auch nciht die fettesten Stimmen, aber man hat sie verstanden und sie sind gut durch das Orchester gekommen: z Bsp Margaret Price, Lucia Popp..
I can't understand a word she says. I don't think her voice is suited to Strauss. It lacks the depth and the dramatic intent and power Strauss requires
