The same cats balance and rotate their car tires twice a year with an average of 12 thousand miles but always come in wondering why their steer tires are wearing after 60 thousand miles of zero maintenance. Not to mention the curb stripes all the way around the outside of the sidewall like a whitewall!! These new guys also almost refuse to grease their fifth wheel wondering why they’re hearing God awful racket when they turn!! Steering wheel holders is all a lot of them are. I tell them all, The Rubber Duck is retired and The Snowman is dead!! Real drivers are few and far between these days!!

The actual cause of the problem is that on 55 degree wheel cut, the steering arm in the right knuckle and tie rod are in a straight line at full lock. The tie rod can't control the knuckle when they are in a straight line. The fix is to adjust the steering lock to the right so that the tie rod can't be in a straight line with the arm on the knuckle.

The wobble he demonstrated at high speeds the wobbling isnt really there but what happens is that because there is that couple of degrees of play the weight on the front end will cause the tire to point in on the bottom and out at the top and this gives you the outer tire wear only because that slant is enough to put the majority of the weight on the outside of the tire only. At slower speeds the wobble may still not be really felt but the wear pattern you get at slow speeds is both the outer tire wear and a wave wear pattern because at slow speeds the wobble can happen unlike at high speeds it will be locked at the slant due to circular forces and other fun science stuff lol
Freightliners do this as well. Apparently the stops aren’t out far enough, so the right side wheel does that oscillation once the angle with the tie rod gets too extreme.
My dad's truck does this it's a dodge 3500 saves him yet another trip for alignment was stumped on why the right steer ate tires like that this weekend gona try and see if there's a stop we can adjust or just see if he'll ease up in turning so far
I wonder the big truck shop I worked at that used master cylinder hones to ream out. Kingpins remembers me teaching this trick to find loose suspension components. straight might not be it. You got to check it at all degrees of turning radius. If I don't find play at the center I turn it to full lock and check for play again and then go full lock the other way and check for play and if I still find nothing I go in between and keep checking

This is a great video!!! You need to do more like this ‘cause a lot of big trucks (and trailers) have errant tire wear that alignment shops can’t seem to pinpoint. Or, they tell you it’s fixed so you put new tires on and the problem comes right back!!!

I think the ford f450s and up have a similar problem. I remember seeing that one side of the tire was worn down only on the front right when ever I had to service them.
Why would you not suspect the rear tandem trust angle? I mean how much speed can you achieve and for what amount of time while the steering is cut at 55° or even 45° ? I don't think so Tim.
I have know idea why I've been getting recomendations for car mechanics and welding. But I feel like I could learn something in the event I ever buy some sort of motorized vehicle that I might need to weld. Keep up the great work guys! Not legal per d.o.t. you cannot dismount and remount a steer tire as d.o.t considers it used. If you can find a shop that will do it, you do you. But good luck with that...

It is a good idea to rotate as soon as you can feel the outter edge startung to wear but I've also had the tire continue to wear in the same spot after rotation so i end up throwing right side tire away about 2 or 3 times before the left side gets shot

I've never had any issues getting tire shops to dismount, flip, mount and balance my steers. I do it every 40k-50k miles, along with almost every owner/op I know. That would be really surprising to me if they made that a rule, while simultaneously having no restriction on how old a tire can be
Question? So i been watching your channel for quite some time and love the content, but does this also apply to some vehicles? I work at a kost and i have vehicles come in with similar issues, i check balljoints and tie rods and figure its an alignment issue, yes sometimes it is and the camber will be out but sometimes its not, i cant remember if said vehicles had drag links like jeeps or if they were regular road vehicles but should this be something i regularly check on say like big dodge and ford trucks that dont have aftermarket drag links?
Never turn wheels when dead stopped, always a little creep. ,and don't take sharp turn so fast. This will slow the wearing, but not stop it,when it gets bad enough swap sides on steers. Get about 150 thousand with centramatics.
I have had a lot of issues with steer tire wear on both the inside of the left tire, and outside of the right tire. I don't see this as much as my current center, but the previous one it happened all the time. I always attributed this to right lane running, as they are governed at 68 and have a hard time hitting this pulling doubles or triples, but the traffic patterns at both centers explain that even better.

The geometry of the steering linkages is variable depending on the desired performance characteristics and chassis set-up hence they move differently. It's not just my mind playing tricks.

As a European truck driver, I would never have tyres like that on my truck.... I prefer a proper tread pattern, not one like that, it looks like one you'd have on a trailer.
“Proper” for a semi is straight and grooved, different vehicle requires different equipment. plenty of reasons for it but they get higher mileage per tire and less rolling resistance it’s just smart

add a Idler arm to the passenger side to or a steering stabilizer to take out the slop. Seems like he said the other side has the pitman arm going to the gearbox which is why it doesn't happen on that side (Driver Side)
Yay for modern garbage wearing out parts fast because an engineer was too lazy or under paid to put in support on the right side of the truck.... I would be making Volvo buy me new tires every 6 months.

Wheel align cars myself an some truck Specs are… a tad too high on toe in for good cornering wear, Maybe try trim the toe down a lil an keep the pressure up, too many will ignore the low pressure as a large problem Cars you could say rotate more as well but
mechanic at coca cola found similar wear on driver's side of a route truck, it was aggravated by the truck making far more left turns into and out of his stops on the route, he replaced the parts and he and another driver swapped trucks every other week with one that made a lot of right turns, great for them but as a loader, WE had to keep it straight & be certain load sheets for the 2 trucks was correct every day.🤣 👍🇺🇸😎
New tractors don’t come with an aligned front ends. They want you to run them for a bit before they align them. We run new trucks and after about 10k miles or so they go and get alighted.
The issue can be solved by adjusting the turn stop adjuster on the hub and a big truck. You should only be able to turn your steering wheel 2 1/2 times from a center to center anymore it causes that issue great for turning radius not good for longevity

There are stops built into the spindles on both the left and right sides from factory. Quite an easy adjustment to make.

The 55° tire thing has to do with them never going under 55 mph. The truck that drives slow starts to build up Cheez-Its
The way to get even wear dismount the tire flip it over and remount it every 20k miles or less.

Back in the day we used to call that tire scrub from adjusting your wheel stops to far in to get better turning radius 😊

Wheel align cars myself an some truck Specs are… a tad too high on toe in for good cornering wear,
Maybe try trim the toe down a lil an keep the pressure up, too many will ignore the low pressure as a large problem

mechanic at coca cola found similar wear on driver's side of a route truck, it was aggravated by the truck making far more left turns into and out of his stops on the route, he replaced the parts and he and another driver swapped trucks every other week with one that made a lot of right turns, great for them but as a loader, WE had to keep it straight & be certain load sheets for the 2 trucks was correct every day.🤣

New tractors don’t come with an aligned front ends. They want you to run them for a bit before they align them. We run new trucks and after about 10k miles or so they go and get alighted.
It’s a 2024 and he already has 115000 miles on it. That is a working truck.

The issue can be solved by adjusting the turn stop adjuster on the hub and a big truck. You should only be able to turn your steering wheel 2 1/2 times from a center to center anymore it causes that issue great for turning radius not good for longevity
And still dodnt tell you the issue lol thanks for the heads up lol
Im sure that little bit of play and wobble from factory wont lead everything else to prematurely wear down
Any thoughts on what could cause an intermittent wobble/shake on the highway and slight cupping on the edge of the steers? 2020 freightliner.
