What a line up they had, it couldn't get better than this! Skilled musicians with so much energy and joie de vivre. Love every minute of this performance.
Premiata Forneria Marconi ( PFM ). They're an Italian progressive rock band, which has been around over 50 years. A few of their early albums were also recorded in English.
I first heard of them in 1973. Loved it and wanted to have the first two albums as well, but you couldn't get them in the Netherlands at the time. In 1973 my parents went for a holiday to Milan and searched every recordstore there. And found them. Per un amigo and Storia di un minuto are still in my collection, along with Photos of ghosts, Live in USA (Cook), L'isola di niente, The world became the world, Chocolate kings and Jet lag. Great band!!!
I prefer the Italian version but it’s way cool seeing PFM on American network television. American popular culture was like a different planet half a century ago. They were signed to ELP’s custom label.
Yes. Sadly, it was a very different planet then. Just think: people actually got popular from how well they could play an INSTRUMENT. Try to sell that, today.
And you have to notice that the only places they've HAD nuclear meltdowns are places that don't have Prog keys guys, right? That's not something you can just dismiss. It's gotta be one of nature's laws.
How ironic I was 14 years old living in southern Wisconsin when this was on TV. I did watch this TV show but don't recall seeing P.F.M. on the show. I didn't get into prog until I was about 16 or 17. When I was about 19 I bought P.F.M.'s lp "Chocolate Kings." "From Under" is still in my head even today. I've also researched my own Italian roots and even met cousins from Italy.
Wood veneered synth.. that's the day right there. Doing a bit of Focus yodeling.. Italian rock... 70s...the world was alive with brilliant classic rock coming out from all corners of the World.
Thank you MS for this upload. It is great that we got to see this song not that long after their other song on that night was also uploaded to You Tube
These guys were just incredible and had a lot of fun playing. Fortunately to have seen every show on their 77’ tour in L.A.; The Roxy, The Starwood, and The Golden Bear. Met them several times after the shows. Totally cool and they all spoke good English. A real treat and privileged to have been able to meet them and did bring up the other Italian prog bands during our conversations. Not surprisingly, they felt Area was the most talented band from Italy but they were too political in their views and in their music.
I’ve never heard of these guys until today. I’m guessing this was recorded 45 to 50 years ago. But they remind me a bit of Yes. But I was thinking of Jethro Tull during the flute solo.
I believe that due to the abundance of bands from the 60s and 70s, most of them did not reach the general American and English public, but for people from other countries, like Brazil in my case, we found out through magazines, radio programs and through the albums. Did bands like Gentle Giant, my favorite among prog rock bands, or groups of other styles like Streetwalkers, Mothers Finest, Rory Gallagher, Little Feat... go unnoticed by most people?
@@didcap2022 Thank you for your explanation, I looked it up & can see the resemblance with “Neopolitan Puppetry”. I’m from the 🇺🇸 & had no idea, so interesting. Can’t wait to visit 🇮🇹 Italy in retirement.
PFM were the only Italian band who made it on the show and to the USA during the 1970s. Banco and Le Orme made it to the UK, but not the USA. Area just played in Europe. R.I.P. the great Demetrio Stratos.
I have their album Chocolate Kings. Wonderful. Not that PFM were derivative, they weren't, but their earlier stuff reminded me very much of King Crimson. This is kind of like Focus. But PFM were always quintessentially Italian, quintessentially European baroque Rock.
Yeah I am 73 years young and thought I heard or seen all the bands from the 70's but for some reason never saw this great band WOW very nice and I saved this performance...
LOL. I had to view all the comments here to see if anyone had noticed just how special it was seeing her face. She looks so blissed out when you compare some of the others in the front row. I was actually surprised that the clip didnt end with her face and her reaction. If that girl is still alive, it will be a moment she will cherish forever
Em nada me lembra o Focus.
Let me be the voice of reason here. This band lost the "plot'" of rock music. There is no "song" in their song. THIS group, their clothing . . . Punk was born because of this "stuff." As far as incorporating the flute, I think Canned Heat's "Up the Country" is one the few rock songs that got it right.
A prog classic from one of the best prog bands of the world. Thanks for sharing!

Weren't they signed to Manticore Records (ELP's label) ?

Every decent prog fan knows (and maybe love) PFM! You can find their album "Storia per un minuto" among all "best prog album ever" ranks.

Absolutely brilliant, all the way back to my teenage years, discovering new music. Still have the vinyl of Cook, their live album from 1974.

Prog keys guys always look like they're desperately trying to stop a nuclear meltdown.

Magnifico! I'm ready for tonight!🎉😄 Great band! 💜
Tight! These guys could play! Their first three albums are my absolute favorite.
I loved PFM back in college in the seventies. Thanks for sharing!
Wow I never knew pfm was on midnight special
I owned the album this song came from back in the Seventies. Never thought I would see them playing live

Huge PFM fan! I never knew they performed on Midnight Special until recently.
Wow King Gizzard have been going longer than I thought
I seen this group live at The Long Beach arena in 1974. they opened for Dave Mason.
IMHO one of the most overlooked bands....ever! this was the best lineup
Saw them live 3 or 4 times. Always magnificent and enjoyable and very talented

It's a very famous prog band of the "golden era" (69-74) 😉
Devi sentire "impressioni di settembre" della pfm. Ciao
Fifty years ago I was loving PFM, still sounding great.
63 years old and never heard of em. not bad
Listening to PFM is always a celebration!
Omg these guys were so good back in the day! Their live album rocks!
Thanks . 👏🏻👏🏻
I used to hear Premiata Forneria Marconi on Triad Radio 106 FM broadcasting from Chicago.

I don't remember this band - had to google them. They sure sound good! ❤️👍🎶🎶

Ahh the Italian version of Yes.
With a little Jethro Tull thrown in.
The Anderson, Squire, Howe, Kaye, Burford version. I can see it.
Honestly, I don't see any of that, especially because PFM used a lot of jazz rock elements and Yes and J. Tull didn't.
No way, completely different sound and style. You have good ear eh....
All I hear is PFM ;)
ummm AKA, The Empty Room Song - The Matt Berry Project
Esplosivi. La voce del tastierista era niente male.
Like Focus kinda.. Dixie dregs also
Tarantella rock.

prog rock is not synonimous of canonical , it is inside the word progressive
This guys are having a lot of fun and so are their listeners. Do you have a problem with people enjoying themselves?
