You touched a nerve and a pet peeve of mine - people always say to me, "Oh...if I had your equipment, I would get great shots." And the blunt answer to that is, "No you wouldn't because It's not about the equipment - it's about knowing photography basics and how to properly use the equipment you have." Good equipment can help, but if you don't know how to use it - the most expensive gear in the world wouldn't help you get good/great photos. Loved your captures and good to dig out those 'old' lenses and use them again. Wishing you a great weekend Keith.
Thanks Becca! Definitely! While I do agree gear matters to a certain extent, like for more technical aspects like astro and your wildlife images, they can’t save a poorly composed photo. People need to nail the basics first and enjoy the challenge of finding the compositions 😁
Great video Keith, I love the idea of photography but the cost is what has stopped me so far, its good to know some of the more affordable lenses can be decent as well 😁
Thanks Matt! 😁 can definitely try out smaller sized sensor cameras (like apsc ones) and their lens selections are even cheaper. A lot more affordable if you just wanna get into taking photos.
Good subject, great photos. Love that light on the city at 4:47. Funnily enough I’m planning a similar video. A follow up to Tenerife where I used two kit lenses and a cheap wide angle from China. The point I want to make is the images are good enough for Social Media including TH-cam. Yes I did have an issue with the small lens but I was able to work around that. The images you took looked stunning on my TV (LG OLED). I think we would be hard pressed to tell the difference between a kit and a prime lens. The issue we all have these days is pixel peeping and trying to get that window on a building 10km away nice and crisp. Oh and just so you know, I will not be calling my kit lenses Keith lenses. You put yourself down too much 😂. All the best mate. Happy Easter.
Yes, if you zoom in the images comparing with the better ones, the difference could be massive in detail and quality. But on its own, could have decent results. 😁 looking forward to seeing your video that would be interesting definitely! Glad you enjoyed buddy ☺️ happy easter!
Hi Keith! You got some great photos of the city scape! Seeing the light reflecting off the tall tower was amazing! Since I’m a beginner I just have the kit lenses- good to see what you can do with one! Someday I’ll work my way up! 😄🤪👍👍
Keith lenses. LOL I'm glad you covered kit lenses in this video because most photographers start out with them so it's good to know how to get the rest results with them in your bag. It's crazy how expensive lenses can get! I love how those cityscapes. Wow!
I really enjoyed using my Keith lenses when I started out! Great and light for generic daily use. Then just figuring out what worked well in my compositions (at the time lol) the time I figured I should upgrade was only when I wanted something wider for landscapes and I remember I was just using my kit lens to take the blood moon of 2018 😂 yup, horrible results hahahaha
I was using a kit lens this week too for some testing:) nice job mate! Lovely shot at the end, great framing with the foliage in the foreground framing up the image!
Thanks Peter! 😁 haha after having spoiled with our new better lenses, it feels nostalgic using this old one 🤣 are u gonna be using your kit lens for macro?!
Good video. Have always found the sony 28-70mm to be a very capable lens in a lot of situations. Great for travel and street due to its relative compact nature (so not obtrusive to others) and lightweight build. Used a tamron 28-75 f 2.8 for a while, which I also found to be an beautifully performing lens, with the constant 2.8 allowing for good subject separation (especially at the long end), but that was a lens where I was always very aware of the extra weight and size, either when in the bag or when taking shots, so ended up using it less and less. I am currently preparing to travel away again for long term travel and once again that little sony kit lens will get taken with me (along with a few other primes for extra reach or better low light performance). It may not be the perfect lens for some, but it is one that I have been able to get a lot from over the last 10 years or so. 👌
Thanks James! I do think so, it’s definitely good enough for a daily lens. Not the sharpest but it can get the job done. I did this video as I wanted to make a decision on buying the 24-70 GM II as I’ve been having that itch to get a standard zoom. f/2.8 was becoming more important to me as I do more video and some astro. Thanks for watching!
haha Keith Lens 🤣 it would be cool to do a comparison of the sony and nikon kit lens, because the nikon is just 50$ and not 400 😄 fun video and i love the foto's around 3:18 amazing licht on the buildings. I'm still jealous of your funny parts 😂
I think the better comparison would be if I used my a6400 + kit lens (18-55mm on crop sensor) so it would be comparable to your D7200 😂 i think that kit lens is also around $50 😁 oh trust me, the jokes on this one was hard to come up with and i had to think on it for a while + in post 😂
Kit lenses can't fly? Whaha try throwing it of that hill you were on I promiss you it will fly for a short while 😅 good video in do agree with you for landscapes the aperture doesn't realy matter. But somehow I did spent a lot of money changing all my kid lenses into the expansive pro lenses... you should have made this video earlier I guess 😅 grt guido
Hahaha gonna be a one time use lens in flight mode 🤣 there’s nothing more exciting to a photographer than getting new lenses though, I think I upgraded my gear a lot sooner 😂
Dismall lens. Hard and flat. terrible rendering. terrible aperture. No wonder you can buy it for a 100 bucks. It`s not worth anymore. Using it is a waste of time.

Well, it certainly will help.
And avoiding this lens will certainly make it better.
I like to LOOK at my foto`s, with this lens i wouldn`t.
yep !!! ive heard it for years, heres the comeback for that statement-
If i handed you a guitar , are you now a guitarist ?
Love the photos you took with the kit lens! Thanks for making this video
Much appreciated! Glad you liked the photos

Glad that joke did well 😂 thanks so much for the usual support Maike! 🤗
Great points, thanks. I haven’t used my kit lens in a while.
😂 don’t think I’m gonna be taking it out any time soon 🤣
