My #1 necessity for my mini dachshund is a litter pan!
I decided to litter train my mini longhair dachshund when I realized he hated cold / wet weather and kept having accidents in the house as a puppy.. It made potty training him much easier! it was a breeze to train him to use a cat litter box. Then I just adjusted the size of his litter box up to accommodate his length until he hit his adult weight / size. I also dual trained him to go outside after he mastered the litter box as weather permitted... this way I have no issues with accidents when we're away from home or traveling.
Now that he is fully grown he prefers to use his litter box first thing in the morning so that he can quickly relieve himself and go then straight back to bed without waking himself up entirely, when the weather is cold or wet and also for those late night emergencies after he's had a few too many cat food treats that he snuck behind mom's back throughout the day and ends up having to relieve himself without waking me up! He loves to go outside at least once a day if weather permits to mark his territory and check his "pee-mail" for any "messages" left by the neighborhood dogs. 😁
The side benefit to litter training my dachshund is that he continues to bury his poop even when he poops outside! NO POOP TO CLEAN IN THE YARD! I have a very high sand content soil where I live... not sure it would be the same for people with grass or other soil types.
As someone who's dream to have a dachshund is very possible soon I am learning lots about them and I can't wait to join the team of dachshund lovers.

LENNY & SIX DACHSHUNDS We are due to have him on Halloween I’m counting down the days. The breeder is currently weening the puppies onto a raw food diet which luckily I wanted to do what brands can you recommend and do I need to substitute with added vitamins, oils ect? TIA! X

Hey fellow experience dachshund owner. Harnesses are better than collars for walking because a collar puts pressure on the neck and back. I know it may seem that a harness does that but actually it even the weight around better! And when they pull it is really bad for them if they are wearing a collar.
Hey May! I’m sorry to tell you that, that isn’t true. The breed council in the UK do a research paper every year where one of the variables is collar vs harness on chances of IVDD and collars came up slightly less chance of IVDD but not a high enough variable to say for sure. So it actually makes no difference and always best to reach your dogs not to pull x
@@lennysixdachshunds1069 thanks for letting me know! Oh I was recommend by the surgeon to always walk my previous girl on a harness but that may be because she had already had a slipped disk. My current two boys wear both. I think it’s fine as long as they don’t pull. Both of mine lose lead walk but wear harnessed when on a country walk. Out of curiosity have you had yours ivdd tested. I’ve been considering having mine tested. X

I haven’t had mine screened just purely because I don’t intend to breed them so I don’t feel it’s necessary. Also those screened with low score doesn’t mean IVDD is inevitable for them so it wouldn’t change how I manage them :) hope that helps in your decision! Thanks for commenting xx

We are to become first-time Dachshund parents in 4 weeks time (Hannah's Ellie & Boyce's baby girl) & although I've been buying stuff for about 3 months I'd be very grateful for anything that would come my way!! I've just bought a collar from Dach of Tonic on ETSY, a beautiful cork one, which will be lovely & light & comfortable for our miniature girl. I'd be very interested in another video on essential items... Dachshund shopping has to be one of the best ways to spend time, doesn't it? Thanks for all the interesting links, although, I have to say I'm *still* finding dishes (that have Dachshunds on, naturally) rather difficult to find now... after years of seeing them!! 🙄 Am definitely getting one of those super coats for her one way or another though - they look so cosy!!
